Example: Design The Corner Column Shown in The Figure

The document provides design parameters and calculations for designing a corner column subjected to axial and biaxial bending loads. Key details include: - The column is 300mm x 300mm with 40mm cover and subjected to a total axial load of 1500kN. - Biaxial bending is considered with My=77kNm and Mz=60kNm at the base. - Reinforcement is calculated to be 2322mm^2 using d2/h=0.15, and provided with 4 T32 bars for a total area of 3216mm^2. - All parameters and calculations are provided to complete the column design according to given structural loads and code requirements.

Design the corner column

Reaction from Beam
shown in the figure. 2/1 - 300 kN Reaction from Beam
2/2 - 400 kN

Reaction from Beam

1/1 - 350 kN
Reaction from Beam
1/2 kN

Ground Level
Design parameters (general)

Reinforcement yield strength fy = 500 N/mm2

(reminder fd = fy/1.15 = 0.87fy = 435 N/mm2

Concrete strength C30/35 fck = 30 N/mm2

The above parameters are both decided by the Design Engineer,

although fy is generally standard.

fck would be the same thoughout the job

There are then specific parameters for this slab:

Column cover 40mm

Cover depends upon location

Reinforcement diameter (beam) 25mm (estimated, may change)

at this stage.

TOTAL axial load = 300 + 350 + 400 + 450 = 1500 kN

As a starting point, consider:

Ac > 1500 x 103/(0.567 x 30) = 88,183 mm2 = 297mm x 297mm
Ac > 1500 x 103/(0.567 x 30) = 88,183 mm2 = 297mm x 297mm

Try column size 300mm x 300mm (h/20 = 300/20 = 15mm < 20mm)

This is MY decision, later calculations will tell me if it is a correct decision.

With significant applied moments, this could prove to be too ambitious.
(if I am wrong I simply have to re-do the calculations)

We are now in a position to calculate eccentricities:

ex = ey = h/2 + 20 = 150 + 20 = 170mm
Loading

Level 2 Level 1
NED = 300 + 400 = 700 kN
Mz = 300 x 0.17 = 51 kNm
My = 400 x 0.17 = 68 kNm

Ground Level Level 1

NED = 350 + 450 + 700 (from above)= 1500 kN
Mz = 350 x 0.17 = 60 kNm
My = 450 x 0.17 = 77 kNm

Clearly the critical column is Ground First

Column is subject to biaxial bending:

Where columns are bent about two axes, uniaxial checks will suffice if
the following are satisfied:

Firstly: and

Since these are clearly satisfied

Also: or where

ez = 60 x 103/1500 = 40; ey = 77 x 103/1500 = 51

ez/b = 40/300 = 0.133 ey/h = 51/300 = 0.17

>0.2 > 0.2

Biaxial bending must be considered.

My/b = 77/300 = 0.256 Mz/h = 60/300 = 0.2

My/b > Mz/h

Hence:

b = h = 300-40-25/2 = 247.5

MEd = 77 + 0.444 x (300/300) x 60 = 104 kNm

d2 = 40 + 25/2 = 52.5mm; h = 300; d2/h = 0.175

Use d2/h = 0.15 for chart selection

Asfyk/bhfck = 0.43

As = 0.43 x 300 x 300 x 30/500 = 2322 mm2

Use 4 T32 bars (1 in each corner) = Asprov = 4 x 804 = 3216mm2

Strictly speaking, this modifies d2 to 40 + 32/2 = 56;

d2/h = 56/300 = 0.187

so we should check using d2/h = 0.2 for chart selection

Revised Asfyk/bhfck = 0.49

As = 0.49 x 300 x 300 x 30/500 = 2646 mm2

Use 4 T32 bars (1 in each corner) = Asprov = 4 x 804 = 3216mm2

THIS COMPLETES THE COLUMN DESIGN
