Picture Archiving and Communication System
Abstract
PACS stands for Picture Archiving and Communication System and is the system that has replaced
x-ray film with digital images. PACS also links the reports for imaging studies with the imaging
study making it easy to view both the images and the associated report at the same time. The
name of our PACS is Synapse and there is a Synapse icon on the desktop of all hospital computers.
PACS resolves many of the problems that were associated with film. Film could only be available
in one place at a time and would frequently result in delayed patient care if it was not immediately
available to the referring physician. With PACS, patient studies can be viewed from any computer
at any of our facilities or from a referring physician’s office. PACS also allows the radiologists to
read studies performed at any of our facilities, from any of our facilities, making them much more
efficient and greatly reducing the turn around time for report dictation.
Any hospital employee who has a legitimate need to view patient images to provide

Picture Archiving and Communication System
1 Introduction
Medical informatics has changed the face and fate of the healthcare industry. Innovative
inventions cutting edge technology have given rise to flawless evalutions, faster diagnosis speedy
recoveries. With an endeavor to empower the health care industry with effective user-friendly image
system, which allows distribution of images within and outside the Hospital using state of the art
technology. It does not reqire installation of any software and can be operated directly from the
This has significantly reduced the Image Processing and Transmission times and helped
in instant acquisition of data and analytical clinical findings. The system is web based, instant
and immensely user friendly. Be it any kind of imaging modality, connect MEDSYNAPSE PACS
to your network and it will make the images instantly accessible. And the major advantages is, you
can avail reports directly at your place anywhere in the world. So what else we are you looking
for ? Just introduce MEDSYNAPSE PACS your system and get images and reports transferred at
your convenience. With MEDSYNAPSE PACS speedy diagnosis and faster recoveries are now just
a click away.
To develop the Picture Archiving and Communication System for the medical field. This
full fledged system will help patients, hospital staff to efficiently and effectively evaluate the pa-
tients. It is an indigenously developed system, which allows distribution of images within and outside
the Hospital using state of the art technology. It does not reqire installation of any software and
can be operated directly from the browser providing unsurpassed ease of use from anywhere.
1.2 Motivation
The Medsynaptic has now become the best PACS creator. The motivation behind it
was Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) improves image routing, retrieval, and
display capabilities among a healthcare facility, specifically the radiology department. This study has

shown a positive impact of PACS on the users from their perspective within the radiology department
Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), a necessary asset in modern hos-
pitals, has proven its crucial status in the radiology department for archiving and fetching medical
images followed by their integration with the radiology information system (RIS). Although PACS
has proven its worth technically, this study assesses its impact on its end users. The purpose of this
study is to measure the level of PACS’s impact on its users in a hospital facility in Saudi Arabia.

Picture Archiving and Communication System
Nowadays, hospitals have become more digitalized and are aiming for a paperless envi-
ronment to ease their process and workflow [1]. The hospital information system (HIS), radiology
information system (RIS), picture archiving communication system (PACS), clinical information
system (CIS), cardiovascular information systems (CVIS), and electronic health record (EHR) are
the integral components of a hospital. These systems are supposedly integrated with one another
within the hospital to ensure that the patient’s health records are complete, correct, and up-to-date.
However, the imaging processes in the radiology department are in need of a whole systematic en-
tity as the medical images cannot be processed here alike other hospital data. In addition, medical
images require routing, storing, and retrieving for which the invention of a specialized system such
as a picture archiving and communication system (PACS) is required to fetch, archive, and process
images from one or many sources. The main purpose of the system is to improve image routing,
retrieval, and display capabilities among a healthcare facility, specifically the radiology department.
PACS is integrated with more than one imaging modalities such as X-Ray, magnetic resonance imag-
ing (MRI), computed tomography (CT), ultrasound and nuclear medicine (NM), and other similar
technologies.
The cross-sectional quantitative study is designed using the survey approach as a method
of data collection. All PACS active users at the radiology department are considered as the target
population. Out of the 160 distributed questionnaires, 100were returned with complete answers,

The Picture Archiving and Communication System will help users to show a positive insight
towards the PACS for its impacts on their daily work. The findings of this study can greatly
contribute to assist the radiology department and help them understand the user’s perception on
PACS. Nevertheless, the study will also show a positive impact, i.e., an indication of the status and
insight of PACS users having a high perception rate towards PACS, which promises more future
PACS-related studies focus on the technical aspect rather than the psychosocial aspect.
Thus, this project aims to explore the level of impact of PACS in the real world. In addition, this
study seeks to find the correlation between the user’s characteristics and behavior towards the PACS.
Proposed system will have following objectives: 1. To determine the impact of PACS on
2. To assess the unique aspects of PACS that influences the users in radiology department.
3. To identify the user’s characteristics associated with their interaction with the PACS.
5. To measure the amount of user experience towards PACS in the study area.

Architecture :It is logical and functional description of the hardware configuration of the sys-
tem. While planning PACS architecture both current and foreseeable issues must be taken into con-
sideration. This is difficult because both organization and the technology are never in static state.
Current Centralized Model :Two Layers 1.Core. 2.Workstation. Thin Client Leveraging
standards. Operating system and Web Browser Technologies. Network speed and Bandwidth.
Integration into other hospital applications. Auto-routing and pre-fetching of images not required.
Scalability. Transitional Technology Incorporate both the models Pre-fetching, routing and fast
retrieval of images. Multiple versions of workstation. Complex Architecture. SAN (storage area
network). NAS (network attached storage). CAS (Content addressable storage). Removable
Media.
A project stage is a subset of activities producing a specific set of deliverables. • Successful conclu-
sion of one stage usually is a pre-requisite for the start of the next stage. • The project Steering
Committee only authorizes the PM to proceed with one stage at a time. • At the end of each stage
the project Steering Committee reviews the whole project status. • Approves the next stage plan
only if it is satisfied that the business case still stands and the project will deliver what is required.
The following stages are often used: • Initiation Stage • Preparation Stage • Deployment Stage •
1. Initiation Stage:Identify stakeholders and define their roles and responsibilities. • Conduct pre-
kick off meetings with different parties to prepare the project plan. • Conduct ‘official’ kick
off meeting with all stakeholders. • Finalize the project plan (scope, timing, responsibilities,
12
Picture Archiving and Communication System
etc. . . . ) acceptance documentation. Develop and approve the project plan by institution
and vendor.
2. Preparation Stage: Procure goods and pre-stage equipment (vendor factory location). • Ship
goods to the destination country and, after import, to the final site. • Analysis of data to
be migrated and confirmation of the method to be used (if any). • Analysis of 3rd party
integrations and agreement on the functional and technical integration specification – mention
3. Deployment: • Deliver goods in one or more deliveries as set out in the project plan. • The
Hospital PM or other authorized representative shall sign-off for “undamaged and complete”
reception. . . .. key project milestone! • Physical installation of the core components in the
server room or agreed designated area. • Integrate the core system with the existing network.
4. Verification Stage: Use solution in production. • Resolve remaining issues (if any). • Evaluate
5. Closure Stage: Final update of system documentation. • Final transfer of the system mainte-
nance to service. • Release the project team from its duties. • Close the project file.

The study results showed that PACS has a positive impact on its users. In addition, it
showed a significant relationship between the number of user characteristics and five inter-related
variables, i.e., external communication, service outcomes, personal intentions, personal hassles, and
increased blame.
