Coated sheets

Overview of coating types

Coated aluminium sheets are most often used in the building, sign and insulation sectors. In general there are two
types of coated aluminium sheets: liquid painted and powder painted. Below is an overview of the two types and
their characteristics:

Definition Types Advantages Disadvantages

Liquid painting Polyester • Excellent resistance to abra • Bad chemical resistance
Polyurethane sion and knocks (Polyamide) (Polyrethane)
Liquid paint is applied
Polyamide • Resistant to chemical,
to the sheet with a
roller and is then heat mechanical and corrosive
PVDF
dried to harden the effects (PVDF)
paint. • Excellent elasticity (PVDF)
• Good chemical resistance
(Polyamide)
• Good coating elasticity
• Good resistance to UV
(Polyamide)
• PVDF has 24+ years life
expectancy

Powder painting Thermoplastic • High material exploitation • Bad resistance to weather

during production – no evap (Polyethylene, epoxy)
The sheet is coated oration • Bad resistance to UV
Polyethylene
with a thermoset layer • Easy to apply thicker layer (Polyester)
of powder. The paint is Polypropylene
then hardened by heat- Vinyl • Excellent resistance to abra • Bad resistance to weather
treating the sheet. sion and knocks (Polyamide) (Polyester)
Polyamide
• Resistant to chemical effects • Wastage during production
Polyester
(Polyethylene, vinyl) in the form of evaporation if
• Good adherence (polyester) there is over-spraying

• Good resistance to weather

Thermosetting
(polyester, vinyl)
• High corrosion stability
Epoxy
• Good coating elasticity
Polyester
• Good formability
Epoxy-polyester
(mix) • Good mechanical features
(Epoxy)
• Easy to apply finer thickeness
• Sheets can be scored without
the paint cracking
• Polyester has 16 years life
expectancy

NB: When ordering coated sheets it is a good idea to order the entire load in one go to avoid slight
differences in colour as a result of further orders being filled from different batches.

Alloys and maintenance

When using coated sheets in construction, Alumeco A/S recommends using sheets made of aluminium alloy
EN AW-5754 as this has corrosion resistance properties. The use of other alloys invalidates the guarantee. The
sheet surface should be maintained by being cleaned at least once a year to uphold the guarantee for the mate
rial supplied.

Economy and quality:

High quality roller tubes - a necessity for economical production. Fine tolerances on outside and inside diameters,
uniform thickness and concentric running accuracy help to optimise the production process and reduce material
consumption.

Additional technical and economical benefits: Quality example: Roller tube in T.O.P.-quality.

(1) D = Diameter for round bars. Å = Open profile

(2) S = Cross section for square and hexagonal bars, plus thickness for flat profiles and bars. H = Hollow profile
(3) e = Wall thickness.
(4) F-Condition: The mechanical properties are only intended as a guide.
(5) The properties can only be reached by shock cooling.
10) When a profile’s cross section consists of different wall thicknesses with different mechanical properties,
the lowest specified value must be considered as the effective value for the whole profile.

(1) D = Diameter for round bars. Å = Open profile

(2) S = Cross section for square and hexagonal bars, plus thickness for flat profiles and bars. H = Hollow profile
(3) e = Wall thickness.
(5) The properties can only be reached by shock cooling.
(8) Bending quality.
(9) Referring to supplement A and supplement B for material in this condition.
(10)When a profile’s cross section consists of different wall thicknesses with different mechanical properties,
the lowest specified value must be considered as the effective value for the whole profile.
