for this purpose of trade since very early times.” (Davidson, 1994)
MICE tourism is a part of the business tourism industry. It encompasses four niche areas,
which are: Meeting, Incentive, Convention, Exhibition.
- Meeting: “An event where the primary activity of the participants is to attend
educational sessions, participate in discussions social functions, or attend other
organized events. There is no exhibit component”. (The APEX Glossary)
- Incentive travel: “A global management tool that uses an exceptional travel
experience to motivate and/or recognize participants for increased levels of
performance at work.” (Society of Incentive Travel Executives)
- Convention: Gathering of delegates, representatives, and members of a membership or
industry organization convened for a common purpose. Common features include
educational sessions, committee meetings, social functions, and meetings to conduct
the governance business of the organization. Conventions are typically recurring

- Exhibition: An event at which products, services, or promotional materials are
displayed to attendees visiting exhibits on the show floor. These events focus
primarily on business-to-business (B2B) relationships.
