Stat122 Activity 1

The document provides instructions for a statistics activity involving data analysis and visualization. It includes 10 multiple choice and short answer questions requiring the student to: 1) Correct a formula in an Excel sheet to calculate shipping costs, noting the original error. 2) Fill in index numbers for a VLOOKUP formula and copy it down a column, recording the number entered into one cell. 3) Create a pivot table summarizing sales data and report the count of unique IDs. 4) Update and modify the pivot table to show monthly sales sums and averages, recording the results. 5) Identify the customer segment with the highest shipping cost and number of orders shipped in a different quarter than ordered. 6

STAT122 TS11 Activity 1

Department of Mathematics March 5, 2022

College of Science and Engineering 2nd Semester, SY 2021–2022
Last Name First Name Signature Score

50
General Instructions: This activity is worth 50 points. Answer all items. Work ALONE. If you
have questions, address it to the teacher, not a classmate. You have until March 7, 2022 (3:00 PM)
to submit your answer sheet and the Excel file containing your “solutions”. Good luck!

For numbers 1-10, refer to the attached data set. Each item is worth 5 points. Final answers should
be written on the answer sheet which is to be submitted together with your edited Excel file.

1. The “Compiled Information” tab was created to pull in the data from the other
tabs using formulas. The formula in the “Shipping Cost” column was entered
incorrectly. Fix the formula in cell D3, then re-copy the correct formula down
to the remaining rows. Copy the corrected formula in the answer sheet and
explain what was the problem with the original formula?

2. On the “Compiled Information” tab, a VLOOKUP formula has been pre-entered

into cell E3. This formula was written correctly, and it uses references to the
numbers in cells E1 through G1 to determine the correct index number param-
eter. Fill in cells F1 and G1 with the correct index numbers, then copy the
formula in cell E3 down to all the rows in columns E, F, and G. What number
did you enter into cell G1?

3. Now that the data is updated, create a pivot table that contains all of the data
on the “Compiled Information” tab. Using the Pivot Table Fields side bar, drag
the “Unique ID” field to the VALUES area and summarize the information by
Count. What is the Count of Unique ID?

4. Update the pivot table to show “Order Date” grouped by month. Drag the
“Sales” field into the correct area to show the Sum of Sales for each of the
months listed. Which month had the lowest sales?

5. Continuing from the previous question, update the pivot table to show the
Average of Sales by month. Which month had the highest average? (Your
answer should be the name of the month.)
6. Which Customer Segment contained the single order with the highest shipping
cost? (2 points)

7. In all segments, how many orders were placed in one quarter of the year but
shipped in the next quarter (For example, an order in which Order Date = Qtr1
2009 and Ship Date = Qtr2 2009)?

8. Create a pie chart that shows the divides the total sales per customer segment
then paste the chart on your answer sheet.

9. Create a line chart that shows the average of “Sales” for each customer segment
by month, where each customer segment is represented by a line on the chart
then paste the chart on your answer sheet.

10. Line charts are useful for looking for trends in data and gaining quick insights.
Make a chart above showing the total Sales in 2009 by month in the Consumer
segment. Then, include a short inference or analysis based on the chart.
