Activity (Clutch Assembly)

The document describes the major components of a clutch assembly and their functions. It includes: 1. The flywheel, clutch disc, diaphragm spring, clutch release fork, cushion plate, disc plate, and hub. 2. How the hydraulic clutch system works using components like the master cylinder, release cylinder, and clutch pedal to actuate the clutch when the pedal is pressed. 3. The importance of "free play" in the clutch pedal and proper pedal height to allow the clutch to fully disengage and prevent slippage.

TECHNICAL OPERATION: (5 points each)

1. Based on the illustration above, make a process flow on “How hydraulic clutch
system works?” including how these components works together achieving the
purpose of clutch in vehicle.
There are major components hydraulic system such as Master cylinder, Release
cylinder and Clutch pedal.

2. Differentiate the manual and hydraulic clutch assembly and what are the
limitations of each types.
- Both are differs on the applications performance/driving reliability and repair.
Mechanical clutches have a cable for actuation, and typically need adjusting
throughout the life of the clutch. Hydraulically actuated clutches tend to be self-
adjusting, as long as there is enough fluid in the reservoir. However, this does
mean that hydraulic clutches can be susceptible to air bubbles in the lines, and
water in the system which can lead to premature rusting. Consider silicone fluids
for clutch applications to reduce water problems.
3. In a clutch assembly, what is the importance of “FREE PLAY” and the clutch
pedal height?
- Pedal free play is a necessary part of the design. The clutch system is
designed to allow just a little bit of pedal free play to ensure that the rod of the
master cylinder is released all the way when your foot is off the pedal, even
when parts are hot and expanded fully, therefore needing more space. In
order to work efficiently, the clutch needs the right amount of play in the
linkage between the foot pedal and the clutch operating lever (also known as
the release arm or fork). Anything less than the correct amount of free play
(or clearance) will result in clutch slip, because the pressure plate will be
unable to exert its full pressure on the friction plate.

4. What are the servicing procedures in dealing with clutch assembly?

 Before removing the clutch, inspect the release system.
 Inspect the release system (wear,
 Free movement and adjustments.
 Verify correct parts are used and properly installed.
 Check release system and hydraulics.
5. Describe the purpose and function of the pilot bearing in the clutch assembly.
- The main purpose of the pilot bearing is to provide a low-friction support for
the end of the transmission's input shaft. Pilot bearings are either bearings or
bushings. The bearing type can be ball, roller or needle bearings packed in
grease. The pilot bearing/bushing allows the flywheel to maintain engine RPM
while the input shaft is slowing down and stopping. It mounts either in the
center of the center of the flywheel or in the rear of crankshaft. Its purpose is
to support the input shaft of the transmission while allowing the shaft to rotate
independently of the crankshaft.

6. What happen when the transmission input shaft is not align to the clutch splines?

- The throw out bearing accurately slides over the input shaft bearing retainer
sleeve. The clutch fork has two curled springs that hold the release bearing
sleeve to the clutch fork. It's imperative that the release bearing that's already
assembled to the fork is centered properly on and over the three fingers of the
clutch pressure plate.
7. When a driver’s footsteps always in the clutch pedal during driving even without
shifting gears, what will be the effect in the clutch assembly?

 When you put your car in neutral at a stop light, you’re lessening the general
wear on your clutch
 There are ways to avoid rolling down a hill without holding the clutch in.
  Your gear shift is not a hand rest.
 Don’t lug the engine. It will cause major problems for you in the long run.
 Resting your foot on the clutch is a bad habit to get into, so try and avoid it as
much as possible.
