Research Proposal

This research proposal examines the relationship between parental involvement and the academic performance of primary students in grades 1 and 2 in Mauritius. A literature review found that parental involvement has strong positive effects on student motivation and performance. The study will design a questionnaire to assess how the marks of 50 primary students in math, English, and French relate to parental involvement. Statistical analysis using tools like hypothesis testing and regression will be conducted on the quantitative data to draw inferences.

1 and grade 2) in Mauritius
Participants: GROUP 6

2. HURRYMUN Manisha Vijayta (2100054)

Introduction
The purpose of this study is to articulate the relationship between parental involvement and
the academic performance of primary students (grades 1 & 2) in Mauritius. We cannot ignore
the fact that the Covid 19 pandemic has had a great impact on the education system in the
world, and since, most of the classes are being run online. In Mauritius, several online
learning software has been implemented to cater for the completion of academic syllabuses
and facilitate the tasks of students and educators.
Literature review
According, to an article titled ‘The effects of parental involvement on students’ academic
self-efficacy, engagement and intrinsic motivation’ from an international journal of
experimental psychology (vol.30, 2010), the study of the effects of various dimensions of
parental involvement on the academic performance of students were conducted. The study
showed strong positive effects on the motivational and academic performance of students.
This study would help to better understand how the academic performance of primary
students in Mauritius can be improved with the broadest possible support of parental
involvement in collaboration with educators.
Research Design
A simple questionnaire will be designed to assess the academic performance of primary
students in relation to parental involvement. A population of 50 parents will be asked to
answer questions concerning their involvement in their children’s academic tasks and the
percentage of marks obtained in the three core subjects (Maths, English, and French) for
semesters, will be assessed.
Research type: It will consist of both quantitative and qualitative analysis which will include
the percentage of marks of students in the three core subjects (Maths, English, and French)
and parental involvement. Sources: The questionnaire will help in the collection of
quantitative data which is the percentage of marks of 50 students in three core subjects
(Maths, English, and French) for the semesters in relation to parental involvement. A
comparison of the academic performance of primary students and parental involvement will
be assessed.
Research Methods: Statistical tools like hypothesis testing, the confidence interval, and
regression rule will be used to have a statistical approach thereby presenting the collected
data in a comparable manner. The SPSS software will be used to facilitate the analysis and
documentation of the collected data. Inferences of the hypothesis will be made according to
the statistical values obtained.
