MELC: Express Fractions To Decimal and Percent and Vice Versa (ABM - BM11FO-Ia-2)

This document contains a business math module from the Republic of the Philippines Department of Education for week 2. It includes instructions on expressing fractions, decimals, and percents and solving word problems involving them. Sample problems are provided to practice converting between fractional, decimal, and percent forms. Word problems involving calculating percentages of amounts are presented, along with the formulas for finding the rate, base, or part when given two of the three values. An assessment with additional practice problems concludes the module.

MELC: Express Fractions to decimal and percent and vice versa(ABM_BM11FO-Ia-2)

After going through the module, you are expected to:
1. Express decimals to fractions and percent forms and percent to fractions and decimal forms
2. Give real-life situation to illustrate fractions, decimals and percent. ABM_BM11FO-Ic-4
3. Solve problems involving fractions, decimals and percent. ABM_BM11FO-Id-5
What I Know
A. Express each of the following as percent:
1. 3/5 = _______ 2. 5/16= ________ 3. 17/40= ________4. 31/2= _______ 5. 1/3= _________

B. Convert each of the following as fractions as percent:

6. 7/25= _______ 7. 3/10= _______ 8. 32/5= ________ 9. 21/125= _____10. 45/125= _______
What’s new
Converting decimals to percent (Word problems).

Multiply Decimals and Percents in Word Problems

The word of in a word problem usually means multiplication. This idea is also true in word problems involving
decimals and percents. The method for solving these two types of problems is similar, as you’ll see below.
You can easily solve word problems involving percents by changing the percents into decimals.
For example, here are a few common percents and their decimal equivalents:
25% = 0.25 50% = 0.5 75% = 0.75 99% = 0.99
One common type of problem gives you a starting amount — and a bunch of other information — and then asks
you to figure out how much you end up with. Here’s an example:
Maria’s grandparents gave her Php 1250 for her birthday. She put 40% of the money in the bank, spent 35% of
what was left on a pair of shoes, and then spent the rest on a dress. How much did the dress cost?
Start at the beginning, forming a word equation to find out how much money Maria put in the bank:
Money in bank = 40% of Php 1250
To solve this word equation, change the percent to a decimal and the word of to a multiplication sign; then
multiply:
Money in bank = 0.4 (1250) = Php 500
Pay special attention to whether you’re calculating how much of something was used up or how much of
something is left over. If you need to work with the portion that remains, you may have to subtract the amount
used from the amount you started with. Because Maria started with Php 1250, she had Php 750 left to spend:
The problem then says that she spent 35% of this amount on a pair of shoes. Again, change the percent to a
decimal and the word of to a multiplication sign:
Shoes = 35% of Php 750 = 0.35 (750) = Php 262.50. She spent the rest of the money on a dress, so
Dress = Php 750 – 262.50 = Php487.50. Therefore, Maria spent Php487.50 on the dress.

FINDING THE RATE AND THE BASE

A percent word problem has three values:
the base (B) or whole, the rate (R) or
percent, and the part (P).

FINDING THE RATE

It can be stated as follows:
• What percent of 16 is 10?
• 10 is what percent of 16?

You are given the base and the part and are asked to find the rate or percent.
The formula is R = P / B. In this case, divide the part by the base and then change the answer to a percent. EXAMPLE:
What percent of 8 is 6?

SOLUTION:
Use the formula R = P /B . Divide 6/8 = 6 ÷ 8 = 0.75. Change the decimal to a percent: 0.75 = 75%.
FINDING THE BASE
It can be stated as follows:
• 16 is 20% of what number?
• 20% of what number is 16?
You are given the rate and the part, and you are asked to find the base. Use the formula B = P/R.

EXAMPLE: 52% of what number is 416?

SOLUTION:
Use the formula B = P/R. Change 52% to 0.52 and divide: 416 ÷ 0.52 = 800.

EXAMPLE: 45 is 30% of what number?

SOLUTION: Use the formula B = P/R. Change 30% to 0.30 and divide: 45 ÷ 0.30 = 150.

What’s more
Try these:
A. If sales on Christmas eve this year was Php 3600 and the sales last year was Php 2900, what is the
percent increase?

What have I learned

The word of in a word problem usually means multiplication
Let’s check what have you learned by solving this word problem.(show in writing on clean paper)
If you received a box of 50 books and 4 of them were damaged, what percentage of the
shipment was damaged?(To solve this, first we will need to fit it into the formula. What percent
of the shipment of 50 books is damaged? Plug it into our formula and we have (x%) * 50 = 4. To
solve for z, we just need to divide both sides by 50 to obtain .08. Convert the decimal to percent
by moving the decimal two places to the right: 8%.) 8% of the books in the box were damaged.

What I Can Do

Practice Problems : The pie chart or circle graph below shows the profit breakdown of the paper
products sold by ABC Paper Company in 2001. Use the graph to answer questions a - c.

a. In 2001, what was the ratio of profit of toilet paper to profit of

paper cups?

b. If the profit for napkins in 2001 was 35% lower

than its profit in 2000, how much profit was made from
napkins in 2000?
c. If the areas of sectors in the circle graphs are
drawn in proportion to the percentages shown,
what is the measure, in degrees, of the central
angle sector representing the percentage of
profit of tissues?

Assessment

Determine an equivalent percent value for each fraction.

1. The price of a regular calculator is 0.375 of the price of a scientific calculator. What percent of
the price of a scientific calculator   is the price of a regular calculator?
2. 0.45 of the students in a class are enrolled in Mathematics. What percent of the students are
enrolled in Mathematics?
3. 0.65 of the people present in the theatre are under 20 years. What percent of the people in the
theatre are under 20 years?
4. Alia answered 0.9333 of the questions in Math test correctly. What percent of the questions did
she answer correctly?
5. A company has both permanent and part‐time employees. If 0.36 of the employees are
part‐time, what percent of the   employees are part‐time?

Additional Activity
1. Fleming has a collection of silver and bronze medals which he won in a sports event in school.
If 0.55 of the medals are silver, what percent of the medals are silver?
2. 0.84 of the participants in the sports event are boys. What percent of the participants are boys?
3. The soccer team of School A lost 22 out of 40 games last year. What percent of the games did the team lose
last year?
4. 0.54 of the seats in a bus are empty. What percent of the seats in the bus are empty
