SUBJECT VERB AGREEMENT!!
For todays lesson, we will be tackling about
English grammar particularly in?

Absolutely!

LESSON PROPER

Subject-verb agreement is a grammatical rule

which states that the subject and the verb must
agree in number. This means that the subject
and the verb needs to be singular or both needs
to be plural. (pupils raise hands)
But before that, let us first identify what is the
subject and verb in a sentence. Anyone knows Teacher the subject is a word or group of
what is a subject? words which we are talking in the sentence.

Yes Melanie?

(pupils raise hands)

Very good! Or simply it is the person, animal,
or thing being described in a sentence. The verb is a word that tells about the action
being performed and the state being of the
How about verb? subject.

Yes Pablo?

Very good! to clarify let us have an example:

Lee!!
Lee eats the pie. eats!!
Now can you identify the subject in this
sentence?

That’s good. How about the verb?

Impressive! Now let’s move to the rules in

Subject-Verb Agreement.
1. A singular subject requires a singular
RULES IN SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT verb a plural subject requires a plural
verb.
(posting of visuals)

Jessica, can you please read the first and main

rule?

Thank you. This means that if the subject in the

sentence is singular, the must be in its singular
form. If the subject is plural, then verb must
also be in its plural form. To clarify’ let’s take
examples:

The apple falls. Yes teacher!

subject verb

A flower grows.
subject verb

In the given examples, do subject agrees with

the verb?

Correct! Because both subject and verb is in its

singular form.
Yes teacher!
The stars shine beautifully.
subject verb
Because both the subject and verb is in its
plural form.
The flowers bloom.
subject verb

In this given example, do you think the subject

and verb agrees in number?

Very good! And why do you say so?

Brilliant!
(pupils raise hands)
But then class there is an exemption to this rule,
Pronouns I and You follows a different rule. I observe that the subject are in its singular
For example: form but the verb is in its plural form.

I walk at the park.

You wash the dishes. Yes teacher!

What have you observe in the given examples?

2. Compound subjects connected by and
Yes Ronalyn? uses a plural form of verb.

Absolutely! That is because I and You takes a

different rule.

Is the first rule clear?

Good, let us move on to the next rule. Christian

please read the 2nd rule.

Thank you, now sentence that has two subjects

that is connected by and uses a plural form of
verb.

Example:
Yes teacher.
The ranger and the camper see the bear.

3. If the subject is joined by or, nor,
Chad and Rachelle are transferring to or/either, nor/neither, the verb should

another school.

Since compound subject pertains to two or

more subjects, then the verb must be in plural.
Is it clear?

Good, lets proceed to another rule. Ralph please

read the 3rd rule.

Thank you, now sentences with subjects joined

by or, nor, or/either, nor/neither do consider the
subject nearest to the verb.

Example:
Either her collegues or her boss leads the
opening.
Neither the lab assistant nor the students
were able to download the
information. (pupils raise hands)

From the given example, what did you

observe? Teacher, the subject is not just one but the
subject nearest to the verb is the one being
considered and the other subject is
Yes Cecil? disregarded.

Brilliant!

In this rule, when you see the conjunction or or

nor in a sentence, you are going to use the
subject closer to the verb and use it as a Yes teacher!
reference wether your verb will be in its
singular or plural form. Understood?
4. If there's a phrase that comes between the
Now we will move on to the next rule, Sergio subject and the verb, consider the subject and
please read. not the noun or pronoun in the phrase.

Thank you, the next rule is a little bit confusing.

For example;

verb

As what you've seen, there are sentences that

may seem having two subject, all you have to Yes teacher!
do is analyze the sentence. In the given
example, "the teacher" will be our subject
which is singular that why we use "walks" as a
form verb. Is it clear?

The next rule would be:

5. Indifinite pronouns like someone, somebody,

each, either one, everyone, or anyone are
considered singular and needs singular verb
although they convey plural meaning.

This means that sentences composed of

pronouns like someone, somebody, each, either
one, everyone, or anyone needs a singular form
