day should let Dr. Huang know. It should be easy to accommodate.

Course Description
• Application of physical laws, mathematical skills and computer software to solve engineering
problems.
• Study of heat transfer and its application in the design of specific processes and process
equipment;

Student Learning Outcomes


• Practice mathematical methods for engineering problems.
• Understand the fundamentals of heat transfer by conduction, convection, and radiation.
• Analyze and design heat transfer processes and equipment.
• Formulate and solve quantitatively problems in heat conduction, convection, and radiation
• The similarity and analogy between heat and mass transport.

• (Required, tests will be open book) Bergman – Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer (7th
Edition, Hardcopy, PDF, or E-book.) We will use problems in the book for homework.
So, you need to have access to the 7th edition.

Exam #1: Feb 17th, 5 pm – 6:30 pm, SERC 2013, with overflow to SERC 2014
Exam #2: Mar 17th, 5 pm – 6:30 pm, SERC 2013, with overflow to SERC 2014
Exam #3: Apr 14th, 5 pm – 6:30 pm, SERC 2013, with overflow to SERC 2014
Final exam: Apr 26th, 8:00 am – 10:30 am, NL 2007 (according to UA academic calendar)

Attendance
Attendance will be randomly collected at any point during a class using ResponseWare App.
Students who take class remotely will need to be in a quiet room and follow the entire the
lecture. If you miss the attendance collection, you will be considered as missing the class.

Quiz
Quizzes will be given at the beginning or at the end of the class using ResponseWare App.
Quizzes will be closed book and closed notes. The quizzes are used to test the understanding
and the progress of students.
Students who take class remotely will need to be in a quiet room and follow the entire the
lecture. No make-up for quizzes. I will drop off your quiz if you are pre-approved to be absent.

Assignments
Homework: Home assignments will be given about once a week and will be collected one week
after the assignment. No late homework will not be accepted. I suggest you to complete HW as
soon as you can, so that you can turn it in earlier in case you are sick later or can’t make to the
class. 10 extra points (out of 100) for each homework that are turned in at least 2 Business
days before the due date and that earn at least 80% before the extra points.
Due to COVID, Home assignments will be assigned and collected electronically on blackboard.
Work neatly. Format of homework:
1) A single PDF file.
2) Letter size paper.
3) Write your name on the first page.
4) Scan it and submit as a Single PDF file. If you take multiple photos, combine them into a
single PDF.

It is to TAs’ discretion how many points s/he wants to deduct if the HW is messy and hard to
read.

Caution! No attendance, quiz, or assignments will be collected in the first week of semester. But
everything will start from the second week of the semester. Students who registered the class

after the first week for any reasons will also be responsible for the missing ones. Please take
this into account when deciding to register the course after the first week. (this phrase is added
on 01/19/2021)

Exams

All exams are in-person. But if you fall into one of the following situations, you will be allowed
to take exams remotely. (These situations also apply to taking lecture remotely.) However, the
remote exam will be different from the one that other students take in-person. The time for
remote exam will have be discussed and agreed upon with Dr. Huang. In addition, students to
take exams remotely have to agree to have audio, video and maybe additional equipment to
allow the proctoring. Students who will need to take exams remotely need to notify Dr. Huang
and an agreement needs to be reached at least one week before the exam date.
(1) You are in a country where the boarder has been closed with no flights to US.
(2) You have a doctor's note saying you can't or should not participate activities in person.
(3) You have a proof that you are under quarantine for the date when the exam is taken.
(4) Any other special / emergency situations, which you will need to discuss with Dr. Huang.
Cautions! I don’t always treat cascading errors differently from a regular error in exams! This
is particularly true for mistakes for simple concepts.
Cautions! Medical excuse does not include dental appointment for regular check-up, does
not include physical check-up, or other non-illness visits. Plan ahead for the check-ups.
Cautions! You may lose some points if the exam is messy and hard to follow.
Midterm exams and Final: There will be 4 tests in total - 3 midterm exams and a final. The
lowest score of the four can be dropped. The three highest scores will be used to calculate the
grade. Yes, you can skip final if you are satisfied with the first 3 midterm exam. If you have a
valid medical reason with doctor’s proof, you will be allowed to take a different exam as a
replacement. Other than medical reasons, no make up for exams. But you can use one as your
drop off.
Exams will be close book, close notes. Equation sheets and property tables will be provided.
You are allowed to use calculator during the exams. But no cell phones are allowed. Computer
should only be used for exam proctoring and for viewing the equation sheet for students who
are allowed to take the exam remotely (see the Schedule of Exam section above). The details
should be discussed and agreed upon with Dr. Huang in advance.
Final is planned to be 150-minute long (April 26th, 8:00 am – 10:30 am, according to UA
calendar). Extra location will be provided if needed.

Grading Policy
Grade = 15% * homework
+ 5% * Quiz
+ 10% * Attendance

+ 23.33% * 3 highest scores of the 4 tests (3 midterm exams and 1 final)


The minimum cutoff points for assigning grades are: 97 A+, 94 A, 90 A-, 87 B+, 84 B, 80, B-, 77
C+, 74 C, 70 C-, below 70 F.
Cautions! No D+/D/D- are offered.

If you make 96.99, you are A. If you make 89.99, you are B+. No round up unless the SOI
response at the end of semester reach 80% response, in which case any decimal point will be
rounded-up to the next integer for the entire class.
I reserve the right to “bump up” grades slightly based on attendance, effort, and improvement
over the course of the semester. But this is merit based only.
NOTE: If you request one extra point or two at the end of semester, your request will be denied
if you don’t turn in 80% of homework and attend 80% of class.

Severe Weather Guidelines


The guiding principle at The University of Alabama is to promote the personal safety of our
students, faculty and staff during severe weather events. It is impossible to develop policies
which anticipate every weather-related emergency. These guidelines are intended to provide
additional assistance for responding to severe weather on campus.
UA is a residential campus with many students living on or near campus. In general classes will
remain in session until the National Weather Service issues safety warnings for the city of
Tuscaloosa. Clearly, some students and faculty commute from adjacent counties. These
counties may experience weather related problems not encountered in Tuscaloosa. Individuals
should follow the advice of the National Weather Service for that area taking the necessary
precautions to ensure personal safety. Whenever the National Weather Service and the
Emergency Management Agency issue a warning, people in the path of the storm (tornado or
severe thunderstorm) should take immediate life saving actions.
When West Alabama is under a severe weather advisory, conditions can change rapidly. It is
imperative to get to where you can receive information from the National Weather Service and
to follow the instructions provided. Personal safety should dictate the actions that faculty, staff
and students take.

on campus in the following ways:

• Weather advisory sent out through UA Alerts to faculty, staff and students
• Weather advisory broadcast over WVUA at 90.7 FM

In the case of a tornado warning (tornado has been sighted or detected by radar; sirens
activated), all university activities are automatically suspended, including all classes and
laboratories. If you are in a building, please move immediately to the lowest level and toward
the center of the building away from windows (interior classrooms, offices, or corridors) and
remain there until the tornado warning has expired. Classes in session when the tornado
warning is issued can resume immediately after the warning has expired at the discretion of the
instructor. Classes that have not yet begun will resume 30 minutes after the tornado warning
has expired provided at least half of the class period remains.

Policy on Academic Misconduct


All students in attendance at The University of Alabama are expected to be honorable and to
observe standards of conduct appropriate to a community of scholars. The University of
Alabama expects from its students a higher standard of conduct than the minimum required to
avoid discipline. At the beginning of each semester and on examinations and projects, the
professor, department, or division may require that each student sign the following Academic
Honor Pledge: “I promise or affirm that I will not at any time be involved with cheating,
plagiarism, fabrication, or misrepresentation while enrolled as a student at The University of
Alabama. I have read the Academic Honor Code, which explains disciplinary procedure resulting
from the aforementioned. I understand that violation of this code will result in penalties as
severe as indefinite suspension from the University.”
