How To Trim A Coral Tree

The document provides instructions for trimming a coral tree. It recommends removing dead wood and branch tips in early summer after flowering. Pruning should also thin out new green growth to prevent branches from splitting. Branches overhanging buildings should be trimmed to reduce risk of damage from fallen limbs. All prunings and fallen leaves/flowers should be raked up and disposed of as the seeds are poisonous if ingested.

Coral trees (Erythrina spp.) are also known as flame trees because of their distinctive
clusters of bright scarlet to red-orange flowers. Perfect for xeriscaping, coral trees
flourish in hot, dry areas throughout U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness
zones 8a to 10b, requiring only moderate amounts of water. In regions with cooler
temperatures, some species may die back from the cold and grow again when warm
weather returns. Choose a variety of coral tree that suits the space available in the
garden to reduce pruning duties. Coral tree varieties range in size from naturally short,
shrub-sized plants to mature trees that reach 60 feet tall. The unusual shapes assumed
by the gnarled branches are part of the trees’ appeal, especially during the brief
dormancy period when some varieties are leafless before bursting into bloom.

Remove dead wood and branch tips in the spring or early summer immediately after
the tree has flowered. Hand pruners are suitable for shrubby varieties. Use long-
handled loppers or a pruning saw for larger trees, and a ladder if necessary. Wear
gloves to protect your hands from the thorns on the trees.

Thin out new green growth in the spring after the tree blooms. New growth is full of
moisture, and it often becomes so heavy that it causes the soft wood branches to split
from the tree. Unthinned overgrowth can cause entire trees to be so top-heavy that
they uproot and topple over.

Trim branches that overhang buildings or living areas to reduce the risk of damage
from fallen limbs.

Rake up all prunings and dropped leaves and flowers. Even the leaves of some varieties
have hazardous thorns. The seeds are poisonous if ingested -- rake up the seed pods
and dispose of them.

Silver poplar trees (Populus alba) have distinctive white foliage and bark that form a
spreading crown with a rounded shape. These trees have invasive roots and can create
a significant amount of litter in your yard. You can expect these resilient and adaptable
trees to grow quickly under a broad variety of growing conditions in U.S. Department
of Agriculture hardiness zones 3 to 9.

Size and Appearance

The silver poplar grows quickly and typically reaches heights between 60 and 100 feet
with foliage that spreads out between 40 to 60 feet from the trunk. The tree's leaves
grow 2 to 4 inches long and resemble maple leaves in form. The leaves are bright green
with a silvery color on the back that continues up the succulent shoots that attach the
leaves to the stems. In the fall the leaves sometimes take on a bright yellow or gold
color. The flowers of the poplar are yellowish catakins that form on the tree in the
spring before the leaves unfurl. Poplar flowers are relatively small and take the form of
multiple drooping stems covered in fuzzy growth. The seeds of the tree begin to
mature when the leaves reach their full size.
