It was a beautiful bright yellow with a perfectly reproduced Scrabble board on the front. The tiles on the board carried the message ‘Gyles Brandreth loves rabble’, I wore the jumper to several National Scrabble Cham- pionships. My Scrabble didn’t improve, but somehow I sensed that my stock rose. The jumper was much admired and it gave me a taste for novelty knitwear. ‘That taste turned into a passion a year or two (and three or four more fun jumpers) later when I happened to pass a chic shop in Kensington and noticed a very striking jumper on display in the window. It featured a pair of impressive cockatoos. [went into the shop, blanched at the price but bought the jumper nonctheless. A week or so later I was back at the same shop. This time T bought a sleeveless navy blue pullover that boasted a princely frog on the front. Both jumpers, of course, were designed and made by George Hostler. By the time I'd acquired half-a-dozen more ot his incredible Knitted creations I had got to know George personally. Born in Northumberland he was a sculptor by training (Durham University. BA Honsin Fine Art) who, having exhibited in Britain, in Europe and in Australia, decided about ten years ago to abandon his hammer and chisel in favour of knitting needles. Today he is one of the world’s most sought-after and admired knitwear designers, whose work is worn by the beautiful and famous on both sides of the Atlantic — not least, of course, by Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales. Thanks to this, book you too can now be cressed in an original Hostler creation, ‘What you'll find in the following pages are the patterns for over three dozen favourites ~ my favourites, George's favourites, the favourites, of viewers who have seen me wearing the jumpers on television and written to ask for the patterns. Because I've worn over a hundred different wit-knits on TV I rather thought I'd model each and ev one for the book as well. For reasons best known to themselves, the publishers felt you would prefer tif I didn’t do all the modelling myself but involved family and friends ~ so that’s what F've done. Despite the fact that some of them are very old friends (collectively I've known them for more than two hundred years), as you'll see they are all young and very beautiful. They are very generous too: by giving their time to the book they have helped raise a substantial sum for one of Britai most important charities, the National Playing Fields Association, in what is its Diamond Jubilee Year. ‘The knitwear in Wit Knuts is fun, is fabulous, is unique — and now it’s Enjoy it!
