Facebook collects significant personal data from its billions of users. It previously allowed third-party applications broad access to user data without sufficient privacy protections, which enabled the Cambridge Analytica scandal. In response, Facebook implemented new data privacy policies and restrictions, but critics argue it did not go far enough and needs stronger regulation. Options discussed for improving privacy include independent oversight boards and increased government regulation, but meaningful reforms have yet to be seen. After making changes in 2018 around users, shareholders, governance, and regulation, Facebook saw increased user growth and engagement across its platforms.

This case talks about Facebook and how it handles users’ data.
Initially started as a dating
social networking website back in 2004 for Harvard students, it currently had billions of users across the globe. Facebook along with its other companies, WhatsApp and Instagram and Google has a duopoly in the internet services sector. Facebook has access to a lot of private information from its users and Facebook till 2012 had open APIs where applications could access the data and provide targeted ads or share targeted information to them. This was used by Cambridge Analytica when it tired to influence the 2016 US elections. Later when this was found out by the media, Facebook came up with multiple plans to protect users’ data and prevent such leaks and manipulation in the future. Even then there was not much change and there was no much provision in the law to prosecute them as well as most of the services provided by them were free. Many companies, privacy advocate came against Facebook data privacy issues but did not see much effect. Even some of Facebook’s own employees came out against Facebooks data privacy. Facebook later confirmed that they had made it clear how the information would be shared but still users did not feel comfortable in the statement as their privacy policy was lengthy difficult to comprehend and involved a lot of legal terms and it was not exactly clear as to who did Facebook share these data with. Three where discussions around how proper privacy could be implemented, and many options like independent review boards, more regulations etc were discussed. Finally, now as the new generation of billions of users are embracing Facebook again one needs to wait and see how CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sandberg manage the opportunities and challenges before them. The Case B talks about the significant changes that Facebook implanted after summer 2018, in the following fields - Users, Shareholders, Governance, Regulatory/legislative changes, initiatives, Societal perspectives. After this changes the user growth is seeing a tremendous increase and its monthly and daily average user grew 8%. The total engagements across all applications increased as well. Facebook along with WhatsApp and Instagram now constitutes to around 2.7 B users globally and is growing at a rapid pace.
