Design of A Looped Network Using Watercad/Watergems Individual Assignment For Jigjiga Students

This document provides information to design the expansion of an existing looped water pipe network through the addition of 6 new pipes. It includes details of the 19 pipe network layout, elevations and demands of 13 junction nodes, diameters and properties of existing pipes, and available pipe sizes and costs. The tasks are to analyze the pre-expansion network, use an optimization tool to determine optimal sizes for the 6 new pipes minimizing cost while meeting pressure and velocity criteria, and analyze the post-expansion network to check the impact on existing system pressures.

Water Transport and Distribution (WSSE 6301)

Design of a looped network using WaterCAD/WaterGEMS

Individual Assignment for Jigjiga Students

The figure below shows a looped pipe network with two storage tanks, 13 junction nodes and 19 pipes. As shown
in the figure, 13 of the pipes are existing ones while the remaining 6 are new pipes which are to be installed to
serve the newly expanding area in the eastern part (right side) of the network. Table 1 (Network nodes data)
shows elevations and peak hour demands of the junction nodes while Table 2 (Network pipes data) indicates the
diameter of existing pipes and length and Hazen-Williams coefficient (C value) of all pipes. Table 3 (Discrete
sizes data) lists the sizes (internal diameter) and unit costs of the pipes that are available on the market.

This problem is a good example of the situation in Ethiopia where we need to expand existing water
distribution networks in urban areas to serve newly developed neighborhoods. Perform the following
analysis and design tasks using WaterCAD/WaterGEMS.
1. Perform hydraulic analysis of the network before the expansion. Your result should clearly show
the pipe andj'imction reports before the new pipes and junctions are included.
2. Use Darwin Designer and determine the most appropriate sizes the 6 new pipes with the objective
of minimizing pipe cost while maintaining a minimum and maximum pressure head of 15m and
70m, respectively at Junctions 10 to 13 and minimum and maximum velocity of
0.4m/s and 2.5m/s, respectively in Pipes 14 to 19. Your result should clearly indicate the Options
or GA parameters you have used to get your best result, the minimum pipe cost, diameters of the
new pipes and simulated results in terms of Pressure and Flow constraints.
3. Perform hydraulic analysis of the system after the expansion and study the impact of the new
expansion on the pressure head on the existing system. Your result should clearly show the pipe
and junction reports after the new pipes (with their optimal sizes) and junctions are included. You
also need a brief narrative report comparing the pressure head available in the existing system
before and after the expansion. If the pressure in the existing system drops below 15m after the
expansion work, state any solution to solve the problem.
