Activity No. 4: Module in Life and Works of Rizal (GEC 109) History Department, MSU-GSC

Rizal was more valuable to the Filipino people alive than dead during the Philippine Revolution for three reasons: 1) As a living symbol of hope, Rizal's novels exposed the corruption of Spanish rule in the Philippines and his La Liga Filipina organization sought to unite the islands and encourage reforms against violence and injustice. 2) Through his writings and organizations, Rizal influenced the Katipunan revolution and articulated the national sentiment of resisting Spanish colonization. 3) Had he lived, Rizal could have continued making bold moves to lead the Philippines to freedom and independence, which is why his contributions would have been even greater if he was alive during the revolution.

History Department, MSU-GSC

ACTIVITY NO. 4
Name: Josh Nicole E. Pepito Date: 1/2/2022
Name of Instructor: Prof. Joshua Castillo
Class Section/Schedule: GEC109 - A12.2
Instruction: Within one page, answer the question below.

During the Philippine Revolution, was Rizal more valuable to the Filipino people
dead than alive? Why?

In the Philippine Revolution in which Filipinos have fought for independence and
struggled for more than 300 years in the hands of the colonial rule of the Spaniards.
Filipinos during that time tried to expose the weakness of the administration led by
Spain, but they failed to evict Spaniards from the country. Spain’s rule in the Philippines
was brought to a close in 1898 but precipitated the Philippine-American War and the
reason was because of the Spanish-American War. It was a war between the U.S.
Military and Filipino revolutionaries.

During those times, Filipinos were hopeless, they are in need of a symbol of
hope. That’s when Dr. José Rizal arose as the leading Propagandist. Using His novel
Noli me tángere, he exposed the Manila Spanish society’s corruption and the movement
for independence.

He also founded the La liga filipina which goals are: To unite the whole
archipelago into one compact, vigorous, and homogenous body; to have a mutual
protection in every want and necessity; Defense against all violence and injustice;
Encouragement of instruction, agriculture, and commerce; and to Study and and apply
all reforms.

Rizal and his translation in Sucesos de las islas filipina with the intention of
correcting the misconceptions that Filipinos during Pre-colonial era are barbaric and the
newspaper la solidaridad was meant to show the views and sentiments of the
propagandist into the Spanish public.

The Propaganda Movement in which influenced the Katipunan led by Andres

Bonifacio was articulating in the thought of sharing the national sentiments that was
abused under the colonization of the Spaniards during that time.

With the hope and the courageousness Dr. José Rizal have shown through his
works It is indeed true that Rizal was valuable to the Filipino people dead and alive. But,
knowing his contributions to the independence of the Filipinos, He was more valuable
alive during the Philippine Revolution as to he made bold moves to ascend the island to
freedom and have their own independence.
