IMPORTANCE AND IMPLICATIONS OF EAP

The Employee Assistance Program is a work-based intervention program

designed to help employees solve personal problems that may adversely
affect employee performance. EAP has traditionally helped workers with
problems such as alcohol or drug abuse; however, most now cover a wide
range of topics such as child or elderly care, interpersonal challenges,
financial or legal issues, health issues, and traumatic events such as
workplace violence. Providers that are part of a comprehensive health
insurance plan or independent EAP providers provide plans to employees
for free. Services are usually provided via telephone, video consultation,
online chat, e-mail interaction or face-to-face.
When a tragic event occurs, it is reassuring to know that there is a system
in place to help employees. Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) are
designed to provide support to employees who face life issues that may
affect their ability to work and be productive in the workplace. Having
resources like EAP to support employees in times of need demonstrates
that employers care about the health of their workforce and are willing to
invest to support their health.
A colleague can provide references; or, an internet search will reveal a
multitude of EAP providers. The EAP can help a struggling employee by
providing support as well as an agency to discuss their problems.
As a result, employees have improved stress levels, which will positively
affect co-workers. The EAP can be an integral part of a comprehensive
employee wellness program.
