Critique Paper on
Heneral Luna
“Heneral Luna” is one of the best historical films ever made by Filipinos especially Mr. Jerrold
Tarog, the director of the movie. It reveals all the details and information that Heneral Luna and
his men did previously. The filmmaker wants us to understand that Heneral Luna did not give
up the fight until the end, even though other Generals and Government officials did not assist
him in any way. Another message is that Filipinos can defeat the Americans despite of lack of
supplies, equipment, etc. Heneral Luna also demonstrates his aggressiveness toward quitters
and traitors on his side, as well as his patriotism for the country he loves the most. The film is
completely engaging because the graphics and emotions show that the film is worth watching.
Its goosebumps moments transport us back to the events of the Philippine-American War. It
appeals to many Filipinos, particularly the youth, because it inspires all of us the power of
bravery and cooperation toward one another. Another reason why it appeals to the youth is
that it teaches us about the history of the Philippines and the heroism of Filipinos in the past.
The filmmaker was able to depict not only Heneral Luna's true story, but also the lives of
Filipinos. General Luna was lauded for his brilliant ideas in leading his revolutionaries against
the Americans. Despite his reputation as a war leader, many of the businessmen who helped
the Republic of the Philippines obtain the necessary supplies for the war despised him because
he treated them as traitors for putting their businesses and families first, and they wanted to
negotiate with the Americans so that they would not be implicated in the revolution. Gen. Luna
sees it as treason in their own country because they wanted foreigners to control the
Philippines, and it appears that they are selling their own country. Many Filipinos, especially
young people, are drawn to it because it provides us with the power of bravery and
cooperation. It appeals to young people because it teaches us about Philippine history and past
heroism.
We wanted to know what or how history happened before we were born in this modern era,
why and how our government and country were perverted into our own hands, and he
represents us Joven Hernando a photographer of Luna, because of our natural curiosity. He is
the example of a new generation that is always ready to defend and patronize its homeland.
Also, generation that will shape the future. The beginning of a new era in which the corruption
of our government can be addressed. Joven Hernando is the only character in "Heneral Luna" in
whom I can be involved and curious. I believe Joven Hernando represents the next generation
because every word Luna says to him may help the next generation push themselves to their
limits and show that every generation has a new leader who can stand up and demonstrate
their leadership. Joven Hernando is another figure who should be preserved because, through
his role in the film he can persuade Filipinos that Luna's valor is genuine and worth fighting for.
Heneral Luna is always concerned about Joven Hernando's safety because he represents the
next generation of Filipinos, and Heneral Luna wants to ensure that his words and fighting
resolve serve as an inspiration to the next generation of Filipinos. Add it all together. The line
"Ang kalaban natin ay ang sarili natin" from the film "Heneral Luna" struck me the hardest.
Because the Filipinos were terrified and unsure what to do because of Luna's unkindness, they
devised a strategy to fight the same race, or "lahi," which is Filipino. We will be unable to fight
or win a war if our collaborative and teamwork system fails due to our fear. If we are to win a
war, we must demonstrate our aggression and desire to protect our homeland, the Philippines.
Lastly, the film is excellent for people who are open-minded and enthusiastic about the
Philippines. This is another classic historical film I'd like to watch again and learn more about.
