Semi Detailed-Lesson-Plan-in-Mathematics-8

This lesson plan outlines a mathematics lesson on factoring polynomials for 8th grade students. The lesson involves dividing students into groups to solve sample problems involving factoring polynomials. Students will then present their solutions and the teacher will lead a discussion on the steps and importance of factoring. An activity called "Cabbage Dance" will have students practice factoring polynomials by answering problems drawn from paper cabbages. To assess understanding, students will complete an individual worksheet with additional problems involving factoring polynomials.

Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 8

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, at least 80% of the learners are expected to;
a. evaluate problems involving factors of polynomials;
b. explain the importance of factoring in solving problems involving factors of
polynomials;
c. perform the process of solving problems involving factoring of polynomials.
A. Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of
factors of polynomials, rational algebraic expressions, linear equations and inequalities in
two variables, systems of linear equations and inequalities in two variables and linear
functions.
B. Performance Standard: The learner is able to formulate real-life problems involving
factors of polynomials, rational algebraic expressions, linear equations and inequalities in
two variables, systems of linear equations and inequalities in two variables and linear
functions, and solve these problems accurately using a variety of strategies.
C. Learning Competency: The learner solves problems involving factors of polynomials.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic: Problems involving Factors of Polynomials
B. References: Mathematics 8 book
C. Materials: PowerPoint presentation, Paper-made Cabbage
D. Value Infusion: Collaboration, Camaraderie, Love
III. LEARNING TASK
I. Preliminary Activities
a.
➢ Prayer
➢ Greetings
➢ Cleanliness and Orderliness
➢ Checking of Attendance
➢ Setting house rules
b. Review
➢ Recall previous topics through series of questions
c. Motivation
Initial Activity:
Given the following polynomials in Set A, find and match them with their
appropriate factors in Set B.
SET A SET B
2 (4𝑥 + 7)(2𝑥 − 3)
𝑥 − 6𝑥 − 40
36𝑥 2 − 25𝑦 2 6(3𝑥 + 4𝑦)
18𝑥 + 24𝑦 (4𝑥 + 7)(4𝑥 + 7)
8𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 21 (6𝑥 − 5𝑦)(6𝑥 + 5𝑦)
16𝑥 2 + 56𝑥 + 49 (𝑥 − 10)(𝑥 + 4)

II. Activity Proper

1. Activity
The teacher will divide the class into five groups. Each group will be given a strip
of paper with a problem written on it and they will be given ample time to solve the
problem. Afterwards, each group will have a representative who will write down their
solutions and answers on the board.
The problems which will be given to the learners are the following:
Group 1: Find two consecutive integers whose product is 56.
Group 2: The area of a garden in a shape of a square is 𝑥 2 + 18𝑥 + 81 square
meters. Find the length of its side.
Group 3: A rectangular plot is 6 meters longer than it is wide. The area of the plot
is 16 square meters. Find the length and width of the plot.
Group 4: The length of a rectangle is two feet less than 3 times the width. If the
area is 65 square feet, find its dimensions.
Group 5: The area of a square is numerically equal to five times its perimeter. Find
the length of a side of the square.
2. Analysis
The teacher will ask the following questions in order to check the understanding of
the learners on the activity.
➢ How did you solve the problems? What are the steps you made?
➢ What did you do to factor the polynomials easily?
➢ Have you experienced any difficulty in solving the problems? Why or why
not?
➢ What are your difficulties in solving the problems?
➢ How important do you think it is to apply the concepts of factoring in solving
these problems?
3. Abstraction
➢ Presentation of Objectives
➢ Discusses the process of solving problems which involve the concepts of factoring
➢ Raises questions and asks some students to answer such questions
➢ Calls out volunteers to summarize and synthesize the lesson
4. Application
Group Activity: Cabbage Dance
The class will form a circle at the center of the classroom. The students will be
given two cabbages. As the music starts, the students will pass the cabbages to whoever
they want to. The students who are holding the cabbages as the music stops will each
peel off one leaf and answer the problem written on it on the board. Those who have
already answered can take a seat. The game ends when every student has answered
and all of the leaves of the cabbages are peeled off. Five (5) points will be given to the
students who managed to get the correct answers and three (3) points to those who got
incorrect ones.
IV. EVALUATION
The learners will be given a series of problems to be done individually.
Direction: On a clean sheet of paper, solve the following problems involving factors of
polynomials.
1. The area of a square is 4𝑥 2 + 12𝑥 + 9 square units. Find the length of its side.
2. A rectangular plot is 2 yards longer than it is wide. The area of the plot is 80
square yards. Find the width and length of the plot.
3. Find two consecutive even whole numbers whose product is 168.
4. The base of a triangle is 4 meters longer than the height. Find the height if the
area of the triangle is 16 square meters.
V. AGREEMENT
Read and understand in advance the next topic which is about rational algebraic
expressions.
