Lesson Outcomes / Purpose
Essential Understandings Curricular Outcomes/Achievement Indicators
The students will know: The student will be able to:
We all need to know how to work as a team. S.1.7.B.2 Apply functional use of selected and/or
activity-specific movement skills with a defensive
and/or an offensive component (e.g., faking out an
opponent, guarding, running for positioning to catch
a ball, batting...) in a variety of games/ sports,
including territory/invasion-type activities (e.g.,
Essential Questions basketball...) and striking/fielding-type activities
(e.g., cricket, softball...).
How can we help our teammates out so they can be S.1.6.B.3 Demonstrate the ability to work
successful? cooperatively/collaboratively in planning, organizing,
and/or officiating physical activities.
Cross-Curricular/Real World Connections
- Coordinate strategies to achieve common
goals with others.
- Use the honor system in everyday life (ex-
playing sports with no referee).
Materials (ICT considered) Differentiation Strategies
handouts, ICT equipment, etc. Consider cultural diversity, variations, and groupings
Include exemplars / samples
Variations of dodgeball:
- Dodgeballs or gator balls (one for each - Medic: the Dr has a scooter and saves people
student, or nearly that many) sitting by placing them on the scooter and
- Speaker pushing them to the back on the gym, instead of
- Phone for music a ‘secret doctor.’
- Could use a mat to serve as a protective shield.
- Consider having three five minute rounds
instead of a 15 minute game.
- Try to keep the teams equal in skill level.

Assessment Evidence
Assessment FOR learning Assessment AS learning Assessment OF learning
• Assessment for students • After the game, students • Students can be assessed
working cooperatively and will self assess to determine on their ability to use
using appropriate movements how well they worked strategy to achieve success
needed to achieve the collaboratively with their in the game.
common goal. teammates and how much
effort they put forth.
Learning Plan
Considerations for the Learning Plan: What strategies / activities will I use? How will I
encourage active thinking? What questions will I pose to foster student critical thinking? Time
Activate Instant activity = warm up. Have a list of 8-10 exercises listed on the whiteboard 8 mins
ready for when the students enter the gym (ex. 3 Laps, 20 jumping jacks, 25 arm
circles, 15 mountain climbers, 25 squats,10 push-ups, 10 lunges, 1 minute wall sit).
With combined efforts and actions of a group, especially when effective and
Hook efficient, teams can more easily achieve a common purpose or goal. 2mins
Discuss with students the skills in the game:
• Develop cooperation skills and strategic thinking. Teamwork.
• Throwing
• Catching
• Evasion
Have them think about strategies they could use as a team to win the game (ex-
giving balls to teammates when someone is sitting, multiple people touch the
wounded player to disguise the secret medic, protect the secret medic).
Acquire How to play. Knowledge.
- Divide the group into 2 teams. 2 mins
- Each team starts on opposite ends of the court with an attack line in the
middle.
- Teams have 30 seconds to huddle and decide who is the secret doctor. Have
them tell you who they have chosen.
- Have students line up against the wall on their side of the gym and have the
balls on the attack line.
- When you say go, the students can run to the invasion line to grab a ball (each
student can only grab one ball), however, they must go back and touch their
wall before throwing the ball at the opposing team.
- When the teams start throwing the balls, there are 3 ways to get ‘wounded’:
1. A player gets hit by a ball.
2. If a ball is dropped while trying to catch it.
3. If the ball is thrown and caught by someone on the opposing team.
- A wounded player must sit, but can still catch and throw balls to wound
players on the opposing team.
- If the doctor taps the wounded player on the shoulder, they are healed and
can resume play.
- If the doctor gets out, they cannot be healed.
- The game is over when the spy medic is wounded.
Apply
Carryout the game. 15 mins
Have students put equipment away. 1 min
Closure Why are we doing this? Debriefing
Have the students gather at home base and discuss collaboration. “Teams can 2mins
collaborate in a better way if they are involved in team building activities. Team
building activities will bring positive impact on classroom and peer relationships as
it will improve communication, motivation, increase productivity, and help
students to get to know each other better.”
