Belt Drive Flat Belt 1. V-Belt 2. Toothed Belt 3.: Belts

The document contains examples of belt drive design calculations. It includes 5 examples of calculating belt width, minimum angle of wrap, and belt length for different pulley systems transmitting various amounts of power. Design parameters like pulley diameter, center distance, coefficient of friction, and allowable belt stress are provided. Calculations are shown to solve for the required values.

Example 1
Tuesday, 11 January 2022 1:24 pm

A pulley 610mm in diameter transmits 40kW at 500rpm. The arc of contact between the belt and
pulley is 144 degrees, the coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is 0.35 and the safe
working stress of the belt is 2.1MPa. Find the width of the belt if its thickness is 6mm.

Example 2
Tuesday, 11 January 2022 1:46 pm

An industrial fan running at 600 rpm is driven by a 25-kW, 960rpm, induction motor. The pulley
mounted on the motor shaft is 270mm. Center to center distance is 1.45 meters and use f = 0.35.
Determine the minimum angle of wrap.

From the previous problem, determine the belt width. Assume t = 5mm and allowable stress
of 2.86MPa for the belt material.

Example 5
Tuesday, 11 January 2022 2:10 pm

A 500 mm pulley running at 400rpm drives another pulley at the same diameter by means of a
12-mm thick leather belt with an allowable stress of 2.86MPa. The power transmitted is 21kW. If
the center distance between shafts is 2.5 meters, determine the belt width required and the belt
length. Use f = 0.35 and density of the belt material be 950 kg/cu.m. Consider the effects of
centrifugal stress.
