Google Drive is a cloud-based storage system that allows users to share files online and collaborate with others. Users get 5GB of free storage, with the ability to purchase more space if needed. To use Google Drive, you sign in with your credentials and can then drag and drop files into your online drive, which will sync across devices. The desktop app allows you to access files directly from your computer and sync drag-and-dropped files between your drive and desktop in real-time. Various collaboration and organization features are provided through the web interface.

An Introduction to Google Drive


The newest “cloud-based” storage system, Google Drive provides users with the ability to share
files online with anyone-at any time. Simply drag and drop various file types into Google Drive,
and you will be able to share, collaborate with others on your documents, and more! All users
are provided with 5GB of storage for free, and additional space can be purchased if needed.

Signing In
To sign into Google Apps for Education,

1. Go to http://go.uis.edu/google
2. Select Continue, and log in with your NetID and password.

1. Your My Drive syncs with your desktop, so the folders that appear here are the same
that are from your desktop. Drag and drop files from your internet to your My Drive,
and they will be copied to your desktop.

Google Drive Desktop Application


The first time you log into Google Drive, you will be prompted to download the desktop
application.

1. Click Download Google Drive.

2. Click Accept and Install.

3. Click Save File, open the download, and click Run. Follow the simple instructions for
downloading Google Drive on your desktop.
4. After Google Drive has been successfully downloaded, you will be prompted to sign
into your Google account. You will then be asked to begin syncing your Google Docs
files with your Google Drive folder. Click Start Sync.

5. Your Google Drive folder will now appear on your computer as a destination to store
files. It will also have a shortcut on your desktop, allowing for quick and easy access.

sync automatically with your Google Drive on the web and across your devices.

My Drive

1. Click the arrow to the left of My Drive to expand the contents of your drive. The folders
you see will be the same folders that appear on your desktop version of your Google
Drive. Click the folder to show the contents to the right, in the center of the screen.

2. Whenever you add a folder or documents to your Drive from your desktop, they will
instantly appear in your Drive on the web!

3. You can add a folder under your My Drive to further organize your files. Click Create
and then choose Folder.

4. Enter a name for your folder, and then it will appear under My Drive. You can simply
upload files into the folder or drag and drop existing files into it.

Working with your documents

1. When you click the checkbox to the left of the document you wish to work with,
additional options will appear along the top of your screen. Click the person icon to
share the document, the folder icon to re-organize the document and move it elsewhere,
the garbage can icon to delete the document, the eye icon to preview the document, and
the More tab for more options including renaming or downloading the document. To
open the document, simply click on the title link.

2. When you choose to share your document, you can enter the email addresses of the
individuals you wish to share with, and choose their settings (if you are giving them
permission to edit, only view, etc). Click Share and Save to distribute the document.

o One of the highlights of Google Drive is the live collaboration feature. When you
share a document with an individual and give them permission to edit, you can
work on the same document at the same time and collaborate live, viewing each
other’s edits as they are made.

1. Google Docs is now integrated into Google Drive. You are able to upload and create
documents as you would in Google Docs.

New Featured Programs


Under the CREATE button, you will notice a new option; More. Here, you can use new
programs (Table and SlideRocket) and also explore new apps that you may want to add to use
as well.

Google Drive on the Go


Currently, Google Drive is available for PC, Mac, and Android products. There will soon be an
app available for iOS devices, making Google Drive compatible with your iPhone, iPad, and
other Apple products.
