Activity #12: Sustainable Development Goals
In the video entitled “BIC: Two minutes to understand sustainable development” by BIC Group (2015), they tackled the creation of Sustainable Development, which is the idea that humans should live and meet their needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It aims to eradicate the social and environmental problems happening today. In my perspective, the SDGs are extravagant due to how many goals are included where in fact, these are not foreign concepts to us. What the SDGs claim has already been working on to solve the world’s biggest issues. Resolving extreme poverty, vaccinations, environmental advocacies, and such all fall under the SDGs. The United Nations just created a platform for the world’s growing social and environmental problems that act as a “wake-up call” for all of us to take action among these issues. The SDGs may seem vague and unrealistic yet it is important for us because it sets a universal goal that is time-bound and suggests various ways, be it a huge contribution or small, that people can do in improving and achieving each goal for the betterment of our world. Another importance of SGDs is that it promotes a long-term approach in addressing global issues that encourages a joint action among countries. In the video entitled “How COVID-19 Will Affect the Sustainable Development Goals | Global Citizen Explains” uploaded by Global Citizen (2020), they stated how the novel coronavirus have threaten the expected attainment of SDGs by 2030, most notably on the progress towards good health and well-being (SDG 3), quality education (SDG 4), and gender equality (SDG 5). The current pandemic has no doubt took its major toll, evidently, on Goal 3. It has put healthcare systems on the line not just for the management and treatment of the virus but also in caring for non-COVID-19 illnesses. Health service interruptions can result in further complications, thus reversing the progress of SDG 3. Other than health concerns, education, and gender equality, COVID-19 has also impacted the global economy. Due to the widespread implementation of quarantines and lockdowns all over the world, most businesses went down and people lost their jobs. These impact the scope of Goal 8, which is to promote sustained economic growth, employment, and decent work for all (Goal 8 | Department of Economic and Social Affairs, 2020). With the rise of unemployment, a lot of people could retract to poverty. According to the World Bank (2020), the impact of the global pandemic could push from 88 million to 115 million people into poverty. This greatly impact the scope of Goal 1, which is to end poverty in all forms (Goal 1 | Department of Economic and Social Affairs, 2020), and Goal 2, to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable nutrition (Goal 2 | Department of Economic and Social Affairs, 2020). As the rising impact of the novel coronavirus to the mentioned goals, it is no doubt that it will also affect the rest of the SDGs. The challenges the world is currently facing and how it takes a toll on the SDGs should not lead us to think that we have lost the fight for sustainable development. Hence, we should consider this as the time to unite and address the difficulties COVID-19 presented that hinders the progression in achieving the 2030 Agenda. Governments across the globe must improve their effectiveness and efficiency upon responding to the impact of the coronavirus. Quite frankly, I was not aware of the SDGs before arriving at this topic as this is not being significantly known to the people. Most of the masses are not aware of these sustainable goals. From here, details about the SDGs should be widespread among countries so that people would have awareness. The media can be utilized in this matter to spread information. If people are educated with the SDGs, they can make actions they are capable of doing, and those little contributions can sum up into leading towards achieving the goals. Each one of us has an important role in fighting the challenges. If we become united to take actions, then it will indeed be true that no one will be left behind. References BIC Group Official.
