General Laboratory safety
1. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the laboratory
2. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand a direction or
part of a procedure, ASK YOUR LECTURER BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE ACTIVITY.
3. Perform only those experiments authorized by your lecturer. Carefully follow all
instructions, both written and oral. Unauthorized experiments are not allowed.
4. Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in the laboratory. Do not use laboratory
glassware as containers for food or beverages.
5. Be prepared for your work in the laboratory. Read all procedures thoroughly before
entering the laboratory. Never fool around in the laboratory. Horseplay, practical jokes, and
pranks are dangerous and prohibited.
6. Always work in a well-ventilated area.
7. Observe good housekeeping practices. Work areas should be kept clean and tidy at all
times.
8. Be alert and proceed with caution at all times in the laboratory. Notify the teacher
immediately of any unsafe conditions you observe.
9. Experiments must be personally monitored at all times. Do not wander around the room,
distract other students, startle other students or interfere with the laboratory experiments
of others.
Your personal laboratory safety depends mostly on YOU

Electrical safety
1. Obtain permission before operating any high voltage equipment.
2. Make sure all the connection are correct before on the supply.
3. Avoid using extension cords whenever possible. If you must use one, obtain a heavy- duty
one that is electrically grounded, with its own fuse, and install it safely. Extension cords
should not go under doors, across aisles, be hung from the ceiling, or plugged into other
extension cords.
4. Never, ever modify, attach or otherwise change any high voltage equipment.
5. Always make sure all capacitors are discharged (using a grounded cable with an insulating
handle) before touching high voltage leads or the "inside" of any equipment even after it has
been turned off. Capacitors can hold charge for many hours after the equipment has been
turned off.
6. When you are adjusting any high voltage equipment USE ONLY ONE HAND. Your other hand
is best placed in a pocket or behind your back. This procedure eliminates the possibility of an
accident where high voltage current flows up one arm, through your chest, and down the
other arm.

Emergency Response
1. It is your responsibility to read safety and fire alarm posters and follow the instructions during
an emergency
2. Know the location of the fire extinguisher, eye wash, and safety shower in your lab and know
how to use them.
3. Notify your instructor immediately after any injury, fire or explosion.

4. Know the building evacuation procedures.

1 LEARNING OUTCOMES (LO):

Understand the switching method for double busbar

2 OBJECTIVE

At the end of the experiment, student should be able to:

 Operating a switching with two bus bars and different voltages

 Understand the function of busbar.

3 THEORY

In double bus bar system two identical bus bars are used in such a way that any outgoing or
incoming feeder can be taken from any of the bus. Actually every feeder is connected to both
of the buses in parallel through individual isolator as shown in the figure.

Any feeder at any time can be transferred from one bus to other. There is one bus coupler breaker
which should be kept close during bus transfer operation. For transfer operation, one should first
close the bus coupler circuit breaker then close the isolator associated with the bus to where the
feeder would be transferred and then open the isolator associated with the bus from where feeder
is transferred. Lastly after this transfer operation we should open the bus coupler breaker.

4 EQUIPMENT / TOOLS

 1DL2108TAL Three-phase power supply

 2DL2108T02 Power circuit breaker
 1DL2108T02/4 Busbar with 2/4 disconnectors
 1DL1080TT Three-phase transformer
 2DL7901TT Overhead line model
 2DL2109T2A5 Moving-iron ammeter (2.5 A)
 2DL2109T1PV Moving-iron voltmeter (600V)

5 PROCEDURE
1. Assemble the circuit in accordance with the foregoing topographic diagram. Special care
must be taken to ensure that the individual phase are connected correctly in order to avoid
later short-circuits.
2. In order to fully utilize the possibilities of the double busbar system, the busbar should be
supplied from two different voltages: the voltages at the beginning of the overhead line
(busbar 1) and the voltage at the end of the line model ( busbar2)
3. Set primary side of the three-phase transformer in delta connection 380Vand set the
secondary side to star UN−15%.
4. Insert all plugs connecting the capacitance to the line model.
5. Connect the three phase balanced ohmic load to outgoing power circuit breaker and set the
load resistance value to R5 : the load must be supplied alternatively from busbar 1 or from
busbar 2 as desired .
6. Initialy switch on the main supply in order to supply the three-phase transformer and the
line model.
7. First of all a connection to be established between busbar 1 and the load.
8. Then carry out a bus transfer so that the supply of the load is perform from bus bar 2.

NOTE:

a. The incoming disconnectors are interlocked with the related power circuit breakers and the
faulty switching sequence is not allowed : in this case warning signal is produced
b. The outgoing disconnectors are interlocked with the related power circuit breakers and the
faulty switching sequence is not allowed : in this case warning signal is produced

6 RESULT
A.Connection to be established between busbar 1 and the load.

Switching sequence:

a. Initially activate the disconnectors Q1 and Q3

b. Then activate the power circuit breaker K1: the bus bar 1 is alive.
c. Now activate the power circuit breaker K3: the bus bar 1 feeds the load.
d. Finally activate in sequence the disconnector Q2 and the power circuit breaker
K2: the bus bar 2 is alive also.
Measure the busbar voltage :

U1=………. V U2 =……… V

Measure the circuit currents :

I1 = ………. A I2 = ……..A I = ……..A

B. Now carry out a bus transfer so that the supply of the load is perform from bus bar 2.

The switching sequence in order to transfer the load from the bus bar 1 to busbar 2 is:

a. Initially switch off the power circuit breaker K3.

b. The load is isolated: this phenomenon normally does not occur in practice with
regard to network operation.
c. Then switch off the disconnector Q3
d. Now switch on the disconnector Q4
e. Finally switch on again the power circuit breaker K3
Measure the voltage at both bus bars:

U1=………V U2=….....V

Measure the circuit currents:

I1=……….A I2=…….A I = ………A
