ELS Performance Task 3

The document describes a science task that requires the student to: 1) Collect 3 rocks outside and observe their physical characteristics such as color, shape, and texture. 2) Take close-up photos of the rocks and record their observations in a table. 3) Complete a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the four classifications of igneous rocks: ultramafic, mafic, intermediate, and felsic.

Module 9: Igneous Rocks: How Are They Formed?

. ES Performance task 3

Task 3.1 Apply It!

Directions:
1. Go outside your house and collect 3 pieces of rock.
2. Observe the appearance base from their color, shape, texture and other physical characteristics.
3. Take a close-up photo of the rock you have selected and post the picture on the table provided.
4. You may crack or scratch the rock to observe them clearly.
5. Record the data from your observation in the table below.

Rocks (Insert picture below) Type of Igneous Rock and its Characteristic

1.
Characteristics: This rock originally
appeared in a brownish color, when
scratched, it revealed a light shade of
grey underneath. It is a big,
rectangular shaped rock, with a flat
surface.

Type of rock: Felsic Igneous rock.

2. Characteristics: This rock is a bit

lumpy in shape, smooth to the touch
on the top though the bottom feels
slightly rough. The medium gray color
did not change after being scratched.

Type of rock: Mafic Igneous rock

3. Characteristics: This rock comes in a
somewhat oblong shape, and has a
smooth texture. The color stayed as a
dark shade of grey even after being
scratched.

Type of rock: Ultramafic Igneous rock.

Task 3.2 Venn Diagram

Directions: Compare and contrast the four classifications of igneous rocks based on composition.

Ultramafic

• Black to olive green in color

• Density is very high
• Rich in olivine and pyroxene minerals

• Both contrasted • Before both forms

Felsic
with mafic rocks, become igneous rocks,
which are relatively it’s magma has low
rich in magnesium viscosity
• Light in color and iron
Mafic
• Felsic rocks have low
• All are categories of
density classification of rock’s • Dark in color
• Are composed of mineral composition • Have high density
quartz and alkali • Are composed of
feldspar pyroxene, and calcium-
• Both have alkali • Both have olivine rich plagioclase
feldspar and quartz in and pyroxene in their
feldspar.
their compositions compositions.

• Lighter than mafic but darker than felsic

• Density is intermediate
• Composed of biotite, alkali feldspar and
quartz
