What is a Computer?
• A computer is an electronic device that process data,
converting it into information that is useful to people.
• A computer is controlled by the programmed instructions,
which give the machine a purpose and tell what to do.
History
• ABACUS
• Charles Babbage’s attempt to build an automatic
mechanical calculator at Cambridge ,England in 1830.
• By 1930’s punched cards were in wide use in large
businesses, and various type of punched card
machines were available.
• In 1937, Howard Aiken, at Harvard, proposed to IBM that
a machine could be constructed which would automatically
sequence the operations and calculations performed
Characteristics of a Computer
• Speed
• Accuracy
• Diligence
• Versatility
• Storage Capacity
• No I.Q.
• No Feelings
Types Of Computers
• According to Technology
1. Analog Computers
2. Digital Computers
3. Hybrid computers
• According to Purpose
1. General purpose Computers
2. Special Computers
• According to size
1. Supercomputers 2. Mainframe Computers
3. Minicomputers 4. Workstations
5. Microcomputers, or Personal Computers
Technology : Analog Computers
• a computer that operates with numbers represented by directly
measurable quantities (such as voltages or rotations)
Technology : Digital Computers
• These are high speed programmable electronic devices
that perform mathematical calculations, compare values
and store results. They recognize data by counting
discrete signal representing either a high or low
voltage state of electricity.
Technology : Hybrid Computers
• Hybrid computers are computers that exhibit features of
analog computers and digital computers.
Purpose : General purpose Computers
Purpose : Special purpose Computers
Size : Mainframe Computers
• Mainframe Computers are usually slower, less powerful
and less expensive than supercomputers. And Used as
Large Organization Main Servers. Or as Central Computer.
• Mainframe computers are used in
large organizations where many
users need access to shared data
and programs.
Size : Workstations
• Workstations are powerful single-user computers
• Workstations are often used as network and Internet
servers.
Microcomputers, or Personal
Computers
