Reflection Paper #1: Why is Human Resource Management both a science and
art?
“Talent versus Knowledge”
Human resource (HR) management refers to the practices and policies you
need to carry out the personnel aspects of your management job, specifically
acquiring, training, appraising, rewarding, and providing a safe, and fair
environment for your company’s employees. It is the function of the management
that focuses on staffing. It goes the traditional personnel management role.
In the 1990s, globalization and competition required human resource
departments to become more concerned with costs, planning and the implications
of various HR strategies for both organization and employees. Despite the obvious
differences between large and small organizations, the same HR issues must be
dealt with in every firm. All supervisors engage in managing human resources, and
their effectiveness depends in part of their ability to understand the principles of
HR management. It is unrealistic, however, to expect these individuals to
understand all the details of human resource management. Therefore, the presence
of an HR leaders who understand important HR issues is essential.
According to the HR Booth (2019), human resource management both a
science and art. It involves the systematic gathering of data derived from surveys,
statistics, interviews and observations. Somehow it is an art because it concentrates
on making sound decision.
Why is it a science?
As what I have seen in television every time we watched a teleserye or
business channel, one managers gathered all data and facts that can help for their
company if they are going to establish or produce new products. They make sure
every single plan and thinking on how to catch the attention of the target buyers. It
requires decision making skills and conducting an experiment or observation to test
it. They cannot do it directly and make immediately to avoid problems. Sometimes,
it is their intention to do it so that they would know the conflicts in the future.
After analyzing the decision, they think for systematic method to find a possible
solution for the problem. Human behavior is unpredictable; people think, act or
react differently under identical circumstances. I’m amazed on how managers
come up for a best solution to solve the problems. At some point, management can
never become as pure science. However, the study of the scientific foundations of
management practice can improve one’s management skills.
To sum up, the first step they do is conceptualizing or having mental images
of anything formed by generalization from particulars. This is to deal with
situations. Second, “scientific method” which have value in predicting what will
happen in similar circumstances. Third, studying of work development in the past
that proved management, more realistic or scientific. Fourth, organizing
knowledge of concepts, theories, principles, and methods. Lastly, it would not
effective if it is not put into practice.
Why is it an art?
Many believe that HR is more of an art than a science. Based on what I have
observed, most successful business managers are those who shaped themselves by
previous experiences. The reason is they lead the organization with critical
thinking skills, experiences and talents. Solving the particular problem with
strategies and creativity. It is more on personal creative attribute and involves the
conception of a vision of an orderly whole created from chaotic parts and the
communication and achievement of their vision. Managing is the “art of arts”
because it organizes and uses human talents.
I’ve mentioned that managers used their learned experience to lead an
organization but this theory is not sufficient. For example, learning how to dance
does not make you a choreographers or dance enthusiasts; one must know all the
important things and be able to use them. Similarly, a person may have a degree
that says he knows what a manager does but it doesn’t know how to apply
management knowledge in real life situations, he would not regarded as manager.
Every one of us have hidden talents uniqueness for different aspects. Same to
managers that they should not depend on his theoretical knowledge, he/she must
have some qualities that make them unique.
Being innovative is very essential. I know some managers became
successful because of their creativeness. Thinking outside the box and creates
things extraordinary. In order to succeed in the world of work, all the learnings
must put into practice to make it effective. Therefore, science teaches us to know
while art teaches us to do. Science makes manager being observant, investigative
and lead into experimental work. Art and science of managing are not so much
conflicting as complementary. As a social studies student, I learned that managing
people and client relations is an important skill to acquire in business, and this is
just one aspect of HR that I can apply to any job. Future educators must have
connections to their students. Other useful skill I would learn include organization,
administration, multi-tasking, presentations, reporting and communication.
Reflection Paper #2: What is the importance of the Human Resource Manager in a
school organization and his/her contributions toward the development of the
organizations?
“Prominent Role of Human Resource Managers”
Lawrence Arthur “Larry” Bossidy, an American author and retired
businessman once said: “Nothing we do is more important than hiring and
developing people. At the end of the day, you bet on people not on strategies.”
According to him, knowing your employees is not enough, they need to know you.
Hiring the right people for the role is the most important job of a manager. After
all, you need to bet on great people if you want to accomplish great things because
before you become a leader, you must grow yourself first and if you become a
leader, you can impart to others.
This is why human resource managers in an organization is very important.
As a student, they help us to improve our performance in school and motivates us
to do what our want to achieve in life. Efficient teachers help us in better
development of ourselves. They exists to improve the skills and knowledge in an
organization. Human resource managers in education are principals, deputies, head
of the department, teachers, parents, guardians and so on. Their core
responsibilities are to manage, nurture, educate and prepare the prospective human
resources of the society. These prospective human resources are the students who
will lead the country, society and family. Their innovation will take the country in
its great height. Prosperity of the country is largely determined by the quality of
these resources. The people who are responsible to develop this prospective human
resources are the greatest persons of the country and society. Their jobs are really
unique and can be graded as very important managers of the country (Hoque et al,
2014).
In my own perspective, teachers are those who have a greatest contributions
for me. Right now, I’m studying and they are the one who guiding me to a good
path together with my parents. A nation depends on the activities of the teachers.
Identically, they are working to grow the basement of the students. No matter, if it
school, college or university, a qualified teacher is the builder of the student. Even
a teacher on the special skills or technical courses is keeping role responsibilities in
societies. For this reason, the leader of tomorrow is created by teacher. At the
same time, if teachers fails to discover eternal power of a student, the student fails
in his whole life. That means a teacher is the best mentor for a life of the student.
Thus, the winning of the students is the win of the teachers.
Employee (2004) sated that school principals as the key factors in education
playing a crucial role in the implementation of educational reform and
development. How principal leadership can be effectively responsive in the waves
of education reforms inevitably becomes an important concern in policy
formulation, public debate and global communities. The importance of the role of
principals in a school organization cannot be over looked. The main duty of the
principal is to enhance teaching and learning in the school.
Human resource managers in school organization should realize that
individual differences and similarities within the people in the organization will
affect the organization performance. If the individual differences are being used to
the fullest and complement each other, it will result in synergistic outcome. Thus,
synergistic managers gather strengths of others in problem solving and decision
making. Consequently, I’ve learned that human resource management function in
any educational organization is to attract, develop, retain, and motivate personnel
in order to achieve the school mission.
