Assignment - Quadratic Word Problems and Quadratic Systems

This document provides an assignment on linear-quadratic systems and word problems. The assignment contains two questions - the first asks students to graph linear and quadratic equations to find solutions, and the second directs students to choose and fully solve two word problems from each of two groups. The assignment is due on a specified date and instructs students to show their work. It also includes a 4-level rubric to evaluate students' knowledge, application of course materials, communication, and strategic thinking.

ASSIGNMENT #1: LINEAR – QUADRATIC SYSTEMS AND WORD PROBLEMS

Name: _________________________ Due Date: __________

Instructions:
• Answer the following questions in the space provided.
• Make sure to communicate you answer properly.
• Put a box around your final answer or make a proper conclusion statement

1. Linear – Quadratic Systems:

The equation of the parabola graphed is 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 5
a) Two Solutions:
• Draw a line so that it crosses the parabola twice
Note: It can not be a horizontal line
• It will be easier to draw a line starting at the y-intercept and then
applying the slope. Write the equation of the line in the from
𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏.
• The equation of my line I drew is: ________________________

Solve your Linear Quadratic System.

algebraically. Round your answer to 1
decimal place where necessary.
b) No Solutions
• Draw a line so that it does not cross the parabola
Note: It can not be a horizontal line
• The equation of my line I drew is ______________________

Solve your Linear – Quadratic System Algebraically.

2. Word Problems
• Choose 2 word problem from Group A and 2 word problem from Group
B and provide a complete solution on a separate piece of paper.

Group A:
1. A parking lot is to be fenced in on three sides with the fourth side bounded
by a building. If 400 m of fencing are available, what is the maximum area
of the parking lot.

2. Studies have shown that 500 people attend a high school basketball game
when the admission price is $2.00. In the championship game admission
prices will increase. For every 20 cents increase 20 fewer people will
attend. What price will maximize receipts?

3. An enclosure is constructed with the shape shown and with a perimeter of

600 m. What are the values of x and y so that the area of the enclosure is a
maximum?

Group B:
1. A right-angled triangle has a perimeter of 120 cm. If the hypotenuse is 50
cm, find the lengths of the other two sides.

2. A square swimming pool with a side measuring 16 m is to be surrounded by a

uniform rubberized floor covering. If the area of the floor covering equals
the area of the pool, find the width of the rubberized covering.

3. The area of a triangle is 20 𝑐𝑚2 , and the height is 3 cm greater than its
base. Find the length of the base and the height of the triangle.
