EXERCISE
This class uses Windows Server 2012 R2 and CentOS 6.5 as the client OS. The storage has been tested on
real and virtual NetApp platforms. If you have questions about performing the tasks, see your instructor.
In this exercise, you use NetApp OnCommand System Manager to explore the lab environment that is used
for the exercises in this course. You provision storage to use for this exercise and the remaining exercises.
You add the necessary licenses. You create a new aggregate and FlexVol volumes. The tasks that you perform
include:
Configuring a network time server
Checking the licenses on each cluster
Creating new aggregates and FlexVol volumes
Creating new storage virtual machines (SVMs)
Setting up CIFS on each cluster
These tasks must be completed successfully to enable you to complete the remaining exercises in this course.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this exercise, you should be able to:
Configure a network time server
Identify and add licenses that are installed on a Data ONTAP 8.3 cluster
Create SVMs
Use NetApp OnCommand System Manager to create new aggregates and FlexVol volumes
Configure the CIFS protocol on an SVM
1. Use the credentials that your instructor supplied to log in to the Windows 2012 Server in your
exercise kit.
2. In the Windows taskbar, click the Internet Explorer icon to launch NetApp OnCommand System
Manager.
5. Using the credentials that your instructor supplied, fill in the User Name and Password fields.
Click OK.

9. If the cluster has the necessary licenses pre-installed, continue to step 10.
If the cluster does not have the licenses pre-installed, continue with this step.
On the Packages tab, click Add, and add licenses for the following:
CIFS
SnapRestore
FlexClone
11. In the left navigation pane, click cluster1>Configuration >Network, and on the Subnets tab,
click Create.
This step and the following steps create a network subnet for CIFS.
14. In the left navigation pane, click the diamond next to Storage>Aggregates to expand the pane.
This step and the following steps configure a new aggregate on the cluster.

19. In the Data LIF Configuration area, in the Subnet list, select cifs_subnet.

Organizational Unit: CN=Computers
Administrator Name: administrator
Administrator Password: <your_administrator_password>
Leave the optional CIFS storage fields blank.
23. In the Administrator Details area, give the vsadmin user the same password as the Windows
Administrator account.
25. If the operation is successful, a screen that is similar to the following appears.
27. In the left navigation pane, expand the Storage Virtual Machines group, and select
cluster1>svm1>Storage>Volumes.
This step and the following steps create a FlexVol volume.
1. In Internet Explorer, open a new tab, and in the Internet Explorer address bar, type the

This step opens a connection to cluster2.

MODULE 2: DATA PROTECTION WITH NETAPP SNAPSHOT COPIES
EXERCISE
In this exercise, you use OnCommand System Manager to implement a Snapshot copy solution. The tasks that
you perform include:
Creating a new job schedule
Creating a new Snapshot policy
Assigning the new Snapshot policy to a storage virtual machine (SVM) and FlexVol volumes
Restoring a volume from a Snapshot copy
Restoring an individual file from a Snapshot copy
These tasks must be completed successfully to enable you to complete the remaining exercises in this course.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this exercise, you should be able to:
Use NetApp OnCommand System Manager to implement a Snapshot copy design
Describe the workflows that you use to implement a Snapshot copy solution
Use OnCommand System Manager to create a job schedule
Use OnCommand System Manager to create a Snapshot policy
Assign a Snapshot policy to an SVM and FlexVol volumes
Restore single-file data and entire-volume data from Snapshot copies
1. Log in to cluster1 using OnCommand System Manager with your user name and password.
2. In the left navigation pane, expand the Cluster group, and click the diamond next to
cluster1>Configuration to expand the panel.

TASK 2: CREATE A SNAPSHOT POLICY
STEP ACTION
1. In the left navigation pane, expand the Cluster group and click Configuration>Snapshot
Policies.
2. Click Create, and in the Name box, enter 10MinutePolicy and click Add.
3. In the Create Snapshot Policy dialog box, configure the following settings for the Snapshot
policy:
Schedule Name: 10MinuteSchedule
Maximum Snapshot Copies to be Retained: 10
SnapMirror Label: SVault

svm1>Storage>Volumes.

You have successfully assigned a Snapshot policy to a FlexVol volume.
5. After ten minutes has elapsed, click Snapshot Copies at the bottom of the screen to check the
current Snapshot copies on the volume.

TASK 4: RESTORE VOLUME DATA FROM SNAPSHOT COPIES
STEP ACTION
1. Log in to the Windows Server, and in the Windows taskbar, click the folder icon.
2. In the left pane, right-click Network, and select Map network drive.
3. In the Map Network Drive dialog box, type the UNC path to the c$ share on SVM1, and for the
path, use the data LIF that was created earlier in the Module One exercises, as follows.
Notice that the LIF that is named svm1_cifs_lif1 is assigned the IP address you will use in the
UNC path to the c$ folder. Alternately, you could use the CIFS server name that you created
earlier, as follows:
\\C1_SVM1\c$.
4. Click Finish.

STEP ACTION
6. In the open space in the folder, right-click, and click New>Text Document.
10. In OnCommand System Manager, expand the Storage Virtual Machines group for cluster1,
and click cluster1>svm1>Storage>Volumes.
11. Select the svm1_vol1 volume, click Snapshot Copies and, from the drop-down list, select
Create.
12. In the Create Snapshot Copy dialog box, name the Snapshot copy First_Snapshot, and click
Create.

21. In the Restore Volume confirmation dialog box, click the Restore volume from this Snapshot
copy checkbox, and click Restore.
2. In Windows, right-click Snapshot_Test_File and, from the drop-down list, select Restore
Previous Versions. In the Snapshot_Test_File Properties screen, choose the oldest version of
the file.

MODULE 3: NETAPP REPLICATION TECHNOLOGIES

In this exercise, you configure the peering relationship between the clusters. You then configure peering
relationships between storage virtual machines (SVMs).
Successful completion of this exercise is necessary to enable you to complete exercises in the next modules.

2. In the Peers pane, click Create and, in the Create Cluster Peer dialog box, configure the

Passphrase: Netapp123
Intercluster IP Addresses: 192.168.1.110 (use the Intercluster_LIF IP address on
cluster2)
This step and the following step initiate the cluster peer relationship on cluster1.
3. Click Create.
A confirmation pop-up appears.
4. Click OK to confirm.
The peer cluster is marked as “unavailable” with the authentication status of “pending.”

MODULE 4: USING SNAPMIRROR FOR DATA PROTECTION
EXERCISE
In this exercise, you create and implement SnapMirror policies. You follow a SnapMirror implementation
workflow to implement the solution. You use SnapMirror software to recover data and then resume normal
operations after a simulated source volume failure.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this exercise, you should be able to:
Use workflows to implement SnapMirror solutions
Use the OnCommand System Manager built-in wizard to implement a new SnapMirror relationship
Use the OnCommand System Manager wizard to create storage virtual machine (SVM) peering and
SnapMirror relationships, provision a destination FlexVol volume, and perform an initial transfer
Perform a SnapMirror failover to secondary storage
Resume normal SnapMirror operations after a failure
1. Use the credentials that your instructor supplied to log in to the Windows 2012 Server in your
exercise kit.
2. In the Windows taskbar, click the Internet Explorer icon, and in the address bar, type:
https://<IP_address_of_cluster1_management_LIF>
This step launches NetApp OnCommand System Manager.
4. Using the credentials that your instructor supplied, fill in the User Name and Password fields,
and click the Sign In button.
6. Click cluster1>svm1>Storage>Volumes.

4. Click the Authenticate link below the Storage Virtual Machine drop-down box.
The Authentication screen appears.
5. Fill in the Username and Password boxes with the admin credentials for cluster 2.

A confirmation pop-up appears.
7. Click Offline.
8. Make sure that the status of the svm1_vol2 volume indicates that it is offline.
In this example, the transfer status is “Idle.” If the status is not quiesced or idle, you must
quiesce the transfer. Complete step 3 only if necessary; otherwise, skip to step 6.
3. In the Protection area, click the SnapMirror relationship for source volume svm1_vol2, and click
Operations>Quiesce.

4. In the Quiesce dialog box, click the Yes, I want to quiesce the relationship checkbox, and
click Quiesce.
5. Click Refresh to check the transfer status, and continue clicking Refresh every few minutes
until you see the status change to “Quiesced.”
NOTE: You must wait until the transfer status changes to “Quiesced” before you proceed to the
next step.
7. In the Break dialog box, click the OK to break the selected relationship checkbox, and click
Break.

TASK 6: PERFORM A SNAPMIRROR REVERSE RESYNCHRONIZATION
After the problem with the former source volume is fixed, you bring the volume online and perform a
SnapMirror reverse resynchronization.
STEP ACTION
6. In the Reverse Resync dialog box, click the OK to reverse resync the relationship checkbox,
and click Reverse Resync.
As a result, the SnapMirror relationship is removed from the Protection list.

STEP ACTION
9. Click Edit, and assign the 5min mirror schedule to the relationship.
12. In Update dialog box, in the Configuration area, make sure that the “On demand” button is
selected, and click Update.

TASK 7: RESTORE THE ORIGINAL SNAPMIRROR RELATIONSHIP
Now that the original volume is repaired and online, you restore the original relationship between the two
volumes. You start by breaking the SnapMirror relationship again.

3. In the Break dialog box, click the OK to break the selected relationship checkbox, and click
Break.
5. Select the OK to reverse resync the relationship checkbox, and click Reverse Resync.

MODULE 5: SNAPVAULT BACKUP AND RECOVERY
EXERCISE
In this exercise, you create and implement a SnapVault solution. You follow a standard workflow to
configure SnapVault relationships and perform backups. You perform a SnapVault restore of data and check
the results.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this exercise, you should be able to:
Use NetApp OnCommand System Manager to implement SnapVault policies
Create job schedules to use for SnapVault transfers
Use OnCommand System Manager to create SnapVault relationships and perform an initial transfer
Describe the workflows that you use to implement SnapVault solutions
Restore data from SnapVault secondary storage to primary storage
1. Use the credentials that your instructor supplied to log in to the Windows 2012 Server in your
exercise kit.
2. In the Windows taskbar, click the Internet Explorer icon and, in the address bar, type:
https://<IP_address_of_cluster2_management_LIF>
This step launches NetApp OnCommand System Manager.
4. Using the credentials that your instructor supplied, fill in the User Name and Password fields,
and click the Sign In button.
5. In the left navigation pane, expand the Storage Virtual Machines group, select
cluster2>svm1_2>Storage>Volumes, and click Create.

TASK 3: CREATE A SNAPSHOT POLICY ON THE SOURCE SVM AND VOLUME
In this task, you create a Snapshot policy on the source SVM and source volume, and then you modify an
existing volume to use the new Snapshot policy.

3. In the Create Snapshot Policy dialog box, in the Name box, enter svm1_vol1_SVault and click
Add.
6. To modify an existing volume to use the new Snapshot Copy policy, follow these steps:

b. Right-click volume svm1_vol1, and select Snapshot Copies>Configure.

TASK 6: CONFIRM THE SNAPVAULT DATA TRANSFER
In this task, you create data on the source volume and confirm that it transfers automatically to the destination
volume.
STEP ACTION
1. If a drive letter is not already mapped, click the folder icon in the Windows taskbar, and in the
left pane, right-click Network and select Map network drive.
2. In the Map Network Drive dialog box, type the UNC path to the c$ share on SVM1, as follows.
