Vectors Additon Graphical and Component Method

This document describes a laboratory activity on vector addition using graphical and analytical methods. The activity involves solving for the resultant vectors of three given vectors A, B, and C using both the graphical (parallelogram or polygon method) and analytical (law of sines/cosines, component method) approaches. While graphical methods are easier and faster, analytical methods provide more precise results but require more mathematical knowledge. Overall, the analytical approach is concluded to be best for obtaining accurate vector addition solutions.

Laboratory Activity No. 3.

Vector Addition: Graphical and Analytical Methods

Introduction

Vectors are one of the most important things in physics, it does allow you

to see the real picture of what quantities really are. Vectors basically defines an

object’s magnitude with accordance to its direction. Basically, it is a scalar quantity

that has a direction, namely, velocity, acceleration, force, and many more. Vectors

are very significant in our real world since it is widely used by the engineers in

solving problems. There are two main ways in solving for vectors, and these are the

graphical and analytical method. These methods will be tested and used throughout

this activity.

Procedure

In this activity what I am going to do is to solve for the resultant vectors of

A, B, and C using the two different methods of solving the resultant of a vector,

namely, the graphical method and the analytical method. In the graphical method

you can use the parallelogram method or the polygon method, on the other hand, in

the analytical area you can solve using law of sines and cosines or the component
method. The professor gave us some data of vectors and will let us solve for it using

the 2 methods with its different ways of solving.

1.) GIVE

A⃗ = 10 km, 25 degrees North of East

B⃗= 8 km, 40 degrees South of East

C⃗ = 12 km, 50 degrees South of West

Results/Data
Analysis

1. In looking for the resultant vector in the first problem, I think the easier

way of solving it is by graphical method. Because you only need a tool

like a protractor and a ruler in order for you to solve it, unlike analytical

method you need to analyze thoroughly to solve for the resultant vector.

2. In problem 2 it’s still the same as problem 1, it is easier to solve by

graphical method since it does not require a huge amount of thinking.

3. First and for most the advantage of using graphical method is that you

don’t need to think deeply and use formulas in solving for the resultant

vector, instead you will only need a tool that measures the length and

the angle of it. The disadvantage of using graphical method though is

that it exposes you to some sources of errors like when you are solving

and the answers that you will find are not exact. On the other hand, in

using analytical method, the advantage is that it lowers the chance of

your answers to be in error, and it gives you the exact values of what

you are really looking for. It’s disadvantages though is that it requires a

huge amount of knowledge about mathematical concepts, theorems,

laws, and equations that makes it harder to solve.

Conclusions

During the activity I learned a lot about vectors and how important are

vectors in our everyday lives. I also learned how to solve vectors using two different

ways, the graphical, and the analytical. After I did the activity, I concluded that the

best way to solve for vectors is by analytical method because even though it

requires a lot of knowledge, it is still worth it and it satisfies your answers the most.
