Foundation For Agricultural Machines

The document provides guidance on designing concrete foundations for agricultural machines. It discusses: 1) Calculating the weight and volume of the foundation based on the machine weight and speed using empirical formulas. 2) Computing the depth of the foundation based on the machine dimensions and volume. 3) Determining the soil pressure and ensuring adequate factor of safety against the soil bearing capacity. 4) A sample calculation shows determining the 0.5m depth of a foundation for a 1,100kg diesel engine driving a rice mill.

 Concrete Density, kg/m3
 Weight of the machine, kg
 Maximum machine speed, rpm
Steps in Calculating Size of Concrete
Foundation for Agricultural Machine
 Calculate the weight of the foundation using the
formula

Wf = e We [N] ½

where: Wf - weight of foundation, kg

e - empirical coefficient, 0.11
We - weight of machine, kg
 Compute for the volume of the foundation by
dividing the computed weight with the density of
the the concrete (2,406 kg/m3)

Vf = [ Wf / Dc ]
Where: Vf - volume of foundation, m3
Wf - weight of foundation, kg
Dc - density of concrete, kg/m3
 Compute for the depth of the foundation using
the machine dimension plus the grilling
allowance

Df = Vf / [Lm x Wm]

where: Vf - volume of foundation, m3

Lm - length of machine plus
grilling allowance, m
Wm - width of machine plus grilling
allowance, m
 Calculate for the final volume and weight of the
foundation based on the adjusted value, i.e.
machine base dimension plus grilling allowance

VFf = Wa x La x Df
WFf = Vfa x Dc

Where: VFf - final volume of foundation, m3

WFf - final weight of foundation, kg
Wa - adjusted weight of foundation,
kg
La - adjusted length of foundation,
m3
 Calculate soil pressure exerted at the based of
the foundation.
Sp = [Wm + Wf]/ Af
where:
Sp - soil pressure, kg/m2
Wm - weight of the machine, kg
Wf - weight of foundation, kg
Af - area of foundation, m2
 Compute for the factor of safety using a
safe soil bearing capacity of 12, 225
kg/m2

FS = SBC/Sp

where:
FS - factor of safety
SBC - safe sol bearing capacity, kg/m2
Sp - soil pressure, kg/m2
Sample Calculation

Determine depth of the foundation required to

carry the load of an internal combustion
engine use to drive a 15 sacks per hour multi-
pass rice mill. The engine is a 53 hp Yanmar
diesel at a maximum engine speed of 900
rpm. The total weight of the engine is 1,100
kg. Assume a concrete density of 2,406
kg/m3 and soil bearing capacity of 12,225
kg/m2. Engine dimension plus the grilling
allowance is 1.52 cm wide by 2.13 cm long.
Schematic Drawing

Engine

Foundation
Flooring
Given:
– Engine horsepower – 53 hp
– Maximum engine speed – 900 rpm
– Weight of engine – 1,100 kg
– Engine base frame – 1.52m wide x
2.13 m long
– Concrete density – 2,406 kg/m3
– Soil bearing capacity – 12,225 kg/m2
Required:
Depth of engine foundation
2.13 m
1.52 m

Solution:
0.5 m

Wf = 0.11 (1,100 kg) (900 rpm) ½

= 3.630 kg
Vf = 3,630 kg/ 2,406 kg/m3
= 1.50 m3
Df = 1.50 m3 / (1.52 m x 2.13 m)
= 0.46 m or use 0.50 m
Compute the volume of concrete required for an engine
foundation of a rice mill. The engine is a Mitsubishi 4DR5 with a
gross weight of 650 kg. Engine will be operated at a speed of 2000
rpm. Assume concrete density of 2,406 kg/m3.

Given: Wt of engine - 650 kg

Engine speed - 2000 rpm
Density of Concrete - 2,406 kg/m3
Required: Weight of foundation, and Volume of
concrete foundation

Solution:
Wf =  We [ N ] 0.5
= 0.11 (650 kg) ( 2000 rpm ) 0.5
= 3,197.58 kg
Vf = Wf / dc
= 3,197.58 kg / 2,406 kg/m3
= 1.32 m3
What will be the depth of the concrete foundation above if the engine
will have a base width and length of 1.0 and 1.5 meters, respectively?
Consider an engine base allowance of 10%. If concrete mixture of 1:3:6
will be used for the foundation above, determine the number of bags of
cement, and volume of sand and gravel needed.

Given: V - 1.32 m3
Width of engine base - 1.0 m
Length of engine base - 1.5 m
Engine base allowance - 10%
Concrete mixture - 1:3:6
Required: Depth of foundation, Number of bags
of cement
Solution: Volume of sand and gravel
Df = Vf / [(We x Le) x allowance]
= 1.32 m3/ [(1.0 m x 1.5 m) 1.1]
= 0.72 m
No. of bags = 5.48 x 1.32 = 7.23 bags
Volume of sand = 0.44 x 1.32 = 0.58 m3
Volume of gravel = 0.88 x 1.32 = 1.16 m3

bless!!!
