[Answer all of the following questions. Figures in the right-hand margin indicate full marks.]

1. a) What is a set? Use set builder notation to give a description of each of the following sets: 2
i) {0, 3, 6, 9, 12}
ii) {-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3}
iii) {i, j, k, l}
b) Suppose that A is the set of 2nd semester students in IIUC and B is the set of students in discrete 3
mathematics at IIUC. Express each of these sets in terms of A and B.
i) The set of 2nd semester students at IIUC who are not taking discrete mathematics
ii) The set of students at IIUC who either are in 2nd semester or are taking discrete mathematics
iii) The set of students at IIUC who either are not in 2nd semester or are not taking discrete
mathematics
d) Draw the Venn diagrams for each of these combinations of the sets W, X, Y, and Z. 2
i) (X - Y)  (X - Z)  (Y - Z)
ii) X – (Y  Z  W)

2. a) What is a proposition? Determine the truth value of each of these statements if the domain 2
consists of all integers.
i) x(x+1 > x)
ii) x(2x = 3x)
iii) x(x = -x)
iv) x(x2 > x)
b) Let T(x) = x is a tool, C(x) = x is in the correct place and E(x) = x is in excellent condition. Translate each of 2.5
these statements into logical expressions using predicates, quantifiers, and logical connectives.
i) Everything is in the correct place.
ii) Some tools are in the correct place and are is not in excellent condition.
iii) Everything is in the correct place and in excellent condition.
iv)Nothing is in the correct place and is in excellent condition.
v) All of your tools are not in the correct place, but it is in excellent condition.
c) Translate each of the following into English, where H(y) is the predicate that y runs, and R(x) is the predicate 2.5
that y is a Leopard.
i) ∀x(H(x) → R(x))
ii) ∀x(R(x) ∨ H(x))
iii) ∃x(H(x) ↔ R(x))
iv) ∃x(R(x) ∨ H(x))

3. a) What are the ordered pairs in the relation represented by the following directed graph? Also decide 2.5
whether this relation in reflexive, symmetric, antisymmetric or transitive.

c) Find f o g and g o f, where f(x) =x3+1 and g(x) =x+2, are function from R to R. 2
d) What do you mean by sequence? List the first 5 terms of each of the following sequences- 2.5
i) The sequence that begins with 2 and in which each successive term is 3 more that the
preceding term
ii) The sequence whose nth term is 3n - 2n.
iii) The sequence whose nth term is the largest integer k such that k! ≤n.
iv) The sequence where the nth term is the number of letters in the English word for the index n.
