Friction IA

This document discusses determining the coefficients of static and kinetic friction between surfaces using an online software. It provides background on friction, describing static and kinetic friction. The experiment will involve using a cord to pull one object by another, measuring tension. The hypothesis is that friction coefficients increase with rougher, dry surfaces and decrease with a lubricant. The independent variable is mass, which will be increased from 100g to 2000g. The dependent variable is tension. Controlled variables are not specified.

Determining the coefficients of static

friction and kinetic friction between

different surfaces by using an online
software
Background information-
Friction is a resistive force, friction can be described as a resistive
force that occurs between two surfaces as they slide over each other.
A force is a push or pull that one body exerts on the other that tends to
start or stop motion. There exists two types of friction, there is static
friction and kinetic friction. Static friction is the frictional force between
the surfaces of two substances when they are not in motion with
respect to each other. While kinetic friction is friction that occurs
between 2 moving surfaces, and a body moving experiences a force
in the opposite direction. The magnitude of the force will depend on
the coefficient of kinetic friction.
The experiment will involve the use of using a chord or wire to find the
coefficients of kinetic and static friction, as one body will be pulling one
other body. Tension can be described as the pulling force transmitted
axially by the means of a string, a cable, chain, or similar object, or by
each end of a rod, rope or other similar object. It can also be
described as the action-reaction pair of forces that act at each end of
elements, tension can similarly defined as the opposite of
compression. When it is said that tension is the pulling force
transmitted “axially”, it means that the force is transmitted via an axis,
such as the x-axis and y-axis.

Hypothesis
Based on past experiences and real life experiences I believe that the
coefficient of kinetic and static friction will increase when there is an
interaction between solid surfaces that are dry, and that have more
rough surfaces. Another hypothesis that I can make is that when there
is a liquid between the surfaces, known as a lubricant, will decrease
the coefficient of kinetic and static friction.

Variables
What is a variable?
A variable is any factor or condition that can be controlled, changed,
or measured in an experiment.

What are the different types of variables that exist?

There are three types of variables that exist and need to be taken into
account when performing various experiments, the first one being the
independent variable. An independent variable is the one condition
that you change in an experiment. The second type of variable that
exists is the dependent variable. A dependent variable is the variable
that you measure or observe. The third type of variable is the
controlled variable, this is the variable that does not change during an
experiment.

Variables present for this specific

experiment
Independent Variable Method of manipulating
Mass For the experiments, the value of
the mass will start at 100g and
will be increased all the way to
2000g for one specific pair of
materials and the same will be
done for a different set of
materials. The mass is measured
in its SI unit, mass where its unit
is g.
Dependant variable Method of manipulating
Tension The tension will change as the
mass of the object increases, this
is why it is labelled as the
dependant variable. The Tension
is a force thus it will be measured
in Newton the SI unit force,
where its unit is N.
