The fuel injection pump on a Caterpillar 320D2 excavator failed after 8,576 hours of operation. The customer complained of starting problems and the engine not being able to take a load. An inspection found the fuel injection pump was not working properly and not delivering fuel properly. The fuel injection pump was replaced, the engine was timed, and fuel lines were bled of air. The excavator was then tested under a full load for two hours with all parameters reading normally. Replacing the failed fuel injection pump resolved the starting and load issues.

Customer Complaint

 Engine starting problem and engine does not take load.

Observation and Analysis: - (Detail description)

 As per customer complain, attended the machine. Which was breakdown condition at site.
 After inspection of machine, we had found engine was not able to take load & engine rpm
was also suddenly decreasing when operate the machine.
 Checked fuel lines (Tank to Fuel Injection Pump) found ok.
 Checked shut off solenoid found ok.
 Checked electronic fuel priming pressure, 24 PSI found.
 Removed high pressure lines and Checked fuel injection pump which was not working
properly. No properly fuel delivery found from fuel injection pump.

Suggestion to avoid the failure

Recommendation/Action taken: -

 Removed attachment from front side of engine.


 Removed fuel lines, harness of solenoid of fuel pump.
 Removed water pump and front housing cover from engine and timing was set, using
caterpillar timing tools.
 Removed FIP gear and replaced fuel injection pump with new one.
 Installed gear, front cover gasket, water pump and all attachment of front side of engine.
 Unlock FIP and bleed the air from fuel lines.
 Crank and started the engine, operated at full load for 2 hours, all parameters found normal.
