A Cleaning Coin
Extravaganza!!
From ketchup to vinegar, we can test
what truly cleans those old coins deep
in our wallets…
An experiment by
Madison Russell
I have to ask…
-What makes coins get so dirty?
-What is the best way to clean
those coins?

My Hypothesis
Out of all of the liquids I will be
testing to see what cleans the coins
the best, I think that the coin
emerged into the ketchup will come
out cleanest. I think this because of
the ingredients of the ketchup. It
has vinegar and salt and also
tomatoes which are pretty acidic. I
think all those factors will assist in
cleaning the coins.

a kitchen towel or napkin.
4. Now, wipe the coins dry
5. Evaluate which coin(s) were the cleanest and place on data table

In Conclusion…
This was such an interesting experiment to complete.
Through the preparation, I was able to come up with my
hypothesis and even ask my family members around me what
they think would happen. While the general results I
concluded can be put up to opinion, I concluded that I was
correct in my hypothesis. After 10 minutes, the ketchup did
the best job of cleaning the coins. A big part of this is the
ingredients within ketchup and its acidicness. I was surprised
to see how well the apple juice did, and I also saw it
includes malic acid and ascorbic acid.
I am curious in the future to possibly experiment with other
liquids and even a mix of the ones I used here.
