Software Installation
Capturing live video increase the demand on computer hardware. The specification is dependant
upon the resolution and compression method but for VGA capture the recommended computer
specification is:
Pentium III/700Mhz or greater with 128Mb ram and 250Mb free hard disk space
DMA-66 or faster hard disk drive
Ensure that if any previous version of the 14-208 GUI has been installed on the PC that it is
uninstalled before installation of any other version. To do this go into control panel and run
add/remove programs.
Inset the CD containing the GUI onto the computer. The disk will normally autoplay unless autoplay
has been disabled on that PC. If it does not autoplay load windows explorer and explore the CD,
open the folder marked GUI and run the set-up program. The installation program will then run.
Follow the instruction on screen to install the GUI.

GUI Operation
When the GUI runs it displays a dialog box asking the user to select a comm port. The choices are
comm1 through comm 4. Select which port that the camera is plugged into. If the camera is not
connected to this port an error message will appear and most options on the GUI will be greyed
out. However the user will be able to change comm ports and reset the camera/GUI. If the camera is
connected to the selected comm port then the initialisation commands are then sent. These set the
camera up to default mode.

Long Line Drive: Allows for compensation to video signal due to deterioration over long cable
lengths.
Changing these values on the GUI has exactly the same effect as changing them using the remote
control. When the setting is changed a tick mark appears beside it on the menu. This setting will be
stored in the camera even if the camera is powered down or reset.
Automatic: Camera is in auto mode. Shutter speed and aperture size is set
automatically by the camera.
Aperture Priority: Camera is in aperture priority mode. Aperture is adjustable by user with
shutter speed being automatically set by camera.
Manual: Camera is in full manual mode. Shutter speed and aperture size are both
adjustable by user.
Program AE: Camera is in program automatic mode. It is similar to auto mode but
more options are user selectable (such as WB).
Shutter Speed Priority: Camera is in shutter priority mode. Shutter speed is adjustable by user,
aperture size is set automatically by camera.
When a setting is chosen a check mark appears beside it. The default setting is auto. If the mode is
changed certain settings such as WB may be changed. Certain modes restrict the features that are
available for the user to select, such as manual focus. For a full list of what settings are available in
each mode see the Canon G3 user manual. The GUI will grey out the features that are not available
in that mode.

Video Device: This options shows a list of compatible video devices installed on the computer.
Select the device which the 14-208’s video output is connected to.
Video Compressor: This option shows a list of encodings codec’s used for setting the format of
any video that is captured. The contents of the list depends on the codec’s installed on the PC.
Different codes give different resolution, compression, frame rates and file sizes. Choose the one
which most suitable. If you need more information on codec’s visit the appropriate web site. If there
is known to be an incompatibility between the GUI and a particular codec then a warning message
is displayed if it is selected.
Video Processor: This options allows any video processing options to be added. At present none
are supplied with the GUI.
Preview: This option allows the selection of 2 options, Preview enable and Disable while editing
properties. Selecting each option will change it from being on to off or vice versa. Preview enable
displays the video from the camera on the GUI. Selecting disable while editing properties will stop
the video when it’s display options are being changed.

Video Capture Size: This option allows the selection of the resolution that the video is shown at.
Selection of a resolution that the video card is not capable of displaying will result in the GUI
potentially becoming unstable. Common resolution are 320 * 240 (1/2 VGA) and 640 * 480 (VGA).
VGA resolution is recommend as it gives a larger and more detailed picture than ½ VGA. However it
requires more processing power and frame rate may be lower.
Video Capture Properties: This option allows the adjustment of the videos capture properties. The
options that are available depend on the driver installed for the video capture card. Typical
examples include frame rate and quality.
Preview Properties: This option is very similar to that of the video capture properties but it deals
with the display of the video. Typical options include frame rate, quality, source and format.
Video Compressor Properties: This option is only available when a video compressor has been
chosen and it has parameters that can be adjusted. Typical properties include compression levels.
Legacy Properties: This option allows several legacy options to be adjusted but in most cases this
option is not available.

Figure 1.5
Video: This command allows for the capture of live video. Video will be saved to the file that has
been allocated. An option box is displayed containing two options. The first is a time limit. If this
option is selected then a number should be entered. This is the time (in seconds) that video will be
recorded for. If this option is not selected video will be recorded until the stop command is sent. If
the frame rate option is selected then the number entered is the frame rate that the GUI will try to
capture at. This rate is not guaranteed due to computer performance. If this option is not selected it
will try to capture at the preview frame rate.
Manual Frame Sequence: This command allows individual frames to be added to a video file. A
box comes up with a button on it called capture frame. When pressed it adds the current frame to a
video file. A counter is shown to show the number of frames captured. It is recommended that the
preview resolution is set to 320 *240 to allow the live video to be displayed at an acceptable frame
rate. Click on stop capture when frame capture is complete.
Auto Frame Capture: This command will automatically capture a sequence of frames. One option
is presented. If the time limit is selected, a number should be entered which is the number of frames
per second that are captured. If this option is not selected the video will be captured at the preview
frame rate, typically 15 frames per second. To stop the frame capture the stop command must be
pressed.

At the bottom of the screen there is the word humidity with a dot beside it. If the dot is black then it
