Raffles Institution Mathematics JIP 2022 Year 5 - Trigonometry Quiz

The trigonometry quiz contained 8 multiple choice questions. Based on the students' performance, many had issues with questions 6 and 9 which involved the periodic properties of trigonometric functions. Question 1 asked students to calculate the number of minutes in an hour that the distance from a clock hand tip to a vertical line through the center is greater than or equal to 40cm. The answer was 40 minutes. Question 5 showed a graph of y=a-cos(x/b) and asked for the values of a and b, which were determined to be 2 and 6 respectively from analyzing the graph properties. The document provided worked solutions for each question to help students understand where they went wrong.

Trigonometry Quiz

Comments: The students who attempted the quiz scored around 70% on average. Quite a large
number of students did not answer Question 6 and 9 correctly. They are advised to revisit the periodic
properties of trigonometric functions (their periods, special angles, asymptotes etc) as well as the
concept of ASTC.

Question 1
A public building has a large clock set on an exterior wall. The distance from the centre of
the clock O, to the tip M, of the minute hand is 80 cm. The distance of M to the vertical line
through O is given by d cm.

For how long in each hour is d ≥ 40 ? __________ minutes

Answer: 40
Solution:

If d = 40 , d
1 π π
then sin θ = ⇒θ = . Hence, for 0 ≤ θ ≤ , d ≤ 40 .

Question 2
A line with gradient 3 is inclined at an angle of __________ degrees with the
positive x-axis.
Answer: 60
Solution:

Question 4
For any angle a, b, in radians,
a < b ⇒ sin a < sin b .
True or False?
Answer: False
Solution:
The statement a < b ⇒ f ( a ) < f (b) is only true for increasing functions.

Question 5

x
The figure shows part of the graph of y= a − cos . The values of
b
a = _______ and b = ________.

Answer: a = 2, b = 6
Solution: For y = cos θ ,
Since Period = 2π
−1 ≤ cos θ ≤ 1 From the graph, Period = 12π
⇒ − 1 ≤ − cos θ ≤ 1 , This means that there is scaling by a
⇒ − 1 + a ≤ a − cos θ ≤ 1 + a factor of 6 parallel to the x-axis.
x x
x x → ⇒x →
From the graph, 1 ≤ a − cos ≤ 3 b 6
b
Thus, b = 6 .
Thus
−1 + a =1
∴a = 2
Similarly,
1+ a = 3
a = 2.
