ABSTRACT
The mixed-method study, “An Improvised Handheld Vacuum as a Tool for Cleaning

System Unit Components: An Explanatory Sequential Study” conducted focused on the 29th

batch computer laboratory users’ level of satisfaction towards the innovation, factors affecting

their satisfaction, and the implication of the identified factors to their frequency of cleaning.

Moreover, the study underwent two essential phases. The first stage of the research was the

quantitative phase wherein a survey was conducted. The survey did focus on the level of

satisfaction of the 29th batch computer laboratory users about the innovated handheld vacuum

cleaner. In the said phase, the following question was raised: What is the level of satisfaction of

the computer laboratory users in terms of design and materials used in the innovated vacuum

cleaner? Upon asking the respondents’ answers on the researchers’ self-constructed survey

questionnaires via google forms, it was found out that all of the respondents were satisfied with

the design of the innovation supported with its mean score of 23.83 which falls in the satisfactory

range. Moreover, the majority of the respondents were satisfied with the materials used on the

said innovation, and few of the said population were fairly satisfied supported by its mean score

of 19.26 which still falls in the satisfactory range. The study was conducted at the Sisters of

Mary School-Boystown with the 103 respondents taken out from 138 population which was the

29th batch of computer laboratory users. The data were treated using the mean and standard

deviation with the aid of the statistical tool namely, the frequency table. In completion of the

study, 10 purposively selected participants from the raws of respondents were interrogated using

interview questions for the qualitative phase. With careful analysis and simplification of

participants' diverse ideas, the following findings were obtained anchored from the research

objective, factors affecting their satisfaction, and implication of the obtained factors to their

frequency of cleaning. To make all the factors known, innovation’s aesthetic factors,
innovation’s compatibility factors, and the innovation’s usability factors are the ones that affect

the respondents' level of satisfaction towards the innovated handheld vacuum cleaner in terms of

design. On the other hand, materials affordability factors, materials quality factors, materials

availability factors, and materials convenience factors are the great triggering factors for the

respondents’ level of satisfaction with the innovated handheld vacuum cleaner in terms of

material used. In fulfillment of the third objective, affected cleaning tools preference, safer

cleaning process, convenient cleaning process, and motivated cleaning activity are the things that

the respondents gain as they are satisfied with the innovated handheld vacuum cleaner affected

by the said factors. As an overall interpretation, the findings suggest that the innovation was

appealing and durable, thus recommendable for the environment where it was proposed. With a

due recommendation for the overall findings of the study, using carefully and properly the said

innovation will help the community and its beneficiaries.

CHAPTER 1: THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

I. INTRODUCTION:

Cleaning and putting everything in order is one of the very significant responsibilities

that each of the individuals needs to be always considered in their daily living. Defining the word

cleaning, Merriam Webster defined it as an act of removing contaminants or dirt such as soil,

food, and many more. Having some knowledge about cleaning, it will be realized that cleaning

indeed promotes harmony and peace in each of the individuals resting or working environment. `

Furthermore, cleaning a certain place or maybe a particular thing is complicated once the
intervention of cleaning devices such as vacuum cleaners will not be adapted. Considering the

modern setup of the world, it is very hard to work relying only upon one’s strength without a

device to assist at once work. Aside from that information, the world depends on the

technologies brought by modernization. Provided of all those things, regular cleaning

accompanied by the regular use of a cleaning device needs great attention.

In the Philippines, regular cleaning and disinfection were strengthened after the rise of

the pandemic. Along with the cleaning activity of the Filipinos is the use of cleaning devices

which makes the cleaning faster and better. It has been reported that there are still some Filipinos

who order vacuum cleaners, one of the types of cleaning devices, despite trying times to

maintain the cleanliness of the surroundings (Vacuum cleaners, 2020). Provided by this fact,

using cleaning devices is truly efficient and better to be adapted for the good purpose of

sustaining cleanliness.

In particular, the Sisters of Mary School-Boystown, Cebu value intensely the regular

cleaning of all the facilities and things inside the institution. One of the main scopes of the

students' primary duties, namely work is to clean. This shows how cleanliness inspires the

totality of the institution. However, among plenty of concerns regarding cleanliness inside the

school, cleanliness of the computer units of every shop and facility was given less attention.

Given the fact that tolerating this concern regarding cleanliness might bring another problem to

the community, the researchers innovated a handheld vacuum cleaner to address this concern.

Through this, the computer units are less exposed to dirt especially if a regular basis of cleaning

is followed.

Moreover, this research aims to find out the computer laboratory's users' satisfaction

regarding the design and materials used in the innovation, factors that affect the satisfaction of
the respondents towards the innovation’s design and materials, and also the possible impacts of

such factors to the respondents’ frequency of cleaning. In specific, the computer laboratory users

as of the school year 2020-2021 from the 29th batch were taken to be the respondents and

participants of the study. Whenever the result shows a good outcome, it may open more admiring

and desiring opportunities such as the testing of the innovation’s efficiency after the current

study.

II. THEORETICAL AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK:

Gilboa’s Theory of Cleaning: Impact of Servicescapes Cleanliness:

The main contribution of this work is the suggestion and validation of the idea that the

cleanliness of the servicescape has a significant impact on customer’s reopener in a variety of

service contexts, and it can prevent service failures as well as support recovery. In connection

with this theory to the current study, cleaning devices contribute a great role in the cleanliness of

the servicescape. The level of servicescape’s satisfaction towards the device used in the cleaning

process affects the servicescape’s frequency of cleaning. Moreover, feelings of pleasantness,

customer’s trust, and attributed prestige are the main privileges that depend on the cleanliness of

the servicescape. After having those privileges, making cleanliness a custom will follow.

Provided of this fact, the level of satisfaction towards the cleaning device, factors affecting

respondents' satisfaction, and the impact of such factors on the respondent’s frequency of

cleaning, highly needs consideration.

III. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

The research focuses on the 29th Batch computer laboratory users’ level of satisfaction

with the innovative handheld vacuum cleaner and the factors that affect the satisfaction of the

users, as well as the impact of such factors on their frequency of cleaning. Moreover, the

following concerns are raised and these are

1. What is the respondents’ level of satisfaction towards the Innovated Handheld Vacuum

cleaner in terms of:

● Design?

● Materials used?

2. What are the factors that affect the respondents’ level of satisfaction regarding the innovated

Handheld Vacuum Cleaner in terms of:

● Design?

● Materials used?

3. What can these factors do to the respondents’ frequency of cleaning?

IV. RESEARCH HYPOTHESES AND ASSUMPTIONS:

In conducting this study, there are no hypotheses anchored because the quantitative phase

is univariate. Furthermore, the study assumed that there are factors that affect the user’s level of

satisfaction, as well as these factors, have their impact on the user’s frequency of cleaning. In

addition, the innovation’s physical appeal and user’s standards are assumed to be one of the

factors affecting the respondent’s satisfaction in terms of design and materials used. The thought

assumed suggests the researcher’s desire for better feedback coming from the respondents

through the new findings expected to follow as the study goes on.
V. SCOPE AND DELIMITATION:

The study was conducted at the Sisters of Mary School-Boystown, Tungkop, Minglanilla,

Cebu to identify the student’s level of satisfaction regarding the materials used and their design.

In addition, the level of satisfaction regarding the design and materials of the users that was

obtained on phase 1 will be explained later which now opens the shifting of identifying the

factors that affect users’ level of satisfaction. Afterward, the third objective of the study will

arise which is the identification of the identified factors towards the frequency of cleaning the

users will resolve. The research lasted for four months, including the research paper furnishing as

well as the prototype making. Tackling about the content of the study, the respondents and

participants were firmly taken from the population of the study, no other than the 29th batch

computer laboratory users from the said research locale. In terms also of the particular objective

of the study, two areas are the chosen scope of the study and these are the design and materials

used in the innovation. Under the criterion of innovation’s design, logical positioning of the

innovation’s components, organization of wirings or connection, and the holistic structure of the

cleaning device will be distinguished. Under the criterion of materials used, community

availability, eco-friendly materials, and durability will be distinguished. The innovation will only

absorb the fine-grained dust particles from the computer. The reason for this is the assurance that

the innovation will last longer and be more efficient. For the area to be scrutinized by this

innovation, it only limits to the computer units with the same design available inside the school.

Considering the model of other computer units used by the other institutions, few of them are

using hydro-cooling systems for their system units. Such components are to be cleaned by the

innovation proposed. This fact then suggests that other models of computer units used by other

institutions except for those computer units that have similar models the school was using do not
scope to be clean by this innovation. For the total procedure of the study, researchers do not

focus so much on the innovation’s efficiency considering that the innovation created is just a

miniature, a device that will not give accurate effectiveness compared to the real one. The study

purely chooses the innovation’s design and materials used as an independent variable for it is the

variable that affects the dependent variable, typically, the student’s satisfaction level towards the

innovation.

VI. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

The researchers developed a handheld vacuum cleaner to assist and maintain the

cleanliness of computer units in every workshop, particularly in removing unpleasant particles in

the units such as dust particles in small spaces and holes. Furthermore, the following are

beneficiaries of this innovation:

● Administrators

Whenever the research will show that the innovation has cheaper materials and better

costing with better design, they may impose the usage of this innovation which makes the

cleaning process of the computer units easier and faster. Provided that the innovation has a better

design, cheaper materials, and is expensive, the financial savings of the community under the

care of the administrators will be guaranteed.

● Students

They are the main cleaning force at the Sisters of Mary School. When the research shows

that the newly developed handheld vacuum cleaner is less expensive to manufacture and has a

better design, the administrators will provide them with a cleaning device that will make their

cleaning tasks easier and faster. This innovation probably can be endorsed.
VII. DEFINITION OF TERMS:

❏ Cleanliness- this pertains to the quality or state of being clean and in order.

❏ Dust- this pertains to the fine particles of matter which disintegrate something.

❏ Innovation-this refers to a new idea, method, or device which is observed in the research

procedure.

CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, related studies are presented in support of the proposed innovation and to

explain variables involved, studies which concern the vacuum cleaner, workplace hygiene,

psychology of cleanliness on the productivity of the employee, servicescape and customer

satisfaction, and servicescape cleanliness and customer reaction are examined.

Vacuum cleaner. In this modern era, high technology paves the way to make human

living easier. Cleaning nowadays is less hassle with the aid of different technological devices

such as vacuum cleaners. Vacuum cleaners made it easier for us to clean the house and other

spaces (Asafa, Afonja, Olaniyan & Alade, 2018). To achieve or improve noise control Prezelj, J.,

& Novaković, T. (2018) discovered and found out that the vacuum must have a centrifugal fan

with an inclined blade for the vacuum cleaner motor. This information emphasizes how the

design and materials used in the device affect the totality of the device itself.

Workplace hygiene. In the cost study, the innovation invented must consider an

environment to be clean and this factor has something to do with the design and materials used in

making the innovation. This means that the design and materials of the innovation must be fitted

to the environment that is to be used.

Psychology of cleanliness. The study found that the degree of cleanliness and hygiene in

a building has a huge impact on the human mindset (Gavan, 2016). The findings on this

information relate while respondents adopt to the user's level of satisfaction towards the device

used at the specific task that a person is doing.

Impact of cleanliness on the productivity of employees. In this study, it has been

discovered that a higher level of objective cleanliness is associated with a higher level of

productivity among employees. This also means that the more a person is into cleanliness the

higher the probability that he/she can attain a better work performance. The findings of this

information relate to the satisfaction level of the employees towards the cleanliness which is

accompanied by the cleaning devices. This means that employees gain benefits from his or her

satisfaction with the cleaning device knowing that it affects his or her frequency of cleaning (Lee

& Kim, 2019).

Effects of servicescape on customer satisfaction. The findings of this study support the

notion that comfort has a positive impact on service quality and satisfaction. This means that

satisfaction towards the device needs consideration.

Effects of servicescape cleanliness on customer satisfaction and reaction. It has been

found out that the cleanliness of servicescape has a significant effect on customer responses in a

variety of service situations (Vilnai-Yavetz & Gilboa, 2010). Having an attractive servicescape

would not always indicate that one would be comforted (Lee & Kim, 2018)

2.1 VACUUM CLEANER

The traditional use of the soft broom and stick broom helped us clean our surroundings

but, if we want to clean our computer units there would be a big probability that the computer

unit might be destroyed because there are small and vital parts on the inside of the computer unit

that would be touch and get destroyed to avoid these happenings, we should use a piece of safer

equipment and that is the vacuum cleaner. Vacuum cleaners have made cleaning easier and safer

(Asafa, Afonja, Olaniyan, & Alade, 2018).

2.2 WORKPLACE HYGIENE

Workplace hygiene is critical because it leads to a safe workplace (Employsure, 2020). An

unhygienic workplace is not expected to give a more productive worker. A happy and efficient

workforce is the ideal type that would yield a better result. Cleaning the workplace provides

safety not only to the equipment used but also to the workers working in the workplace.

2.3 CLEANLINESS PSYCHOLOGY

Cleaning the system unit and workplace provides not only a healthy body but also a

healthy mindset. When one is indulged in a well-organized and cleaned workplace there would

be less stress. A messy neglected environment will raise stress levels, negatively affecting focus

and engagement (Gavan, 2016). The human mind reacts accordingly to every stimulation from

the (5) five senses when it senses that the area is not hygienic it will react and tell your body to

get rid of it making one stressed out.

2.4 IMPACT OF CLEANLINESS ON THE PRODUCTIVITY OF EMPLOYEES

A clean work environment is essential for a worker to have more productive work.

Without the presence of the hazards that might endanger the life and work of an employee, it is

more likely to happen that less danger and more safety is experienced thus making the job more

fruitful, with fewer worries. Higher target cleanliness correlates significantly with the higher

efficiency of workers (Horrevorts, Van Ophem & Terpstra, 2018). Same with the school

laboratories, cleanliness plays a big part. It is not just for attractiveness since there is no solid

support to the notion that there is a relationship between attractiveness and service quality (Lee

& Kim, 2018). Having a clean workplace enables workers to work with safety and ease.

2.5 EFFECTS OF SERVICESCAPE CLEANLINESS ON CUSTOMER SATISFACTION

AND REACTION.

If one manages to have a clean workplace it would give comfort to the one using it.

Having an attractive servicescape could not ensure comfort (Lee & Kim, 2018). Humans have

this need for comfort and that comfort might not only be found in other people it might be found

in the places where we feel we are safe and sound. When one is exposed to a messy environment,

reactions may differ. The behavior is affected by the environment he/she is in. An organized
working area gives more satisfaction on the part of customers and less aggressive reactions may

be expected from some service failure (Vilnai-Yavetz & Gilboa, 2010). In a school setting, in a

shop, for example, one can expect that there would be little failures in doing activities because

things are being organized and cleaned well there would be less insecurity and more chances for

a happy and safe working attitude amongst students. has been concluded in the study that a

happy and efficient workforce is in good health (Employsure, 2020).

2.6 SYNTHESIS

In a nutshell, a vacuum cleaner makes our cleaning activities easier and safer than before

considering that what we are cleaning has delicate parts like the system unit and inside it.

Imparting cleanliness on the servicescape not only puts into safety the equipment used but also

puts ourselves into a healthy and safe state. We can learn the importance of cleaning not only for

our body but for our mindset also. It has been supported by the studies given above that indeed

one must indulge in cleanliness for a more efficient job, a clear mindset, safety, productivity, and

ease of life to be comforted. Thus, the students will be aided in proper cleaning of their system

units. The administrators would have fewer worries in terms of the students cleaning the said

system units. Therefore rendering a great help to the community, itself.

CHAPTER 3: RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

I. RESEARCH DESIGN:

This research study is held at the Sisters of Mary School - Boystown, Inc. Tungkop,

Minglanilla, Cebu in the A.Y. 2020-2021. This research study is a mixed-method approach

specifically, a sequential explanatory design. Furthermore, the researchers only utilize sequential

explanatory mixed-method as their specific research design because the research only aims to

explain the 29th batch computer laboratory users' level of satisfaction regarding the innovated
handheld vacuum cleaner through identification of factors that affects their satisfaction as well as

the possible impact of their satisfaction and such factors to the respondent’s frequency of

cleaning, which will become possible by the qualitative findings of phase 2 prepared by the

researchers. In addition, the review of the researchers from the other design was more suited. In

support, in the sequential explanatory design, the data are collected over a period of time in two

consecutive phases. Thus, a researcher first collects and analyzes the quantitative data.

Qualitative data are collected in the second phase of the study and are related to the outcomes

from the first, quantitative phase.

II. POPULATION AND SAMPLING:

The researchers used probability sampling, in specific stratified random sampling for the

quantitative phase. This technique works by dividing the population into subgroups called strata

in which each group is homogenous and from that subgroup, there will be a representative from

each to be the respondents of the study. This assures more specific results aside from the fact that

it gives equal chance to everyone, but because each stratum may have a different perspective

which can contribute a different result.

Furthermore, the qualitative phase of the study utilizes purposive sampling where the

participants will be taken from the quantitative respondents, in which in this phase researchers

goal is to explain further the quantitative findings through a qualitative study. This sampling

technique works by considering the main purpose of the researchers for the findings of the study.

III. RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY:

The research work involves 103 respondents taken from two different sessions with three

different majors for the quantitative phase. All the respondents are 29th batch computer

laboratory users because they can fill the data with the necessary information which is the level
of satisfaction and other two objectives regarding the design and materials of the innovation.

Moreover, respondents of the study was taken with due consideration of their guardian which is

their mother-sisters and their voluntary participation was considered as well.

IV. PARTICIPANTS OF THE STUDY:

In fulfillment of qualitative phase on the said mixed method study, 10 participants are

taken purposively from the raws of respondents that were utilized during quantitative phase.

Still, all of the respondents are 29th batch computer laboratory users for they have the capacity

to explain the reason behind respondent’s level of satisfaction aligned to the objective as well as

they are knowledgeable enough too to enumerate some of the possible impact of their

satisfaction towards their frequency of cleaning.

V. RESEARCH INSTRUMENT:

A self-created survey questionnaire is utilized as the research tool in this first phase of the

study. Its goal is to determine the level of satisfaction with the suggested innovative vacuum

cleaner among the 29th batch computer laboratory users. In continuation of the study, the

researchers will use an interview questionnaire to achieve the objective set in the second phase.

Furthermore, close-ended questions are the queries that can be expected in the first phase, while

open-ended questions rest assured in the second phase.

VI. VALIDATION OF INSTRUMENT:

The self-constructed structured survey questionnaire and interview questionnaires are

forwarded to the research adviser for further revisions, improvement, and comments. In line with

that, the researchers have finalized the instrument by the research adviser’s corrections.

After the validation of the questionnaire, a test-retest was tried on chosen individuals for

the firm validity of the instruments, and afterward, the 103 students will then answer digitally the
digital questionnaire survey for some time quantitative phase, and 10 chosen participants

likewise for the qualitative phase of the study.

VII. DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE:

In the stage of this chapter, the researchers applied the different sequences for the data

collection. The researchers made it possible to comprehend and analyze the data through several

steps that should be followed. Hence, making the data safe, secure, and unbiased.

Moreover, the following were the steps followed by the researchers:

FOR THE QUANTITATIVE PHASE:

Phase 1: Then, the researchers made excuse letters for the respondents and for their respective

guardians to allow the data collection to happen. After the excuse letters, the researchers excused

all the respondents of the study.

Phase 2: After, the researchers guided the respondents to the venue for the data collection. The

respondents were briefed about the background of the study and the need for their answers.

Moreover, the researchers instructed the respondents on how to answer the following forms.

Phase 3: After answering the formulated survey, the researchers gathered the data and inputted

it into different spreadsheets to make sure that the data was safe and secured.

Phase 4: Finally, the researchers analyzed and interpreted the results developing concrete

conclusions based on the respondents’ answers.

FOR THE QUALITATIVE PHASE:

Phase 1: Then, the researchers made excuse letters for the participants and for their respective

guardians to allow the data collection to happen. After the excuse letters, the researchers excused

all the participants of the study.

Phase 2: Afterwards, the researchers guided the participants to the venue for the data collection.

The participants were briefed about the background of the study and the need for their answers.

Moreover, the researchers instructed the participants in answering the interview questions.

Phase 3: After answering the interview questions, the researchers' data gathered was analyzed

thematically to make sure that the data was safe and secured.

Phase 4: Finally, the researchers developed concrete conclusions based on the participants’

answers.

VIII. STATISTICAL TREATMENT AND DATA ANALYSIS:

To present and interpret the data gathered properly, the researchers used the mean and

standard deviation in treating the said data. Through the help of the statistical tool known to be

the frequency table, the results were obtained and successfully presented in a bar graph.

For the qualitative data that will be collected, the researchers will use thematic analysis

where codification of the participants’ answers is executed and out of that, themes will be

generated and these then become the findings of the study for the qualitative phase.

IX. ETHICAL CONSIDERATION:

After the study was completed, the researchers double-checked that it adhered to research

ethics, which increased the study's validity. A few of the following ethics were strictly respected

when acquiring data as actual evidence of adhering to research ethics:

● Confidentiality
The researchers made sure that the respondents' personal information was kept

private when collecting the data. General descriptions are utilized to ensure that

confidentiality is protected while also providing an accurate description of the responses.

● Objectivity

The researchers maintained objectivity by relying on the data acquired rather than

the researchers' subjective feelings or intuition after completing data collection and

various phases of this technique.

● Carefulness

Despite the short time constraint allocated to the researchers for data gathering,

they ensured that the data was not the result of hasty effort and was treated with care.

CHAPTER 4: PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA
