Mathematics: Quarter 1 - Module 4

This module teaches multiplication strategies for multiplying two-digit numbers mentally. It explains that multiplication is repeated addition and introduces strategies like breaking numbers into tens and ones. Examples show multiplying two-digit by one-digit and two-digit by two-digit numbers mentally. Students practice multiplying numbers using mental math and the distributive property. The goal is for students to multiply two-digit numbers with products up to 200 mentally.

Lesson 1
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:
 multiply mentally 2-digit by 1-to 2-digit numbers with
products up to 200 and explain the strategies used

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Multiplication is a quicker way of adding the same number multiple
times. Since we are repeating the same number, multiplication is also
called repeated addition. When we multiply two or more numbers, the
answer is called the product.
The mental multiplication strategies will let you do mental math
faster than a calculator entirely in your head. Learning the mental
multiplication will be like learning to ride a bicycle. Once you learn it, it is
really very hard to forget it.

LESSON PROPER

In multiplying mentally, you must have mastered single-digit

multiplication. It is important that you know your single-digit multiplication
tables from 1x1 to 9x9 before you do the mental multiplication of large
numbers.

WHAT’S IN
Write the product.
1. 8 x2 = ____ 6. 9 x 8 = ____
2. 7 x 6 = ____ 7. 3 x 6 = ____
3. 4 x5 = ____ 8. 2 x 8 = ____
4. 6 x7 = ____ 9. 6 x 6 = ____
5. 2 x 3 = ____ 10.5 x 9 = ____

PRESENTATION

Justine and his brother help their parents in harvesting mangoes.

They can harvest 65 kilograms of mango in a day. How many kilograms
of mango can they harvest in 3 days?
VALUING:
What attitude did Justine and his brother show in the problem?
Do you help your parents too?
Do you have fruit trees in your backyard or farm? What are they?
What benefits can you get from mango?

WHAT’S NEW

Analyze the problem.

 How many kilograms of mango can Justine and his brother
harvest in a day?
 What is asked in the problem?
 What is the number sentence?
 How can we solve the problem mentally?

A. Multiplying mentally 2-Digit by 1-digit numbers with Products
up to 200.

Solution 1: by using mental computation

Mentally multiply the ones. 3x5 = 15
Mentally multiply the tens by ones 3 x 60 = 180
Mentally add the partial products 15 + 180 = 195

4
___________________________________________________________GRADE 4
Mod4Q1W4: Numbers and Number Sense

Solution 2: by using the Distributive Property

Rename 65 as 60 + 5.
3 x 65 = 3 x (60 +5)
Using distributive property,
3 x 65 = (3 x 60) + (3 x 5) Multiply 3 x 60 and 3 x 5
= 180 + 15
Add the product
= 195

A. WHAT IS IT

Multiply mentally and give the products of the following:

1. 2 x 84 = ____ 4. 3 x 64=____

2. 4 x 42 = ____ 5. 7 x 24 = ____

3. 8 x 15 = ____

WHAT’S NEW
B. Multiplying mentally 2-Digit by 2-digit numbers with Products up
to 200

Mang Carlito planted 12 varieties of vegetables last year. Per

variety, he was able to have 16 bags of vegetables. How many bags
of vegetables did he harvest?

Analyze the problem

a. How many bags of vegetables did Mang Carlito harvest?
b. What is the number sentence? (16x12=n)
c. How can we solve the problem mentally?

5
___________________________________________________________GRADE 4
Mod4Q1W4: Numbers and Number Sense

Solution 1 using mental computation

The number sentence is 16 x 12 = n
Mentally multiply the ones. 2 x 16 = 32
Mentally multiply the tens by ones 10 x 16 = 160
Mentally add the partial products 32 + 160 = 192

Solution 2 by using Distributive Property

16 x 12 = 16 x (10 + 2 ) Rename 16 as 10 + 6
Using distributive property
16 x 12 = (16 x 10) + ( 16 x 2) - Multiply 16 x 10 and 16 x 2
=160 + 32 - add the product
= 192

B. WHAT IS IT

Mentally solve and write the products of the following:

1. 15 x 12 = _____ 4. 12 x 14 = _____

2. 13x 11 = _____ 5. 16 X 11 = _____

3. 14 x 13 = _____

Distributive Property of Multiplication over

addition. It means that the product of a number and the
sum of two numbers is equal to the sum of the products of
the number and each of the addends.
