All assignments must be submitted by the date and time specified above.
Students are required to submit an electronic copy of their completed assignment via the
Assignments section of Canvas and follow any specific instructions. Any change to this instruction
will be advised via Canvas.
In line with Faculty policy for late submission of coursework, any work submitted up to a week late
will be capped at 40%. Coursework submitted after this time will receive 0%.

Please note that if you submit a piece of work you have judged yourself fit to undertake the
assessment and cannot claim mitigating circumstances retrospectively.

Debate, based on case studies, Government policy, regulatory framework on the provision
and management of integrated transportation system. including highway, environmental
pollution issues and its methods of alleviation.
The aim of the coursework is to analyse an existing T junction (Intersection of Brighton Road/Victoria
Road in Surbiton, Surrey) and propose a new design which would accommodate an increased traffic.

1.
A. An introduction: aim of “Traffic Assessment” (refer to the National Planning Policy
Framework);
B. Information about traffic surveys, types of survey and expected results.
C. Explain the use of PCUs;
D. Describe the location and type of the junction being considered and the general
information about the traffic flow on the major arm and minor arm;
2.
A. Using the survey data, given as collected, and Junctions 8 prove that the junction works.
Comment on the results (LOS, type of traffic flow, etc);
B. Manipulate the data, with a rationale (i.e. the impact of a new development on the local
traffic; generated and attracted trips), to make the junction fail;
C. Assume a growth factor between 1 and 2. Comment on the results (LOS, type of traffic
flow, etc);
3.
A. Produce a viable solution, i.e. a roundabout design, drawn up using Vehicle tracking
(AutoCAD);
B. Check that an articulated lorry (British, FTA 1998 16.5m) can manoeuver round the
roundabout by carrying out a swept path analysis (attach A3 drawing);
4.
A. Check if the LOS of the proposed upgrade is satisfactory. Use Junctions 8 to design
and analyse a roundabout solution using the increased traffic data; if no viable solution is
to be achieved, propose option(s) for other solutions.
5.
B. Show the LOS of the 3 arms (attach A3 drawings with all relevant technical information:
geometry, visibility, entry path curvature);
C. Discuss the workability of the final solution;
Guidelines
Referencing.
You should undertake your own appropriate further reading and research in relation to the matters
addressed in this coursework brief. Evidence of independent reading and research will be
rewarded. A list of References must be presented at the end of the report listing all bibliographic
sources cited.”
Please see the university guidelines on referencing and avoid citing Wikipedia. You should not
copy and paste more than one or two sentences and these quotes should be referenced using the
Harvard referencing conventions.
Any and all references to materials used must be acknowledged in line with the Harvard referencing

Assessment Criteria
The marks for the coursework will be allocated as follows
- An introduction: aim of the Traffic Assessment (refer to the National Planning 10 marks
Policy Framework);
- Information about traffic surveys, types of survey and expected results. Explain
the use of PCUs;
- Describe the location and type of the junction being considered and the general
information about the traffic flow on the major arm and minor arm;
- Using the survey data, given as collected, and Junctions 8 software prove that the 25 marks
junction works. Comment on the results (LOS, type of traffic flow, etc);
- Manipulate the data, with a rationale (i.e. the impact of a new development on the
local traffic; generated and attracted trips), to make the junction fail.
Assume a growth factor between 1 and 2. Comment on the results (LOS, type of
traffic flow, etc);
- Produce a viable solution, i.e. a roundabout design, drawn up using Vehicle 20 marks
tracking (AutoCAD);
Show the LOS of the 3 arms (attach A3 drawings with all relevant technical
information: geometry, visibility, entry path curvature);
- Check that the LOS of the proposed upgrade is satisfactory. Use the ‘Refresh 25 marks
data link’ icon to generate the Vehicle tracking roundabout into Junctions 8 and
analyse it using the increased traffic data;
Check that an articulated lorry (British, FTA 1998 16.5m) can maneuver round the 10 marks
roundabout by carrying out a swept path analysis (attach A3 drawing);
Conclusions, discussing the workability of the solution(s);
The presentation of a technical report including: Table of contents Introduction, 10 marks
Sections, References, Appendices, Labelling of tables and graphs ….etc. as
appropriate
