V. Learning Synchronous:
Activities Activity 1- The teacher will tell students to fill in the missing letters of each word. Then, they will let them use the given
meanings as clues. Afterwards, they will use each word in a sentence based on how it was defined (refer to EnglishTek 9
Worktext, p. 2).
2. The teacher will also tell the students to answer the knowledge activation activities on EnglishTek 9 Worktext, pp. 3-4.
3. Then, the teacher will ask the following:
• What words or things do you associate with bookstores?
• Do you still find reading books an expensive recreation?
Activity 2- . The teacher will ask students to read the selection, Books vs. Cigarettes, by George Orwell. Marginal questions on
the selection will be answered orally. As they read, they will answer the worksheet on EnglishTek 9 Anthology, p. 151.
Activity 3- The teacher will tell the students that the reasons for writing are varied; and the reason why an author writes
something is called the author’s purpose. The teacher will tell them that recognizing the author’s purpose for writing allows
them to examine a text deeper (refer to EnglishTek 9 Worktext, p. 7).

Asynchronous : Have students call out different types of pie (e.g. pumpkin or apple). Ask them to each choose a type of pie, and
let them know that they'll be writing about this pie for the different author's purposes.
Hand out blank pieces of paper. Have students fold the paper into three equal columns and label the columns with a P, I, and E.
In the P column, students will write to persuade their audience that their pie is the best (or worst) type of pie.
In the I column, students will write to inform their audience about their pie.
In the E column, students will write an entertaining story that includes their pie.
Ask students to write at least one paragraph for each purpose. They will submit their work in google classroom.

VI. Assessment Create an infographic about the text, Books vs Cigarettes.
