The document provides a coursework assessment brief for a traffic survey and junction design report module. It outlines that students will be assessed in groups of up to 4 members on designing a new junction layout for an existing traffic intersection in Surrey, England. Students must analyze existing traffic volume data, design a roundabout solution using CAD software, and use traffic modeling software to test that their proposed design works under current and increased traffic loads. The assignment is worth 10% of the module grade and students have 15 hours to complete it. The report should include an introduction, analysis of existing traffic conditions, proposed junction redesign, and modeling/analysis of the redesign.

Module Learning Outcomes

The following module learning outcomes and professional body learning outcomes are tested in
this assessment:

 Debate, based on case studies, Government policy, regulatory framework on the provision
and management of integrated transportation system. including highway, environmental
pollution issues and its methods of alleviation.

 Develop detailed technical knowledge in the areas of hydrology, waste water and
transportation infrastructure including highway design.

Assessment task and specific terms

The aim of the coursework is to analyse an existing T junction (Intersection of Brighton Road/Victoria
Road in Surbiton, Surrey) and propose a new design which would accommodate an increased traffic.

A. The Google map view of the location:

B. The Traffic streams using the Junction:

The report should include/cover the following tasks:

1.
A. An introduction: aim of “Traffic Assessment” (refer to the National Planning Policy
Framework);
B. Information about traffic surveys, types of survey and expected results.
C. Explain the use of PCUs;
D. Describe the location and type of the junction being considered and the general
information about the traffic flow on the major arm and minor arm;

2.
A. Using the survey data, given as collected, and Junctions 8 prove that the junction works.
Comment on the results (LOS, type of traffic flow, etc);
B. Manipulate the data, with a rationale (i.e. the impact of a new development on the local
traffic; generated and attracted trips), to make the junction fail;
C. Assume a growth factor between 1 and 2. Comment on the results (LOS, type of traffic
flow, etc);

3.
A. Produce a viable solution, i.e. a roundabout design, drawn up using Vehicle tracking
(AutoCAD);
B. Check that an articulated lorry (British, FTA 1998 16.5m) can manoeuver round the
roundabout by carrying out a swept path analysis (attach A3 drawing);
4.
A. Check if the LOS of the proposed upgrade is satisfactory. Use Junctions 8 to design
and analyse a roundabout solution using the increased traffic data; if no viable solution is
to be achieved, propose option(s) for other solutions.

5.
B. Show the LOS of the 3 arms (attach A3 drawings with all relevant technical information:
geometry, visibility, entry path curvature);
C. Discuss the workability of the final solution;

Guidelines

This coursework is to be carried out and submitted in a group of 4 member (max).

All Figures (diagrams/photos), tables and appendices need to be titled and numbered with all
AutoCAD drawings to have title boxes. Captions and citations must be used where appropriate with
references cited and listed using Harvard style. If a hard copy is submitted, all A3 drawings are to be
folded to A4 size.
Report should be word processed with a maximum of 3000 words excluding diagrams and
references; Maximum 15 pages, text size: 12, Maximum 4 A3 drawings

Referencing.
You should undertake your own appropriate further reading and research in relation to the matters
addressed in this coursework brief. Evidence of independent reading and research will be
rewarded. A list of References must be presented at the end of the report listing all bibliographic
sources cited.”
Please see the university guidelines on referencing and avoid citing Wikipedia. You should not
copy and paste more than one or two sentences and these quotes should be referenced using the
Harvard referencing conventions.
Any and all references to materials used must be acknowledged in line with the Harvard referencing
system to source facts.
Writing style

School of Engineering and the Environment. Coursework Assessment Brief. Page 4 of 5

The writing style should be incisive, factually based and focused on the performance of the company
of your choice. The accounts for both companies will be a key point of reference and are available
in the Investor sections of the companies’ websites.
Feedback: Group marks for the coursework will be provided 20 working days after submission in
Term 2 on Canvas.

Assessment Criteria
The marks for the coursework will be allocated as follows
- An introduction: aim of the Traffic Assessment (refer to the National Planning 10 marks
Policy Framework);
- Information about traffic surveys, types of survey and expected results. Explain
the use of PCUs;
- Describe the location and type of the junction being considered and the general
information about the traffic flow on the major arm and minor arm;
- Using the survey data, given as collected, and Junctions 8 software prove that the 25 marks
junction works. Comment on the results (LOS, type of traffic flow, etc);
- Manipulate the data, with a rationale (i.e. the impact of a new development on the
local traffic; generated and attracted trips), to make the junction fail.
Assume a growth factor between 1 and 2. Comment on the results (LOS, type of
traffic flow, etc);
- Produce a viable solution, i.e. a roundabout design, drawn up using Vehicle 20 marks
tracking (AutoCAD);
Show the LOS of the 3 arms (attach A3 drawings with all relevant technical
information: geometry, visibility, entry path curvature);
- Check that the LOS of the proposed upgrade is satisfactory. Use the ‘Refresh 25 marks
data link’ icon to generate the Vehicle tracking roundabout into Junctions 8 and
analyse it using the increased traffic data;
Check that an articulated lorry (British, FTA 1998 16.5m) can maneuver round the 10 marks
roundabout by carrying out a swept path analysis (attach A3 drawing);

Sections, References, Appendices, Labelling of tables and graphs ….etc. as
appropriate
