II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

As you embark on a new high school journey, let us explore the world through Afro-Asian
Literature. We know that studying literature will enrich our lives. It will also help us understand
our people, culture and society.

As a Grade 8 student, you need to know words and expressions that reflect our local
culture to better appreciate Afro-Asian and other cultures. This learning activity sheet will
help you widen your knowledge about local culture by using words and expressions
commonly used in a particular locale or community.

Local Culture- is everything that we create and share as part of our lives in the place
we live

-recognizes that people’s daily knowledge comes from shared life experiences and
information transmitted to them by family and friends, neighbors and co-workers.

But before you can understand the local words and expressions, there are common
ways by which context reveals meaning. Using the types of context clues will help you
understand the meaning of these local words and expressions.

Context clues are hints found within a sentence paragraph or passage that a reader
can use to understand the meaning of a new or unfamiliar words.

TYPES OF CONTEXT CLUES

1. Definition Clue- gives the meaning of the unfamiliar word. Here the writer adds very specific
words to tell us an explanation of what the word or term is about. Signal words used are is,
are, is/ are called, is/ are known as, means, refers to.
Example: Graphology is the term for the study of writing or handwriting.
(Here the writer gives directly the meaning of the graphology as the study of writing or
handwriting)

2. Synonym or Restatement Clue- uses a word having the same or nearly the same meaning
of a difficult word in the sentence. Signal words include or, that is, in other words, to put in
another way. Mechanical devices used as signals are dash or parentheses.
Examples: Jasmine walks around the bazar or market to buy clothes and shoes.
(Bazar means market.)

It was an idyllic day- sunny warm and perfect for a walk.
(Idyllic means sunny.)

3. Antonym or Contrast Clue- uses a word having the opposite meaning of the unknown word.
Signal words include but however, although, instead, unlike, on the other hand.
Example: Cindy is hardworking but Cassy is indolent.
(Indolent means lazy.)

4. Examples Clue- provide examples of the unknown word. Signal words are like, such as, for
example, for instance, including, and specifically.
Example:
Reptiles have scales and lay eggs like snakes, lizards and crocodiles.
(Snakes, lizards and crocodiles are examples of reptiles.)

5. Cause and Effect Clue- explains the relationship of the cause and its effect. Signal words
like because, since, thus, therefore, consequently are used.
Example: Because the conflagration was aided by the wind, the houses were completely
burned to the ground.
(Conflagration means a large disastrous fire.)

6. Word Analysis or Structure- uses prefixes, roots, and suffixes of the difficult word to get its
meaning.
Example: The story is incredible.
Root word: The ‘cred’ means ‘to believe’
Prefix: ‘in’ which mean ‘not’
(Incredible means unbelievable)

the paragraph to better explain or illustrate the dish you want to introduce.
