Ine 455 Introduction To Simulation - Midterm

The document provides instructions for a simulation midterm exam. It includes: 1) Information about bonus points for early submission. 2) A simulation question that models customer arrivals and service times at a restaurant using exponential distributions. Students are asked to simulate the system for the first 5 customers and calculate performance measures including server utilization, average queue length, average wait time. 3) A table of random numbers to use in the simulation and an answer sheet to record responses.

INE 455 INTRODUCTION TO SIMULATION – MIDTERM

Info 1 : Bonus Points Policy
If you upload your word file in the Ubis system earlier, you can have one of following bonus points:
0 - 15 minutes +15p
15-20 minutes +10p
Info 2 : X Last number of your student ID
Info 3 : You can prepare your table for hand simulation with excel or on paper. You can paste your
excel table to the second page (answer sheet is given for you) or paste photo of your calculations to
answer sheet or you can upload photo seperately. It is up to you but you should write your anwers
to the items on answer sheet explicitly and upload Word file for sure.
QUESTIONS
1) Read above informations carefully. Customers arrive to a famous fast food restaurant Car Service at
Bagdat Street with their cars, have their meals and leave the system. Both interarrival times and
service times are exponentially distributed according to following functions.

Interarrival times ~ Exponential ( λ ) Service times ~ Exponential ( μ)

1 1
, if 0 ≤ X ≤2 ,if 0≤ X ≤ 2

{
X +1
λ= 1 ,if 3 ≤ X ≤ 6
X
1
X −1
, if 7 ≤ X ≤9 {
X +2
μ= 1 ,if 3 ≤ X ≤6
X +1
1
X
, if 7 ≤ X ≤ 9

Hint : λ∧μ are rates, not mean values. Simulate the system for first 5 customers and calculate the
following performance measures? Assume first arrival occurs at time 0.0 (T=0) and system is initially
empty. Use random numbers given at Table 1 in 4 digits and construct your table with at least 2 digits.

Table 1. Random numbers (RN) :

a) What is average server utilization? (20p) RN for Interarrival RN for Service
b) What is the average queue length? (20p) times times
c) What is the average time that a customer waits in the 0,4051 0,4563
queue? (20p) 0,6239 0,3058
d) Find the maximum value of number waiting in the 0,5748 0,8823
queue and maximum waiting time in the queue? (20p) 0,0384 0,4084
e) What do you think about utilization value? Is it 0,0687 0,1724
efficient and realistic? (20p)

Good luck!
