1 - Introduction To Photography

Forensic photography is the application of photography techniques to criminal investigations and law. It involves accurately documenting crime scenes and evidence through photographs. Forensic photography preserves details like location, time, and events for future analysis and legal proceedings. It allows investigators to capture details that may not be visible to the naked eye. Photographs provide a permanent record of crime scenes and evidence. Different photography techniques like infrared, ultraviolet, and macro photography can reveal further details. Forensic photography is an important tool in criminal investigations and prosecutions.

Forensic Photography

Forensic 1
PHOTOGRAPHY
 It is the process or art of producing images of objects on
sensitized surfaces by the chemical action of light.
 It was derived from the Greek words photos ("light") and
graphein ("to draw")
 The word was first used by the scientist Sir John F.W. Herschel
in 1839.
 It is a method of recording images by the action of light, or
related radiation, on a sensitive material.
PHOTOGRAPH
 It is an image created by light falling on a light-sensitive surface
usually photographic film or electronic imager.
POLICE PHOTOGRAPHY
 It is an art or science which deals with the study of the
principles of photography, the preparation of photographic
evidence and its application to police work.
 It is the study of the general practices, methods, and steps in
taking pictures of the crime scene, physical things, and other
circumstances that can be used as criminal evidences or for
law enforcement purposes.
FORENSIC
 It is derived from the word forum- which means place for legal
debate.
FORENSIC PHOTOGRAPHY
 It is that field covering the legal application of photography in
criminal jurisprudence and criminal investigation. It is that branch of
forensic science dealing with the study of the fundamental but
realistic principles/concepts of photography; application of
photography in law enforcement; and Preparation of photographic
evidence needed by prosecutors and courts of law.
 It is the art of producing an accurate reproduction of a crime scene
or an accident using photograph for the benefit of a court or to aid
in an investigation.
 It is sometimes referred to as police photography, forensic imaging
or crime scene photography.
Importance of Photography
1. A photograph is capable of catching and preserving

A. SPACE-The “where” of the crime (locus criminis)

B. TIME-The “when” of the crime
C. EVENT- The “what” of the crime
 Photographs allow the police investigators to understand the
elements of the crime clarifying and revealing what is not
readily seen by the naked eye and understood upon the
discovery of the crime.
 Photography is a great help in preserving the visual appearance
of the crime scene. A photograph provides a permanent
record of the facts of the crime scene. It records facts for
future references that are needed in crime scene
reconstruction and the logical analysis of the crime.
Special Uses of Photography
 INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY
 ULTRAVIOLET PHOTOGRAPHY
 PHOTOMICROGRAPHY
 PHOTOMACROGRAPHY
 MICROPHOTOGRAPHY
 MUG SHOT PHOTOGRAPHY
 XRAY PHOTOGRAPHY
INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY
 It is the recording of images formed by infrared radiation.
ULTRAVIOLET PHOTOGRAPHY
 This is the art or process of photographing or recording
unseen object by means of ultraviolet light.
PHOTOMICROGRAPHY
 It combines a camera with microscope. Pictures can then be
taken of things too small to be seen with naked eye.
 A photograph taken through a microscope is called
photomicrograph. It is the practice of photographing very small
objects in order that they may be seen in comfort.
 This is the taking of a magnified photograph of small object
through attaching a camera to the ocular of a compound
microscope.
PHOTOMACROGRAPHY
 This is the taking of a magnified (enlarged) photograph of small
object by attaching an extended tube lens (macro lens) to the
camera.
MICROPHOTOGRAPHY
 This is the production of photographs in which the image of an
object is reproduced much smaller than it actually is.
MUG SHOT PHOTOGRAPHY
 It is usually used for personal identification which is the first
used of photography in police work.
XRAY PHOTOGRAPHY
 It is widely use in medicine, industry, and science. It is quite
different from ordinary photography. X rays are invisible
electromagnetic waves. They behave much like visible light. But
they can pass through things such as wood, cardboard, and
flesh, which light cannot penetrate.
Elements in Photography
 Light or electromagnetic radiation, the source of it may either
be natural or artificial light.
 Camera - a light tight box which maybe of different type, size
and use.
 Sensitized materials - materials which are sensitive to light
such as the films and photographic paper.
Elements in Photography
 Chemical process – This is a process in photography which
involves use of chemicals to develop and fix latent prints on
the film and to develop and fix images onto photographic
paper. The process also involves time, temperature,
concentration of solutions and degree of agitation
 Subject or object - This refers to animate and inanimate things-
persons or materials which shall be the subject or object of
photography.
Principle in Photography
In photography, the light writes when it strikes minute
crystals of light sensitive surfaces (films and photographic
papers), a mechanical device (camera) and chemical processing
(film development and printing). As a process, photography is the
method of using light to produce identical image of an object
that can be preserved permanently by employing:
 camera: camera use to regulate, absorb and filter light
 film and any sensitized material to record light
Photograph is a mechanical result of photography. To
produce a photograph, light is needed aside from sensitized
material (films and photographic papers). Light radiated or
reflected by the subject must reach the sensitized material while
all other lights must be excluded. The exclusion of all other lights
is achieved by placing the sensitized material inside a light tight
box.The light maybe visible or invisible.
The effect of light on the sensitized material is not visible
in the formation of images of objects. The effect could be made
visible with the aid of chemical processing of the exposed
sensitized material called development. Photography is the
production of visible images by using the action of light on a
sensitized material
