Number and Letter Series

Series as the name itself suggests, consists of questions in which a series of


numbers or alphabets or a combination of both, which are generally called terms
are given. A certain pattern between the terms is followed within the series. The
logic behind the pattern is to be identified and the missing term in the series is to
be found out among the given alternatives.

Common concepts used to spot the particular relationship between the terms
in the series are given below:

Series Based on Numbers:

 There will be a constant difference between two consecutive terms in the


series.
 The difference between any two terms in the series will be in ascending or
descending order.
 Each term in the series will be a product of its preceding term. Each term
will also be multiplied by a common factor or factors in the ascending or
descending order.
 Each term in the series will be squares or cubes of natural numbers or
squares or cubes of natural numbers increased or reduced by a certain
number.
 The series will be a prime number series or the difference between two
consecutive terms will be prime numbers. The series may also be squares or
cubes of prime numbers.
 The series will be an intermingled series where two or more arithmetic
operations are performed to get each consecutive term in the series.

Series Based on Alphabets:

The pattern followed in letter series is similar to that of number series but
instead of numbers the series will consist of letters in the English alphabet. Each
alphabet is assigned values according to the position of letters in the English
alphabetical order as follows:
