Honorata “Atang” Dela Rama was formally honored as the Queen of

Kundiman in 1979, then already 74 years old singing the same song (“Nabasag
na Banga”) that she sang as a 15-year old girl in the sarsuela Dalagang Bukid.
Atang became the very first actress in the very first locally produced Filipino
film when she essayed the same role in the sarsuela’s film version. As early as
age seven, Atang was already being cast in Spanish zarzuelas such as Mascota,
Sueño de un Vals, and Marina. She counts the role though of an orphan in
Pangarap ni Rosa as her most rewarding and satisfying role that she played with
realism, the stage sparkling with silver coins tossed by a teary-eyed audience.
Atang firmly believes that the sarswela and the kundiman expresses best the
Filipino soul, and even performed kundiman and other Filipino songs for the
Aetas or Negritos of Zambales and the Sierra Madre, the Bagobos of Davao and
other Lumad of Mindanao. (January 11, 1902 – July 11, 1991)

 Dalagang Bukid

- It is a 1919 Filipino silent film directed by José Nepomuceno.

It is the first Filipino feature film to be locally produced in the
Philippines. Like all of Nepomuceno's works, Dalagang Bukid
is now a lost film. It is a story about a young flower vendor
named Angelita (Atang de la Rama), who is forced by her
parents to marry a wealthy old man, Don Silvestre, despite her
love for Cipriano, a law student.
- Nepomuceno was also said to be moonlighting as a subtitler in
English and Spanish for French and Italian films. When he had
enough capital, he opened Malayan Movies. Its first film,
Dalagang Bukid in 1919, made him a household name. Ever
the multitasker, Nepomuceno also accepted the offer of the
government to make short documentaries about the different
industries of the country. From 1921 to 1923, he used 14 reels of
film to shoot the production of tobacco, hemp, coconut, hat and
button-making. This is also the reason why Malaya Movies did not
produce a lot of films this time despite the success of Dalagang
Bukid. Unfortunately, since the nitrate films were made up of highly
flammable materials, there were a couple of times that the studio of
Malayan Movies burned down. The first time was in 1921 and the
second in 1923. The battle of Manila did not spare whatever
remained, including the newsreels, equipment, and prints of early
films. Until recently, it was widely believed that none of
Nepomuceno’s work survived the destruction of the city. Sadly, this
includes Dalagang Bukid, the culturally significant piece of art that
is recognized as the first true Filipino film.
 Oriental Blood
José Corazón de Jesús (November 22, 1896 – May 26,
1932), also known by his pen name Huseng Batute, was a
Filipino poet who used Tagalog poetry to express the
Filipinos' desire for independence during the American
occupation of the Philippines, a period that lasted from
1901 to 1946. He is best known for being the lyricist of the
Filipino song Bayan Ko. De Jesús, who was already
famous around the Philippines as Huseng Batute, was
asked in 1930 to act in the movie Oriental Blood, which
starred Atang dela Rama and Carmen Rosales, the most
famous actresses of the day, and his own son, José
Corazón de Jesús, Jr., who would later gain some fame as a
silent movie actor. De Jesús contracted an ulcer during the
filming of Oriental Blood and died of complications on May 26, 1932.

Severino Montano is considered as one of the Titans of Philippine

Theater. He was a playwright, director, actor and theater organizer
with an output of one novel, 150 poems and 50 plays in his 65-year
lifetime. Through the foundation of the Arena Theater, Montano
institutionalized “legitimate theater” in the Philippines. He also have
lifetime achievement award as part of National Artist of the
Philippines. (3 January 1915 in Laoag, Ilocos Norte – 12 December
1980)

 The Love of Leonor Rivera

It was a first try at stage acting for the highly accomplished lady:
Lawyer (admitted to the American bar), harpist, all-around
sportswoman, fashion pacesetter and businesswoman. Historical
accounts said that in the lining of Leonor Rivera’s Maria Clara the
love letters of Jose Rizal were hidden. The Sunday Times Magazine headlined Chito’s stage
debut, ‘1953 top socialite plays Rizal’s Leonor.’
