Experiment No.4: To Determine Voltage Regulation of 3 Alternator by Direct Loading

The document describes an experiment to determine the voltage regulation of a 3-phase alternator under direct loading. Key steps include: 1) Connecting the alternator, motor, loads and measuring instruments in the circuit diagram. 2) Running the alternator at rated speed and voltage while varying the load. 3) Recording voltage and current readings at each load step while keeping speed and field current constant. 4) Calculating the percentage voltage regulation at different load levels. 5) Finding the average voltage regulation to be 7.35% based on the load test results.

4: To determine voltage regulation of 3ᴓ alternator

by direct loading.

Aim: To determine voltage regulation of 3ᴓ alternator by direct loading.

Apparatus:

Sr. No. Equipment Rating

1 DC Shunt Motor 3HP, 220V, 12A, 1500 rpm
2 3ᴓ Alternator 3KVA, 415V, 4.3A, 1500 rpm
3 AC Voltmeter 0-300V,
0-60V
4 DC Ammeter 0-2A
5 AC Ammeter 0-20A,
0-5A
6 Rheostat 38Ω,8.5A,
1140Ω,1.2A
7 Tachometer 0-3000 rpm

Theory:

The voltage regulation of an alternator is the rise in voltage at the terminal when the
load is reduced from FL to zero keeping speed and field current constant. In direct
loading method, the alternator is made to run at synchronous speed and the field
current is adjusted so that rated voltage appears across the terminals. Now load is
increased till rated current and flows through armature. The load is verified in steps
and field current is adjusted for every reading so that it remains constant.

The corresponding armature current voltage is noted. The voltage regulation value
obtained by this method is accurate because a particular load at required at power
factor is actually connected to take the readings.
Connection Diagram:

Procedure:

1) Make connections as per circuit diagram.

2) Rotate the alternator upto rated speed and then switch on the field excitation of
alternator.
3) Adjust speed and terminal voltage at rated value.
4) Vary load and calculate reading of voltmeter and ammeter.
5) Now, switch on total load keeping speed and excitation constant.
6) Find regulation of each load current.
Observation Table:

Field current, IF= 0.58A and Speed, N=1500 rpm

Terminal voltage, VL Armature current, IA Load Power, PL

(in V) (in A) (in kW)
415 0 0
411 0.5 0.3
404 0.7 0.6
393 1.5 0.9
381 2 1.5
373 2.3 1.8
362 2.5 2.1

Calculation:
Result:

For IA= 0.5A, %V.R.= 0.97%

For IA= 0.7A, %V.R.= 2.72%
For IA= 1.5A, %V.R.= 5.6%
For IA= 2A, %V.R.= 8.92%
For IA= 2.3A, %V.R.= 11.26%
For IA= 2. 5A, %V.R.= 14.64 %
The average voltage regulation is 7.35%

Graph:

Conclusion:
As the load is varied, the terminal voltage varies according to the type of load. As
load is increased, armature current increases and voltage regulation also goes on
increasing.
