Design 3 Syllabus 2020-2021

This document outlines the syllabus for an Architectural Design course. The course introduces students to the full design process and focuses on a public civic building project. Over 12 weeks, students will research architectural styles, analyze case studies, and develop their design for the civic building through site analysis, programming, concept development, schematic designs, and final submission. The civic building project should incorporate functions like classrooms, meeting spaces, a library, exhibitions, and outdoor areas to serve community needs based on the architectural theme studied. Regular submissions are required and attendance in at least 85% of classes is compulsory.

(AE- 321) Course Syllabus Hijjawi Faculty for Engineering Technology

Department of Architectural Engineering
Sun. &Tue. (11:00-15:00) Autumn semester/2020-2021

Course Description:

In this course students are introduced to the full process of designing architectural projects and
the fulfilment of human needs and functional programming. During this course, and due to the pandemic
situation and restrictions of physical movements and meetings, the students are supposed to design one
public project with moderate complexity in functions and requirements. This project includes different
functions within one building or a complex of buildings. This course focuses on discovering suitable
architectural solutions through the sequenced analysis and conclusions solving different challenges in
relation to existing regulations, and context’s conditions. Students study circulation types, spatial
relationships while dealing with different considerations; environmental, social, psychological,
behavioural, and economic aspects which affect architectural design.

During this course, the students are also supposed to enrich their architectural general knowledge
and culture about well-known school of architecture and their followed architects. Renowned architects
like Mies Van Der Rohe, Louis Khan, Daniel Libeskind, Jean Prouve, Walter Gropius, Tadao Ando,
Frank Llyod Wright, and many others have contributed to the profession of science and architecture with
their ways of designing, thinking, and dealing with context. Each architect follows certain themes or
school of architectural thinking and practices. At the beginning of the course, the students would search,
study and research the main ideas of chosen schools, their following architects, and projects. This initial
study will then be implemented and adopted by each student on the required project of public civic centre.

Learning Outcomes:

The student should be able to:

1. Enrich students' knowledge about different schools and themes of architectural design.
2. Develop students' abilities of dealing with complex architectural functions, imposed to challenges
that might exist in real context.
3. Develop students’ abilities of exploring, analyzing, and understanding architectural aspects of
international and local case studies relevant to the chosen theme of the project.
4. Develop students’ graphic skills in demonstrating and representing their work using aiding
computer programs.
5. Develop students’ base knowledge in architectural design and self-excel with their own
architectural character and identity.

Attendance

It is compulsory for students to attend at least 85% of the whole time allocated to the course. More than
two (3) unjustified absences from the lab will make you ineligible to continue the course or submit its
assignments. Students who miss studios will have no means to make up a missed session. Our policy on
attendance is very strict. If you miss a handout or assignment, it is your responsibility to get the assignment
from your fellow students and unexcused absences will affect your grade and your design progress.

First Project
Civic building/ civic centre1
A civic building or centre is a group of spaces (could be separated, or within one building) that
provides essential services and activities to the city. A civic centre can include different kind of major
function, or functional theme that are accessed by different categories of the public community of the city.
For instance, the civic building can include representative of governmental functions/ offices, public
meeting spaces, library, free spaces for professional traineeship, and possibly spaces honouring memorial
person, events like museums and exhibitions. The design of civic centre is usually influenced by the
urgent needs of the surrounding community, reflecting their culture and city identity. Thus, the
architectural design of the civic centre varies across different cities in terms of size, scope, and overall
design theme.
Functions within civic centre/building can vary in accordance with their functional/occupational
uses and the time of use, for instance, short-term uses like multi-purpose halls, or long-term uses like
libraries and outdoor areas. It is important within the design of civic centre to experience, get familiar
with the need of the surrounding community, their behaviours in the related spaces of the city. State, and
local regulations must be also adhered to within the design process. For this specific course, the
examined/ studies theme of the chosen school of architectural design will play its role within the design
process of the civic building.
Accordingly, a number of primary design tactics must be achieved within the design of civic
centre, serving the need and the identity of community: design for functionality, effective layout
balancing between indoor and outdoor, fulfilling community needs, and reflect city identity and
users’ characteristics.
