The Ultimate Guide To High Scores in Describe Image Section of PTE

The Describe Image task in the Speaking module of the PTE Academic test requires test takers to describe images in their own words within a time limit. For each question, test takers have 25 seconds to view an image, followed by 40 seconds to describe it speaking into a microphone. The images can include graphs, charts, maps, diagrams, photographs, or combinations. Confidence, accuracy, and fluency are important for scoring well, as test takers must describe each image clearly and concisely within the time limit while other test takers speak simultaneously, creating distractions. Practice and preparation can help build skills for this task.

DESCRIBE IMAGE

Describe Image is one of the tasks in the Speaking module in PTE Academic test.
You will get 6-7 questions of Describe Image in the actual test.
There will be an image in every question, and as the name of the task suggests, you need to describe it in your
own words.
Also, this is a timed task.
As soon as the question comes on the screen, a reverse timer of 25 seconds will start. As soon as the 25
seconds end, you will hear a beep, and then you need to start describing the image in your own words for 40
seconds.
So basically, you get 25 seconds to see and understand the image, after which, you need to describe it in 40
seconds.
This is how the question looks like in the actual test.
Look at the graph below. In 25 seconds, please speak into the microphone and describe in detail what the graph is showing.
You will have 40 seconds to give your respones.

[First 25 Seconds]
Look at the graph below. In 25 seconds, please speak into the microphone and describe in detail what the graph is showing.
You will have 40 seconds to give your respones.

[40 Seconds of Recording]

So, per question you will get a time of 25+40 = 65 seconds.

The Describe Image task is very similar to Writing Task 1 of IELTS Academic test, which is Report/Graph
Writing. The only difference is that in IELTS, you need to write a description of the graph or picture in the
question in your own words, whereas in Describe Image, you need to speak in the headset for 40 seconds to
describe the image.
Since the name of this task is Describe IMAGE, you may get ANY type of image in the actual test.

There are 6 main type of images which you may get in the actual test.
1. Graphs/Charts - Bar/Line/Pie 2. Charts - Tables/Timetables
3. Maps/Layouts/Plans 4. Diagrams - Venn/Process Diagrams/Life Cycle Diagrams
5. Photographs/Real Images 6. Super Image - Combination of more than one image

In the actual test, there is lot of distraction during the Speaking module as all the test takers are speaking at
the same time. So, in reality, you won’t feel like you’ve got 25 seconds to prepare. Those 25 seconds will feel
like 10 seconds, and everything happens so fast!

www.ptetutorials.online 02
To get the best possible score in this task, THREE things are very important.
1) Confidence:
It may seem very obvious that confidence is needed to
ace any test, but a lot of confidence will be needed to
ace this task. The reason is that many times, we
become very conscious and hesitate while speaking.
If you will hesitate/stutter/stammer/repeat during
this task, it will be very difficult to get a high score. So,
don’t worry much about what you’re speaking. Don’t
over-think the image which you see on your screen.
The name of the task is DESCRIBE IMAGE, not
ANALYZE IMAGE. The most common mistake that
people do in this task is that they forget the name of
the task. It’s a very simple task in which you’re given an
image, and you need to describe it within 40 seconds.
So basically, you just have to convert the image into
words. But what many people do is that they start
analysing the image, and add their own assumptions
to the image. NEVER DO THAT!

2) Practice:
It is truly said that “Practice makes a man perfect”. To
master this task, you will need a good amount of
practice. To ace the task of Describe Image, always
remember the golden words: “HOW you speak is
always more important than WHAT you speak”. PTE is
expecting you to speak in a certain way. However good
your English may be, if you don’t speak in the way PTE
is expecting you to speak, you won’t get a good score
in Describe Image.

3) Understanding the scoring:

To ace any task, you need to understand the scoring in that task

www.ptetutorials.online 03
Score Guide (with sub skills explained)
The communicative skill tested in this task is your speaking.
The sub-skills which are tested are: Speaking for a purpose (to repeat, inform, explain); supporting an
opinion with details, examples and explanations; organizing an oral presentation in a logical way;
developing complex ideas within a spoken discourse; using words and phrases appropriate to the context;
using correct grammar; speaking at a natural rate; producing fluent speech; using correct intonation; using
correct pronunciation; using correct stress; speaking under timed conditions.
The score depends on 3 main parameters, which are:

a) Content

5 Describes all elements of the image and their relationships, possible development and conclusion or
implications.
Describes all the key elements of the image and their relations, referring to their implications or
4 conclusions.
3 Deals with most key elements of the image and refers to their implications or conclusions
Deals with only one key element in the image and refers to an implication or conclusion. Shows
2 basic understanding of several core elements of the image
Describes some basic elements of the image, but does not make clear their interrelations or
1 implications

0 Mentions some disjointed elements of the presentation

b)Pronunciation: The scoring for Pronunciation is as follows:

All vowels and consonants are produced in a manner that is easily understood by regular speakers
5 Native-like of the language. The speaker uses assimilation and deletions appropriate to continuous speech.
Stress is placed correctly in all words and sentence-level stress is fully appropriate

Vowels and consonants are pronounced clearly and unambiguously. A few minor consonant, vowel
4 Advanced or stress distortions do not affect intelligibility. All words are easily understandable. A few
consonants or consonant sequences may be distorted. Stress is placed correctly on all common
words, and sentence level stress is reasonable

Most vowels and consonants are pronounced correctly. Some consistent errors might make a few
3 Good words unclear. A few consonants in certain contexts may be regularly distorted, omitted or
mispronounced. Stress-dependent vowel reduction may occur on a few words

Some consonants and vowels are consistently mispronounced in a non-native like manner. At
2 Intermediate least 2/3 of speech is intelligible, but listeners might need to adjust to the accent. Some
consonants are regularly omitted, and consonant sequences may be simplified. Stress may be
placed incorrectly on some words or be unclear

Many consonants and vowels are mispronounced, resulting in a strong intrusive foreign accent.
1 Intrusive Listeners may have difficulty understanding about 1/3 of the words. Many consonants may be
distorted or omitted. Consonant sequences may be non-English. Stress is placed in a non-English
manner; unstressed words may be reduced or omitted and a few syllables added or missed

Pronunciation seems completely characteristic of another language. Many consonants and vowels
0 Non-English are mispronounced, misordered or omitted. Listeners may find more than 1/2 of the speech
unintelligible. Stressed and unstressed syllables are realized in a non-English manner. Several
words may have the wrong number of syllables

www.ptetutorials.online 04
In short, try to speak in as native a pronunciation as possible. Always focus on three main sounds:

Sound of words starting with the letter ‘p’

For all words starting with the letter ‘p’, the sound should be ‘ph’. For example, instead of pollution, it should
be heard as ‘phollution’.

Sound of words starting with the letter ‘t’

For all words starting with the letter ‘t’, the sound should be ‘th’. For example, instead of technology, it should
be heard as ‘thecnology’.

Sound of words starting with the letters ‘c/k’

For all words starting with the letters ‘c/k’, the sound should be ‘kh’. For example, instead of car, it should be
heard as ‘khar’.
Eg.: My khar (car) is pharked (parked) in the pharking (parking) area.

c)Oral Fluency: The scoring for Oral Fluency is as follows:

Speech shows smooth rhythm and phrasing. There are no hesitations, repetitions, false starts
5 Native-like or non-native phonological simplifications

Speech has an acceptable rhythm with appropriate phrasing and word emphasis. There is no
4 Advanced more than one hesitation, one repetition or a false start. There are no significant nonnative
phonological simplifications

Speech is at an acceptable speed but may be uneven. There may be more than one hesitation,
3 Good but most words are spoken in continuous phrases. There are few repetitions or false starts. There
are no long pauses and speech does not sound staccato

Speech may be uneven or staccato. Speech (if >= 6 words) has at least one smooth three-word
2 Intermediate run, and no more than two or three hesitations, repetitions or false starts. There may be one long
pause, but not two or more

Speech has irregular phrasing or sentence rhythm. Poor phrasing, staccato or syllabic timing,
1 Limited and/or multiple hesitations, repetitions, and/or false starts make spoken performance notably
uneven or discontinuous. Long utterances may have one or two long pauses and inappropriate
sentence-level word emphasis

Speech is slow and labored with little discernable phrase grouping, multiple hesitations, pauses,
0 Disfluent false starts, and/or major phonological simplifications. Most words are isolated, and there may
be more than one long pause

Oral Fluency is the most important parameter which decides the score in Describe Image. You need to be
really fluent. Fluency means three things:

µ You need to speak complete sentences.

µ You should speak without hesitations - there should be no ‘aa’/’uh’, there should be no ‘umm’. Basically,
there should be no stuttering or stammering.
µ You need to speak fast. You need to speak complete sentences without breathing in one go. There is no
better way to explain Oral Fluency. The PTE software simply hates incomplete sentences. So if you take
pauses (breathing pauses) at the wrong places (any place except a full stop), your Oral Fluency score is
going to suffer.

So, each question of Describe Image is scored out of 15 points each ( 5 for Content, 5 for Pronunciation, 5
for Oral Fluency)

Structure & Method
Because this task is so important, you need to follow a structure while describing images. A structure will
help you a lot in describing images.
Before going to the structure, let’s have a look at the instruction again.
Look at the graph below. In 25 seconds. please speak into the microphone and describe in detail what the graph is showing. You
will have 40 seconds to give your response.

Most people think looking at the instruction above that after looking at the image for 25 seconds, you need to
speak for 40 seconds. Almost every test taker tries to speak for the full length of 40 seconds in this task.
Why? Because the instruction says so, that’s why! And secondly, greed. Yes. It is common sense that the
more you speak, the more content you cover, and the more you score. But unfortunately, you also run the risk
of crossing the 40 seconds mark. Many times, it is difficult to stop at the exact 40 seconds mark, and you
may cross it. Well, it means that you are cut in-between while you’re speaking, andthat definitely is NOT a
good thing. So, to avoid that, the best duration which one should speak in this task is between 30-35
seconds. DON’T SPEAK BEYOND 35 SECONDS! And the minimum you must speak? 25 seconds.
Now let’s come to the structure.
Whenever we write or speak something, we should always start with the
introduction, and end with the conclusion. In between is the body/main content.

The ideal way to go about every Describe Image answer would be:

INTRODUCTION 5-7 Seconds

BODY 20-25 Seconds

CONCLUSION 5-7 Seconds

[30-35] Seconds

www.ptetutorials.online 06
The introduction to any image should begin as soon
as the 40 seconds timer starts. There are few
common mistakes which people do while beginning
introductions. Many times, people start each of
their response with the same style and words. For
example, people start their answers in the same
style like: “This image shows…..” “This image
shows…..” “This image shows…..” If you repeat the
same word and same structure again and again, it is
obviously not a good thing. You will have 6-7
questions of Describe Image in the actual test. So
you should make an effort to start describing each
image differently.

µ “This image shows…..”

µ “This image shows…..”
µ “This image shows…..”
If you repeat the same words and same structure again and again, it is obviously not a good thing for your
Vocabulary score. You will have 6-7 questions of Describe Image in the actual test. So you should make an
effort to start describing each image differently.
The different words which you can use are:

Shows Depicts Describes Illustrates Represents Identifies Portrays

Demonstrates Compares (if more than 1 image in a single question) Explains Tabulates

In short, try and begin each answer in a different way.

For example,
µ “This image shows.…”
µ “This graph explains….”
µ “This picture portrays…”
µ “This flowchart depicts…”
µ “The given process diagram demonstrates…”
I’m sure you’ve got my point now.
To make a good introduction is really easy.
It should be really brief and to the point, and should be of roughly 5 to 7 seconds. Generally, in any
graph/chart/diagram, there will always be a title at the top, and along with a map, there will generally be a
legend or a key on the side. Always use the title to make the introduction. If it’s a bar/line chart, also use the x-
axis and the y-axis information to make the introduction. But always remember: The name of the task is
describe image. So when you use the title, try NOT TO READ IT, BUT PARAPHRASE IT in your own words.

Example (Bar Chart): Look at the graph below. In 25 seconds, please speak into the microphone
and describe in detail what the graph is showing. You will have 40 seconds

Incorrect Introduction: The given bar chart shows us

the Spanish Speaking Countries by Population. The x-
axis represents the population in millions, and the y-
axis represents 8 countries.
Why incorrect? Because you just read the title, you did

Correct Introduction: The given bar chart shows us the
different countries in the world where Spanish is
spoken. The x-axis represents the population in
millions from 0 to 100 million, and the y-axis represents

Let’s talk about the conclusion first. You should try to end
each describe image answer with a conclusion. The truth
is that PTE is looking for a concluding key-word, or a
concluding connector to start your last sentence. The
logic for this is that as soon as you use the
concluding connector, the software is triggered - that
YES, the test taker has started with the conclusion
now. So always remember, that you need to use the
different concluding connectors to end your
description of the image.

µ The different ways you can conclude your image are:

“Overall, it can be said that….”
“Lastly, we can say that….”
“Finally, it can be said that…”
“To conclude, it is true that…”
“In conclusion, it is evident that…”
“Therefore, it can be concluded that…”
“Hence, it can be said that…”

So basically, what PTE is looking for is words like - “Overall”, “Lastly”, “Finally”, “To conclude”, “In
conclusion”, “Therefore”, “Hence”. PTE is looking for these words to start your last sentence of the
description, and you would be definitely adding to your CONTENT score by using these words.

www.ptetutorials.online 10
BODY:
As I have already mentioned before, the body should be of 20 to 25 seconds. This means that you need to
cover as much information about the image in that time. At times, describing ALL elements in an image is
not possible as the image can be very complex. Therefore, a method or a STRUCTURE could be very helpful
to describe the body well.
Let’s take the most popular graphs/charts first.
Bar Charts/Column Charts
Bar charts are typically compare & contrast images.
You need to compare the different entities in the
graph. ALL bar charts have 1 unique characteristic, and
that is: Maximaum and Minimum points.
1st Step: Always start the body of a bar chart by
comparing the Maximum and Minimum entities, with
their values. “The highest Spanish speaking
population is in Mexico, which is around 85 million
people, whereas the least Spanish speaking
population is in Chile, which is around 18 million.”

2 Step: Many times you’ll see that

nd

items/entities are very close to each other. As

you can see in this graph, the values of Peru,
Venezuela and United States are very close to
each other, and so are the values of Argentina
and Spain. So what do you do? Simple. You
group entities in the same range together.
“Moreover, the people in Peru, Venezuela and
United States who speak Spanish are in the
same range of 20 million, and Argentinians and
Colombians who speak Spanish are around 35
million.

” 3 Step: There will always be few entities like Spain,

rd

which fit neither here nor

there. We call such items anomalies or aberrations. So
describe such entities in
a line or two.

www.ptetutorials.online 11
“Lastly the natives of Spain who speak Spanish
are around 30 million.”
Thus, we have been able to divide the entire
graph in 3 of 4 sentences within 20-25 seconds,
where we are able cover almost ALL the
information.
Anomaly
Let’s put it step by step:
The highest Spanish speaking population is in
Mexico, which is around 85 million people,
whereas the least Spanish speaking population
is in Chile, which is around 18 million.

*Audio Sample Answer: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2AO2iOv_FYqY3Q0UFo5WUpUVjA

Moreover, the people in Peru, Venezuela and United States who speak Spanish are in the same range of 20
million, and Argentinians and Colombians who speak Spanish are around 35 million. Lastly the natives of
Spain who speak Spanish are around 30 million. Now read it. See that? You have easily covered
EVERYTHING in almost 20-25 seconds. Now let’s talk about the 2 popular charts, Line Charts.
nd

Line Charts:
Bar Charts are very easy because they are compare and contrast graphs, and ANY bar chart will ALWAYS
have a maximum and minimum entity. Similarly, a line chart is very easy to describe, because any line chart
will generally have a time-line on the x-axis.

Always remember, that while describing line charts, never compare them. A very simple method to describe
line charts would be to describe all the lines in the image one by one, because when you start
comparing/analysing, your mind gets confused, and then you may fumble why speaking. So why compare?
Keep it as simple as possible. Anyway, we have to describe the image, NOT analyse it!
The 2 thing which we can use in line charts is the colour of the lines. For example, in the above figure, the
nd

line representing men who smoke has been shown in blue colour, whereas the line representing women who
smoke has been shown in pink colour.
While describing line charts, always remember to speak about the starting point value and the ending point
value for any line. It’s very important to mention that.
Lastly, mastering line charts is a game of keywords. You should use the right keyword at the transition points
of each line, and there are many verbs, adverbs and adjectives which you can use.

If we add up all of the above, it will be something like:
The party with the maximum representation in the European parliament is EPP, which constitutes 38 percent
of the electorate and is shown in dark blue colour, whereas the party with the least representation is the EDD,
which constitutes just 2 percent of the electorate and is shown in light-yellow colour.

Maps/Layouts:
Maps/Layouts can be very daunting images at times
as a lot of information could be shown in a single
image. So, the best way to describe maps/layouts
would be to distribute them with the 3 step approach:
Colours: Any map will generally have a legend or a
key, which can be seen on the left bottom of the
above image. A legend shows which colour describes
what in the map. A good way to describe a map would
be to start with the colours one by one and describe
them all.

Direction/Location: The most important thing a map shows is directions/locations. So, always remember
the four basic directions - East/West/North/South. If nothing strikes you in the test, you can also go with
Right/Left/Top/Bottom.
Shapes & Sizes: Many times, in case of layouts of buildings, or areas in a map, you can compare the relative
sizes and shapes of the buildings or the areas in a map.

Life Cycle/Process Diagram:

Describing life cycle diagrams or process
diagrams is very easy. Start with the first stage
and describe all the stages in the process or in
the life cycle one by one. It’s as good as reading
out the diagram, step-by-step.

*Audio Sample Answer: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2AO2iOv_FYqT2cwWmQ4NEprSVU

Photographs:
Describing photographs can be tricky at times, but if
you follow a method, or a structure, they can be very
easy. You may get any random photo in the exam.
Sometimes, it may as the one above, or at times, it can
be a very simple one.
The idea is to divide the photo in to as many distinct
elements as possible, and describe their colour, shape,
location and relative size one by one.
Always remember one thing - you have to describe the
image, and NOT give assumptions. So in the image
below, you must not say something like “According to
me, the image above is from Sydney Harbour”, because
we don’t know where this picture is from!

www.ptetutorials.online 15
So let’s divide the image in to distinct parts. Sample Response:
This seems to be a photograph of a harbour or a dock.
In this photograph, we can see the water which is blue
and clear. In the water we see big ships and small
boats as well. The two big ships are red and blue in
colour, and the yacht is white in colour. In the
background we can see many tall buildings of different
colours. Many buildings also have a glass facade.
Moreover, many huge construction cranes are also
seen, of yellow and white colour, and just next to them,
we can also see a white tower. Finally, the sky is blue
and has few distant clouds, but more or less it seems
to be a beautiful sunny day.
