Flow-control valves, as the name suggests, control the flow rate of a fluid through a
hydraulic circuit
Flow-control valves accurately limit the fluid volume rate from fixed displacement pump to
or from branch circuits.
Their function is to provide velocity control of linear actuators, or speed control of rotary
actuators.
Typical application includes regulating cutting tool speeds, spindle speeds, surface grinder
speeds, and the travel rate of vertically supported loads moved upward and downward by
forklifts, and dump lifts.
Actuator velocity/speed control is achieved by controlling the rate of flow into or out of the
cylinder/motor.
Velocity/Speed control by controlling the rate of flow into the cylinder/motor is called
meterin control.
Speed control by controlling the rate of flow out of the cylinder /motor is called meter-out
control.
Experimental setup:
1. Construct & demonstrate meter in circuit for controlling forward stroke of the
Pneumatic double acting cylinder.
Working:
In the initial position, the control element 1V1 is switched in such a way that the piston rod
side of the cylinder is pressurised and the cylinder is in the retracted state..
Upon operation of the push-button, the valve 1S1 is actuated, so that a signal is generated at
the pilot port 14 of the control element 1V1. The control element 1V1 switches, the piston
side of the cylinder is pressurized and the piston rod advances.
The supply air flows restricted through the one-way flow control valve 1V2, the air displaced
on the piston rod side is unrestricted.
The advancing speed of the piston rod is therefore reduced. The switching status of the valve
1V1 is maintained, if the valve 1S1 is released, since this is a memory valve.
If the valve 1S2 is actuated, a signal is generated at the control port 12 of the control
element. The valve switches, pressure is applied at the piston rod side of the cylinder and the
piston rod retracts.
Exhaust air flow control is unaffected via the one way flow control valve 1V2 as air is
transferred through the by-pass check valve of the flow control valves. If the valve 1S2 is
released, the switching position of the control element 1V1 is maintained due to its memory
function.
The flow control influences the volumetric flow rate of the intake air for forward stroke and
as such the control the forward piston speed.
2. Construct & demonstrate meter out circuit for controlling forward stroke of the
Pneumatic double acting cylinder.

Precautions:
1. Avoid improper/loose connections of components.
2. Do not forcefully connect to connectors to avoid the damage.
Procedure:
1- Prepare the components according to components list.
2 - Mount all components according to Pneumatic circuit.
3- Check all parts are connected properly with each other.
4- Switch on the service unit.
5- Start the circuit.
6- Check the operation of the circuit by actuating push button of 3/2 way valves
7-Troubleshoot the circuit for any malfunction
8- Turn off the service unit
9- Dismantle and tidy up.
Conclusions:
Thus the forward speed of double acting cylinder was being designed using Metering In
and Out circuit and its operation is observed in Pneumatic Trainer Kit.
Student Activity:
i)Draw the Meter In circuit for controlling speed of both forward and return stroke of
Double acting cylinder
ii) Draw the Meter Out circuit for controlling speed of both forward and
return stroke of Double acting cylinder
