Story of an Outstanding Student

The Right Ways to Learn

‘I take my failure in the past as lessons and tried different

ways to improve my study skills,’ said Fred Wong, who was given
the ‘Outstanding Student Award’. Fred recalled the days when his
parents met his school principal, he said, ‘My mother’s eyes were
filled with tears when she came out of the principal’s room. I
deeply regretted it and since then I made up my mind to study
diligently.’

Fred performed very poorly in all subjects in primary school.

He asked teachers for advice and sought ways to learn better.
Later he came up with some ideas. He prepared for lessons by
reading textbooks and looking up meanings of new words in a
dictionary. He took notes during lessons and asked questions
immediately after class. He visited a range of websites which
provided free online exercises. In his spare time, he borrowed
books on various topics from the library to broaden his
knowledge. Fred said that he was weak in languages, but he never
gave up. ‘I read both Chinese and English newspapers every day,’
he spoke with confidence.

‘I cannot tell how I felt when I heard that I was going to receive
the ‘Outstanding Student Award’. I have to thank my parents and
teachers for their encouragement,’ Fred said in the ceremony. He
is going to enter university and study Education. He wishes to
become a teacher and helps guide students to find the right ways
